About this project
Stella and Bianca have not seen each other for seven years, and must work at finding a natural bond. Both originally from Australia, Stella (Natasha Bassett) is an angelic late teen and Bianca (Samantha Rebillet) a forcibly fabulous forty year old DJ. Stella stays with Bianca in her small Paris apartment, and we explore the gradual repair of a mother-daughter relationship. Strained at first, over the course of a few days their connection grows to become frivolous and fantastic. We sense all going well - until Stella meets a charismatic French boy (Raphael Desprez) and Bianca competes for his affections. Shot on the Red Epic by esteemed photographer Velinda Wardell. Original music by Ilan Kidron and French concert pianist Elodie Sablier, and jam packed with original dance tunes by Australia’s leading dance music producers. The Last Goodbye is a sexy, emotional beast of a feast.
We filmed in 2012 and added final touches in 2013. Many hours and a massive labour of love, generously supported by our close friends and family. We now have a feature length film, and need to finesse the score, complete the sound, finish the grade, mix and master, and reach the final online. Our goal is to see the film gain traction at key film festivals and then have it seen on TV, DVD and in your home. We need your support to make this happen. Come on board and be a part of our team!
Watch our behind-the-scenes video here, and get an idea of how we worked:
Samantha is an established film director and actress, having worked in film for nearly two decades. In 2010 she was operated on for a life threatening brain tumour. After a period of convalescence and then clarity, she decided to embark on something she felt truly passionate about. She enrolled as a doctorate candidate at the University of Technology, moved temporarily to Paris with her family, and shot the intimate film The Last Goodbye as a means to develop her directorial approach. It also forms part of her doctoral study.
The traditional pathway for funding films is invariably uncertain and can take an inordinate amount of time. The Crowd Funding platform also allows filmmakers to work on projects that do not always fit the conventional mould, and are more personal in their approach. But the best aspect is we get to communicate with our audience right from the start, and include them in the process of development.
Investing in a totally independent film means that you share in the joy and creation of what we are making, and are instrumental in helping bring it to the screen. By investing either your time and word-of-mouth support, or better still with your credit card, you are aiding us in completing the project and helping us get a step closer to delivering this film to its intended audience.
SAMANTHA REBILLET – writer/director/producer and role of Bianca. Samantha is a director and performer born in Paris and raised in Sydney. She has actor credits in several features and TV drama (among these Cosi, Going Down, All Saints, Murder Call), modelled in many a high end advertisement and forms part of the jazz pop band The Freaks in Love. In her twenties she moved into production, namely as director’s assistant to Alex Proyas (on Garage Days and iRobot), followed by a Masters in Directing Drama at AFTRS. She has since directed a host of award winning short films and documentaries, a TV series pilot, TV commercials and music videos. Samantha also works as a film lecturer at universities and film schools in Sydney, and is currently in her final year of a Doctorate Candidature at the University of Technology. The Last Goodbye forms part of this study. Some of her work and credits can be found on her webpage – http://www.samantharebillet.com
NATASHA BASSETT – role of Stella. Natasha has thrown herself into all things drama for the past eight years, acting and writing being her main focuses. She spent three years honing her craft working on productions at ATYP and NIDA, participating in both the performing and collective writing of shows. Recent screen credits include NBC’s Camp, where she played ‘Chloe’. She has appeared in PJ Hogan’s film Mental, and television roles include MTV’s TV Movie Dungoona, in which she played the lead, ABC’s Laid and I Rock, Nine’s Cops LAC, Seven’s Wild Boys, In Your Dreams and ABC’s Rake. Natasha has just announced being cast as a lead role in Fox’s new sitcom pilot Here’s Your Damn Family, in Los Angeles where she currently resides.
RAHPAEL DESPREZ - role of Olivier. Raphael is a French actor and model with multiple credits in film and theatre. He has had formal drama training both in Paris and London, and is fluent in French, Spanish and English. Raphael is currently living and working in London.
VELINDA WARDELL ACS - Velinda is an esteemed cinematographer, having working extensively in Sydney and won many international awards for her work. She met Samantha while studying at AFTRS, and together they made The Suitor and their graduating film Cosette (starring Mia Wasikowska). They have since gone on to explore more shorts as well as corporate and commercial work together. The Last Goodbye is their first feature collaboration. http://www.velindawardell.com
RICHARD BRENNAN - needs no introduction. A veteran of the industry, and also step father to Samantha. A wonderful guiding force, his many producer credits include Newsfront, Stir, Spotswood and Cosi.
DONNA BASSERABIE- Donna and Samantha forged a film partnership through several shorts while both studying for an MA at the AFTRS, in Producing and Directing respectively. Donna has since produced over twelve internationally and nationally award-winning short films.
CEINWEN BERRY - our consultant editor Ceinwen has been working steadily since graduating from AFTRS. She recently worked with Anne Fontaine on the Franco-Australian feature Adoration starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright. Ceinwen was working in Paris when Samantha got the idea for The Last Goodbye, and her input has been invaluable from the start.
ILAN KIDRON - music plays a massive role in The Last Goodbye and there is none more suited to the position of creating original music and sourcing the talents of many others. Ilan is the lead singer of the multi-platinum dance band The Potbelleez, wrote the score to the Oscar nominated short Inja, and has written hits for Ricky Martin and Jessica Mauboy. He has pulled together an amazing team of musical talent including ELODIE SABLIER, HAYDN WALKER, ARON OTTIGNON, JONNY MURPHY and the band he shares with Sami 'THE FREAKS IN LOVE'. Ilan is also Samantha's darling husband ♡
PETER MCCORQUODALE – our amazing sound designer Peter has deigned the sound for all of Samantha's films outside of AFTRS. They have been collaborating for over ten years. And this is their first feature together. He operates from out of his company McCrocodile Audio, in Glebe. http://www.mccrocodile.com
MARGARET TILLSON - Margaret started out as Continuity on Samantha's early shorts and is now our Line-Producer. Margaret is proving to be a lot more than what that title suggests - and just completed an MA Screen Arts & Business at AFTRS. Don't be surprised when she also gets a Producer credit.
GINGERBREAD MAN - our post production house. They have been supportive right from the start, and they totally rock! Their impressive list of credits includes the Sydney Film Festival Opening film of 2013 Mystery Road. http://www.thegingerbreadman.com.au

Risks and challenges
We have finished filming. We have a superb fine cut. We now need your help to finesse the grade, sound and music in time to submit to the major festivals.
Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. The way it works is that we have to meet our funding goal before the campaign expires – or we don’t get anything.
We can only finish 'The Last Goodbye' with your help - so no matter what the amount, anything you contribute will help ensure we reach our goal. Support us by donating and then spreading the word to others - share this link,“Like” us on Facebook, Tweet it, email this Kickstarter link to your friends, family, supporters, co-workers, fellow fans and anyone else. NOTE: We have asked for the bare minimum in the hope of meeting our target. Should we happen to raise more than the requested amount, additional funds will be put towards marketing and better screening opportunities. None of our team have been paid to work on 'The Last Goodbye'. Every penny raised goes towards the tangible costs of making a film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
