How WUJU Hot Sauce Started
I’ve always been passionate about food. My parents have worked tirelessly at their restaurants for over 25 years; seven days a week, only closing on Thanksgiving. The food and restaurant industry has been a part of my life since day one. On top of that, I just love sauces. If you know me, then you know that sometimes all I care about is the sauce!
I graduated from Drexel University last year, found a nice corporate job, and thought I was happy. But I still had a longing to do something else. It wasn't until a few months ago that I was introduced to homemade hot sauces by a friend’s dad. I was immediately inspired to create WUJU. I worked to find a very particular balance of heat and sweetness, perfected the formula, and had the sauce analyzed and shelf-ready. After I started showing the sauce to industry people in Philadelphia, restaurateurs, friends, family, and foodies, I knew that WUJU could be the next big hot sauce.
You can ask anyone. WUJU Hot Sauce is like no other hot sauce they've ever tried. With an array of spices added to a mixture of mango, habanero, mustard, agave nectar, and brown sugar, it’s a subtle and powerful mix unlike anything else out there.
What I will do with the funds
The main purpose for raising these funds is not only to get an amazing hot sauce to your doorstep and to adopt you into our WUJU family, but also to establish a strong foundation for WUJU to sustain itself as a business. Here are my plans if we get funded:
- Reserve booths at shows like the All Natural Food Expo or the Fancy Foods Show.
- Certifications for Kosher, Non-GMO, and gluten-free.
- Increase bottle sizes because people are using it like crazy.
- Order more bottles at a time to drive costs down.
- Adjust and add new heat levels based on your feedback to ensure everyone can enjoy WUJU.
- Speed up development of other exciting WUJU products: spicy mayonnaise, spicy ginger sauce, and spicy barbeque sauce. ·
- Get into grocery stores and restaurants, to get WUJU into your hands easier and cheaper!
WUJU Brand Story
I found it challenging to create a personality for WUJU. As I developed the sauce, I looked to other brands like Chobani and Honest Tea because of their simplicity and elegance. It took countless designs to get to this perfect one and I can't thank my talented sister, Serena, enough for all of her support and brilliant work in helping find the face of the WUJU business. My friends and family helped to guide me, particularly my inspiring friend Cody.
I decided on a sunset background for the bottle when I saw an amazing photo of my friend Cody looking out from a beach into a sunset. Cody, my cousin, and even my mother have battled with cancer, and through their tenacity and positive outlooks on life, they have helped me push forward and pursue my passion. They embody the core brand message of WUJU, which is to always -- from sunrise to sunset -- do you.
Tying back to a Social Good
I have recently established a relationship with Drexel University's Center for Hospitality to provide $500 for every $10,000 of our revenue. That money goes towards their efforts in hosting cooking classes and dinners for The Hope Lodge, a place where cancer patients can stay close to where they are getting treatment.
Also a BIG thank you to some of the key players in helping me get the word out there: Nick, Carly, Andy, and Cheese, thank you guys!
Testimonials from RANDOM Samplers
/u/superstorm_sandy - Hey man! We just got your sauce and it is AWESOME! Thanks for sending it all the way to Alaska :) we'll definitely be ordering it in the future, very unique and yummy!
/u/comaboy13 - Just got my bottle in the mail today after forgetting I had signed up. This sauce (medium) is damn good and is something that both myself and my family would love to buy. Planning on putting it on some Bubba burgers tonight Nd using it to dip our fries in. Spent a solid 10 minutes thinking about all the food this would work with so I am very excited to try it on fish and with various chicken dishes as well. Thank you for the free bottle and you won me as a customer with everything. The label, design, and the sauce itself are all perfect. I wish you the best of luck.
/u/snorkle256 - Thought this was pretty tasty as well. Would be great on wings! Lures you in with the sweetness then hits with a little bit and leaves you with the "smoky" spices, cumin and curry. Yumo! (Received the extra hot.)
/u/szheanyi - I got WUJU extra hot in the mail today and tried it with my dinner. I had chicken breast with mashed potatoes and corn. I feel like this sauce you could put on almost anything. Mango is my all time favorite fruit, the mustard twang with the kick of heat is a great flavor. I would recommend this to anybody. The only thing I have to say negatively about it is the label. But its a good start. Straight to the point. I wanna try the others now! Keep it up! You're doing great
/u/shepspc - My WUJU came today! I am a fan! I love it. Great flavor...sweet and spicy. And it's a full size bottle; I was expecting a sample size. THANK YOU! I will for sure be wanting to purchase more when I'm done with this bottle. Is there an ordering site? Cheers to Cody Schuler! edit: just saw that there will be a Kick Starter. Count me in!
/u/Donnie373 - Awesome Sauce! Your friend makes some fine hot sauce for sure. I have 7 different bottles in my fridge right now and this WUJU stuff will probably be the first to empty. I gave out samples to 4 friends and they all want their own... actually, they want mine but, that's never going to happen. I'm definitely interested in the kickstarter campaign!
/u/cutiekk17 - We just got our free sample today and my fiance LOVES IT! He is obsessed with it now and is afraid to run out of the small bottle we have!! I just went to the Wuju website to go order some but there's no way to do that. So i came to good old reddit to try and find some more info. We definitely want to be part of the kickstarter campaign!
/u/thesmokedjoint - Got my sauce today, thank you. Awesome flavor profile. Good luck with your company, you should do well.
From our Site:
KyleneS - I received the bottle of "just" hot, not extra hot, but it still has quite the kick! I've tried it on steak, pork chops, eggs, fried green tomatoes(it brings out a bit of sweetness) chicken(my favorite so far) and used it as a spread on a sub sandwich. I love the unique flavor that it has and wanted to say thank you for the chance to try it!
Jenny - I love spicy foods but have never been a huge fan of putting hot sauce on my food. I'm more of an "slice up a habanero on my nachos" kind of person. My husband on the other hand has hot sauce with almost every meal, so I thought I'd try and get in on the free sauce and surprise him with it. I received my free sample of the extra hot sauce on Saturday and we were both pretty geeked that the bottle was a real sized bottle, not a small sample. I tried it and immediately was reminded of a hot sauce that I do love very much from a little restaurant in Boston. Since we no longer live there, this is a pretty big deal for me.
Anyway, we're so in love with this sauce that we've been basing our meals around it. "Will that go with WUJU?" It's maybe a little pathetic of us, but let me tell you it's been an awesome week.
I went to grab the bottle this morning to WUJU my eggs and noticed that our bottle is already half gone. Somehow we're going to have to make this thing last until we can get our hands on some more.
Needless to say, this stuff is awesome. Thanks so much for the sample.
Elisha - Hi there! I received your sample of the extra spicy and brought it unopened to a weekend beach trip with 14 other friends. We demolished that bottle and everyone was a huge fan. I especially love the thai-inspired flavor. Can't wait for it to be commercially available!
C. Todd McCormick - THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE SAMPLE. IT'S GREAT AND I'M THINKING HOW TO USE IT BEST. CHICKEN I THINK. IN THE MEANTIME, SET UP A FACEBOOK PAGE SO I CAN LIKE IT AND ENDORSE YOUR PRODUCT. THANKS AGAIN, TODD
Jeremy C - I just got the extra spicy sauce and it's so good I'm going to start putting it on everything!
Risks and challenges
Once funded, one of the biggest challenges will be fulfilling and sending these bottles out on an individual level. I want to make sure that you get your bottles safe and sound. I will take extra time to ensure that.
Another challenge will be making sure that I gain visibility to the online market. I will continue to maintain presence with the leads I have, and seek partnership with big name grocery stores, restaurants, specialty shops, and distributors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
