On January 9th, 2013 saxophonist, pianist & composer Ross Taggart succumbed to cancer. Ross' passing hit the Vancouver, Canadian and North American jazz scenes very hard and his presence has been sorely missed by all. Ross was a larger than life figure, always making people laugh and continuously putting the needs of others ahead of his own. Ross had an instantly recognizable tenor saxophone sound that was big and robust a la Dexter Gordon and his touch on the piano was remarkable. He had the rare gift of making everyone around him play better and sound better and feel better.
Ross left a large legacy of compositions behind that have been played and recorded by many. In collaboration with award winning bandleader Jill Townsend, Cellar Live had the idea of getting Jill to arrange 10 of Ross' compositions for her big band of which Ross was a founding member, and recording them to make up the big band's second CD.
Arranger/Composer Jill Townsend leads The Jill Townsend Big Band featuring several Juno award winning musicians & outstanding soloists including Bill Coon, Brad Turner, Dennis Esson, Dave Robbins, Rod Murray and many more.
JTBB received critical acclaim for their first CD "Tales from the Sea" and were invited to perform in New York at the 2009 IAJE Conference as Canada's representative. The Jill Townsend Big Band was twice nominated for "Big Band of the Year" in the National Jazz Awards
Their premiere CD Tales from the Sea, received favourable attention in Canada, the US and Europe. The National Jazz Awards nominated JTBB both in 2008 and 2006 for “Big Band of the Year.” The band was invited to perform and premiere a new work by Socan Composer Award recipient Ian McDougall, at the prestigious IAJE Conference in New York in 2007.
A project of this magnitude cannot be accomplished without dedicating many many hours. Selecting compositions, arranging them, copying parts, rehearsing and recording a 17 piece big band is a massive undertaking and one that will take literally hundreds of hours to achieve. The budget will be broken down as follows:
MUSICIANS FEES for recording and rehearsing
ARRANGING FEES for 10 charts
MARKETING & PROMO
Risks and challenges
The single biggest challenge with this project is the time it takes to select, arrange and copy the parts for 10 big band charts. Work on these charts is scheduled to begin shortly after our successful campaign ends and we will update our backers continuously with the progress of the charts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
