THE NEW ALBUM
Since releasing my last record in 2010, I have been writing the songs and stories that have become this new album. I have been touring the east coast and developing the songs while playing at venues like Club Passim, The Lizard Lounge, and Toad. To find a permanent home for these songs I enlisted the help of producer and guitarist Austin Nevins, who has toured and recorded with many writers whose songs I deeply admire (Rose Cousins, Anais Mitchell, Josh Ritter). In December we went into Dimension Sound Studios in Jamaica Plain, MA and recorded the basics for eleven songs with my live band, Billy Beard, Jim Larkin, and Laurence Scudder. Then in April, I took a drive up the coast to Great North Sound Society in Maine where I spent four days with Austin, Matt Malikowski, Zachariah Hickman, and Sam Kassirer, tracking piano, organ, horns, clarinet and other magical musical devices. It truly has been a privilege to hear these songs come to life in the hands of some of my favorite musicians and dearest friends in Boston.
- Matt Malikowski, engineer
- Austin Nevins, producer, guitars, banjo, mandolin
- Billy Beard (Session Americana), drums, percussion
- Jim Larkin (Jesse Dee), electric bass
- Laurence Scudder, viola
- Laura Cortese, fiddle, background vocals
- Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter), piano, organ, vibes
- Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne), upright bass, pump organ, bass clarinet, horns
I am very excited about the new album! The care and heart that these players have put into the recording has been inspiring and I can't wait to share it with you.
Some of the costs included in making a record can be daunting - studio time, mixing, mastering, printing, and of course paying the wonderful musicians. I am trying to reach a goal of $8,000 here on Kickstarter to help with these costs, but the actual costs of making the record and getting into everyone's ears are closer to $12,000. If it doesn't reach the $8,000 mark by my deadline of June 1st, the project won't be funded, you won't be charged, but the rewards won't be able to be fulfilled! And sadly, the road to completing the new album will taper off into the distance.
As a supporter of the new album on Kickstarter you not only receive the rewards for which you pledge but you will be able to hear the album before anyone else. You will also be able to follow along as we put on the finishing touches, adding special background vocalists and guests, and get a glimpse into how a record is made. I am honored to have you as an investor in the new album! If you think of anyone else who might be interested in hearing the new music we are making, please pass this Kickstarter page along via email, Facebook posts, Twitter, and any other way you can think of. Thank you so much for joining the team and helping see through the completion of the record.
If you have any questions about the rewards or the making of the album feel free to email me at: email@example.com - I look forward to hearing from you!
Risks and challenges
Recording music is about making choices - tempo, style, instrumentation, etc. - and living with those choices has been the biggest challenge for me. Writing a new song is a wonderful feeling, it feels like creating a new friend. But recording a song can feel like putting that friend in prison. From the moment you start recording, the music starts down a path to become singularly what it is, and infinitely what it is not. The challenge for me has been to learn as much as I can without wanting to start all over, grow my hair out, and make a disco record. I have trusted the ears, dedication, and musicianship of my friend and producer Austin Nevins, along with the musicianship of Matt, Billy, Jim, Laurence, Laura, Sam, and Zachariah. Moving forward I will look to them, you, my fans, friends, and supporters to help me live with the process and path of the songs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
