“You want to be a writer, don’t know how or when? Find a quiet place, use a humble pen.” - Paul Simon
We aim to bring back the old times, all that jazz. The touch of holding onto solid wood. The seductive lull of gold brass. The feeling of, “the Pen is mightier than the sword.”
And we hope to mature & age with you. Take on the marks of Time, like you. And accompany you on the long shared path down memory lane.
Wow!! and who are we ?
We are Team ISHUJA. Kickstarter funded our start last year on Eco-Essential Pencil & Pen. We are super-grateful for your support, and seriously appreciative for all your approving comments. Thank you thank you thank you !
"Would also note that to date, of the 123 Kickstarter projects I have backed, the two Eco-Essential projects by now&then are easily in the top Five for how well they have been managed" - Larry Tyner
This time, we are putting our design passion & quality manufacturing to work, on a heirloom-worthy Pen. The basis is a wood-&-brass Pen body that houses SCHMIDT® refills, with optional Stylus Tip for the occasional straying from your Moleskine.
A Very Rewarding Pen
The Retro-Essential Pen is offered in 4 distinctive woods — Walnut, Beech, Oak, and Rosewood (New Edition - Pterocarpus indicus). Its structure is fortified & adorned by gold brass. We experimented with both unfinished brass and coated brass (protected from oxidization), and actually ended up loving both. The unfinished brass gets dull & discoloured over time, but it’s character-imparting, like something you’d find in your great-grandpa’s drawer. The coated brass looks oh-so-classique next to the rich walnut; to us, it conjures images of classic European bars that Hemingway would hang out in.
... in the Details
Magnetic Cap - conveniently keeps the cap on either end of the pen by strong magnet, you will never lose the lid when it is on the pen.
Optional Pen Clip - your choice, between simple elegance and simply functional. Feel free to change your mind.
Optional Stylus Tip - your best writing companion, whether it be on paper or on tablet.
Interchangeable Inks - crafted precisely for universal-type roller ball refills (Pilot G2, Schmidt, Schneider…).

New Edition - Pterocarpus indicus, Dark Shade
Pterocarpus indicus is a particular species that is indigenous to Southeast Asia, it's a precious tropical plant. It’s highly-prized in classical furniture making, and used in the best of marimbas. Rarely did it be used in pen, but we'd like to offer this unique design. It’s handsome, understated, presenting a contrast between dark shade & golden brass is a perfect match, like performing an elegant gesture with holding it on hand !
Over the past 5 months, we've completed all developmental work; from examining & considering different woods, design & re-design of our drawings / shapes / concepts, forming metal parts, and testing out the all features. Our efforts have converged into the prototypes you see here. We are in love.
Now, we are ready to spread this love, and we'd much appreciate your contribution in helping us reach the production MOQ (Min Order Qty) hurdle, and overcome the initial cost for tooling. With Kickstarter campaign, you can also help us gauge the demand, and find which wood is more popular. Thus we will learn how to plan and prepare materials in the future.
All of your valuable feedback is highly appreciated!
Prototypes and Samples
Our manufacturing partners are selected and ready. We aim to ship your rewards on June, 2014. But definitely, if everything is running smoothly, we'll try our best to put Retro Pen in your hand as earlier as possible.

Risks and challenges
We are a conservative bunch. We prefer to make promises after we are pretty certain that we can fulfill them satisfactorily.
We foresee some risks in lower yield-rate. Due to the natural nature of woods, some parts delivered may not be strong enough and may crack during assembly. Brass also requires more care in handling. But we have pre-emptively planned for a stringent QC process, and will make sure its diligently executed.
We have a proven track records of delivering on-time and to-backers-satisfaction. We always take our reputation very seriously. And we aim to please you again!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
