This Must Be the Place

This Must Be the Place is a burgeoning art space centering around community creativity and founded in the practices and spirit of the Diner Journal. Located above Marlow and Sons in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the space is a hub for our community within the restaurants as well as the neighborhood and city at large to come together and celebrate each other's talents, stories, paintings, collaborations and imaginations.

My name is Anna and I am Editor In Chief of the Diner Journal. Over the last four years the Journal has evolved from a venue for us at Diner, Romans and Marlow and Sons and Daughters to document our journeys understanding ethical and sustainable food ways to a platform to explore art, literature, poetry, braising, baking, fermenting and making. The Journal has become an investigation into our inspirations. We have recently begun expanding those inspirations upstairs at TMBTP

The Journal is a series of sparks. This now is a Place for classes, art, performance, performance art, dancing, eating, drinking, artist residencies and wild inspiration. We want to invite everyone to join us at the table. Uniquely, we endeavor to create and maintain a free space. This means all funds generated in the space, with the exception of art work sold, are donation only and go straight to the artist, instructor, poet, baker. All money from sold art work also goes directly to the artist but they are allowed and encouraged to price their work as they see fit. We look to fund one year, 12 art shows, many a dreamy night.

Our first exhibit was a group show that showcased work from our staff. It was simple, straightforward, exhilarating as well as diverse in its medium and scope. Man, it was fun. I was delighted to see the sheer magnitude of talent that I have to pleasure of working with each day. Since then we have had the honor of hosting a litany of brilliant makers: Marley Freeman's solo painting show, Reading Boyishly, the Nitty Gritty curated by Anni Rossi, Making Sense: A Night of Synesthesia presented by Megan Auster-Rosen as well as yoga and pilates classes, lectures by In Pursuit of Tea, performance art by Roses and Beans, and musical interludes by Ofir Ganon and more.

What the Money Does

Funds raised will recoup the restaurant for heat, electricity, wine and snacks donated, art materials, paint, lighting, etc. Funds raised here by the kickstarter community will keep TMBTP a free community space. As of right now myself and a few other volunteers are the staff. We try to run it with a really open policy and mind. The space is more about fostering creativity than curating, so it's been pretty fun so far! Basically I just get to say yes to people's ideas, which is a real pleasure.

Unisex Icelandic Wool Fisherman's Cardigan. Donated by Marlow Goods!! All of our wool goods are made from the raw fleeces of Icelandic and Dorset crossed sheep from Gansvoort Farm in Germantown, NY. We sorted the wool at shearing last Spring and then took it to a small, family run mill in Connecticut called Still River Mill. There the wool is washed, sorted, and spun into yarn. The yarn is shipped to us, and we take it to Flushing, Queens where it is hand-loomed into sweaters, and then felted for increased softness and warmth. Cyclops drawing by Andrew Tarlow, Odyssey coloring book by Anna Dunn, and unparalleled good karma included.

The Original - Cow Leather Bag - Green Each week we receive grass-fed cows, pigs, goats, lambs, chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits from allover New England, upstate New York and Pennsylvania. Everything is broken down and portioned out to the restaurants at our butcher shop. The only part of the animal that we were not using was the hide. So, after 10 years of dreaming together of a simple leather goods brand, we found a tannery in upstate New York who would custom tan the cow and pig hides of the animals that we serve in the restaurant. They are picked up from our slaughterhouse in Troy Pennsylvania and taken to Gloversville, NY. for tanning. Once the leather is tanned and colored it is taken to our bag maker in midtown, NYC. All linings are made of organic canvas, our zippers are riri, and our hardware is solid brass. • This cow leather is valued for its suppleness and ability to conform and mold to the wearer over time • Width: 19 inches / Height: 14 inches / Thickness: 4 inches • Canvas lining, pocket and zipper Reward includes two tickets to our triumphant dance party. This distinctive tote will also come stuffed with a hand drawn map of its very own creation myth/narrative and the, in comparison, decidedly ordinary Tarlow original Cyclops drawing and Dunn drawn Odyssey coloring book!
