Into the Dungeon is a 100+ page choose-your-own-path game-in-a-book, where all you need to play is a pencil.
The reader gets to decide which way to go and how to explore, with hundreds of different paths through the story. On some paths you'll find untold riches, ancient artefacts, strange creatures or secret passages, on others, you'll barely make it out alive (or die horribly.)
With your help, we'll be able to playtest, fund a print run, and pack the book full of fantastic illustrations from some of my favourite artists.
As well as my own art, the book will be illustrated by 3 other professional illustrators and designers who specialise in monsters, dungeons, mysterious discoveries and adventure - I’m absolutely hyped to have them on board!
The nerds involved
The book itself will be A5, 100+ pages, with black and white illustrations of monsters, dark passageways, traps, characters, loot and more, as well as instructions and note pages you can write in to keep track of playthroughs.
Stretch goals & overfunding
We've been absolutely blown away by support for the project, which has way exceeded what we were hoping for - thank you so, so much to everyone who’s pledged, we’re all very overwhelmed and extremely excited to make this book!!
Our main goal is to work on making book itself the best it can be, and focus on getting all the rewards out to everyone - now a bigger task than we first planned for! Extra backers mean fees, shipping and reward costs are higher and most of the money made above goal will just go towards fulfilling the project.
That said, there will be stretch goals centered on the book and artists! These are professional illustrators working below industry rates as it’s a collaboration we’re all excited about. Extra funding is making it possible to pay the other artists a higher rate, to bring it closer in line with industry standards.
The project will now also have extra illustrations, with more than 50+ in total, a binding upgrade to add french flaps to all books, a bonus poster and print for backers of all physical tiers, and artist originals as rewards, with the extra pledge money from the originals going straight to the artists - more info below!
Since all the limited tiers sold out, new extra tiers now include the chance to own the original ink illustrations that will be included in the book, as well as Faye’s originals from her inkblot forest choose-your-own-path book.
There are 4 playable characters with various skills which can unlock different paths through the dungeon.
Some characters will be strong enough to break down doors to find new paths, others are smart enough to instantly solve puzzles, or charismatic enough to befriend and charm the monsters if they choose. Certain items they find along the way can also change their fate, or unlock special endings for different characters.
You can also invent your own character, rolling a 6-sided dice to determine their abilities. Game kits include notebooks where you can draw or flesh out your character as much as you like, or keep notes on which rooms and passages lead to dangers or treasure.
Higher tiers also include a reward where one of the artists will roll and draw a random, unique character for you.
Some characters are more challenging to play than others! Trying different approaches and characters will reveal different stories and endings, and the more you play, the more you’ll find out which paths are best avoided…
Adventurer's kit and above tiers also include achievement cards for the completionist, which gives a sense of all the different ways to explore. These tiers also come with a game kit with a special Into the Dungeon notebook & pencil, and a wooden die to roll your own characters.
I loved choose-your-own-path books as a kid, but I often played older books which had illustrations I didn't connect with, no options to avoid combat, and lots of confusing stats - and I never made it out alive. Rooted in the same tradition, I wrote this book to balance a meaty & challenging story that’s also fun and accessible to everyone, with characters that are both easier and harder to play, and options for players that want to try charming, outwitting, or running away from monsters they encounter.
Shipping & FAQs
This project is planned with ECONOMY SHIPPING for international backers. Books are heavy and cost a lot to ship, so this is to help cut shipping costs for you, the backers! This means if the project funds, the rewards will likely be arriving some time in early 2019 for international backers, and will arrive sooner the closer you live to the UK.
If the project funds, we are aiming to ship the book as soon as it’s ready, and if possible, before the winter holidays for UK backers. However, this is just an estimate, and we can’t guarantee it will arrive before a particular date! If you want to buy the book as a gift for a birthday, christmas or any other holidays, here is a handy jpeg you can use.
Some parts of the book may be too scary and violent for younger players - we recommend Into The Dungeon for players aged 10 and up!
Is X character a guy or a girl or...?
None of the playable characters’ pronouns are specified - this is so the player can explore their own stories with the characters, imagining them however they want.
What's the money being used for?
Most of the money will be used to print books, rewards and to pay the other three artists. Here's a pie chart with a breakdown of our estimates:
Risks and challenges
Having run two kickstarters before that both shipped rewards early, regularly designing and publishing my own books, and sending out hundreds of orders internationally through Etsy, I have a good idea of what to expect and how to overcome any potential issues if they arise. All the artists are professional illustrators I know well who have already had a lot of input to the project. The text and gameplay of the book has already being written and is currently being play-tested. Backers will be updated if there are any changes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
