HORIZON Watch - Change one thing. Change everything.
A huge thank you to every one of our Backers - the journey begins.
The HORIZON doesn’t display the time second by second, or even minute by minute. Instead, it shows the main waypoints in each hour; quarter-past, half-past and quarter-to the hour. We already use the terminology to convey the time to others, such as “it’s just gone half-past” or “it’s almost midday.” OPTIK INSTRUMENTS translates this shorthand method to a wristwatch. A Swiss Made wristwatch.
We share it. We cherish it. We lose track of it. We waste it; fear it; curse it; there’s never enough of it. The definitive point of reference since the dawn of... time.
What is the time?
Where am I within the progress of the day? We get caught up in time; worry about the seconds whizzing by; the minutes we have left to wait; the hours we’ve lost. There’s no objectivity.
The HORIZON displays all 24 hours of your day in full. The light hours. The dark hours. Early morning and Evening.
The horizon between day and night.
Unlike other, more complicated dials, the HORIZON is incredibly simple to adapt to. A single line is all that's required to read the time forever more - no relearning of binary scales, or adapting to difficult positional quirks.
The HORIZON is quite striking to look at. It appears counter-intuitive. However, with one sentence, the HORIZON is immediately understood and what's more, intuitive, engaging and simple.
The central disc rotates once in 24 hours; the time is referenced at the red line.
That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. What is clever about the HORIZON design is that the more you use it, the more accustomed you get to the position of the disc during a day. Over time you will be able to tell the time at a glance, just by looking at the angle of the horizon.
The HORIZON can be read in any of 3 ways depending on how accurately you need the time; the first is broadly using the horizon position, something you will get accustomed to the more you use the HORIZON. The second is using the main way-points to more closely read the time - main hours and the half-hour dots. The last is using all the reference markings to gauge more precisely what the time is.
The more you think about it, the more you realise how everything around you is cyclical. From the big stuff like the Earth spinning, the circle of life, and seasons, down to the smaller things like your washing machine and wheels on your bike. Circles are strong, resilient. A circle is the most efficient way to do a lot of things. It also has significance spiritually, a sign of infinity and togetherness.
The HORIZON is immediately relatable - you understand how it works because it moves in a way you understand - the Earth rotates giving us our universal time reference. The HORIZON rotates giving you your own time reference. Simple. Intuitive.
The HORIZON was designed to be recognisable as an OPTIK INSTRUMENT immediately - nothing else like it. The disc design is the most prominent part of the HORIZON and it should be; function before form. However the supporting parts are all equally as important and we have spent over a year refining the design.
The 316L stainless steel case resembles an ocean rolled pebble; smooth, rounded and beautiful to touch. Some say having a pebble in your pocket helps with stress; the feel of the smooth surfaces easing tension. The HORIZON case blends seamlessly in to the domed sapphire crystal and is a treat on the eye and to the touch.
Speaking of sapphire crystal, we have a rather beautiful one here; the arc of the dome leading straight from the case, up over the disc and back in to the case. From acute angles the crystal exhibits some intriguing refractions. It's nice to know your HORIZON crystal is harder than most other materials on the planet, and will serve you well over time.
The crown is designed to be as integrated as possible, to refrain from spoiling the beautiful, seamless case and crystal. From the front, as the HORIZON is worn, the crown punches directly in to the case - it looks as one with the case. However from the back, the case recess opens up slightly more to reveal a notch in the crown which allows easy pop-out for time changing. The crown is smooth yet sized appropriately for perfect feel and engagement. That the movement is so accurate, and the longevity of the battery reaching 45-months; the crown serves its purpose perfectly.
The disc is something of an engineering feat. Watch movements are designed to power thin brass hands. The HORIZON uses a disc of a diameter much larger than most hands reach outwards, yet still manages to obtain accuracy of time, longevity of battery and robustness of construction. It is this proprietary disc design that is the heart and soul of the OPTIK INSTRUMENTS ethos; design innovation.
Made from a composite material, the disc within the HORIZON is precision made for balance. The internal bezel around the dial, with the red reference line and OPTIK INSTRUMENTS logo, protects the disc from impacts. Heat is not an issue, nor is weight. The disc is perfectly calibrated to operate within movement weight specifications, and during tests we found no detriment to the movement current or rate. In short, the disc design allows the HORIZON to achieve standard power reserve longevity of 45 months, during normal operation. Quite the achievement, and one we are extremely proud of.
Around the rotating disc is the internal bezel, which has on it the red reference line, the time-zone lines and our OPTIK INSTRUMENTS logo. The bezel serves as the frame to the disc allowing quick time reference, as well as a way to tell the time in various zones by using the markings either side of the main red reference line - these markings can be used for + or - 3 hours.
The bezel is also mirrored so that you can use either side for time reference, or use the opposite red line as your time reference point. It's entirely up to you.
The HORIZON is designed for daily use and is rated to 100m water resistance - for showering, swimming and snorkelling - so the requirements of modern life don't get in the way of your day-to-day routine.
The HORIZON is constructed with a unibody case and a push-fit caseback. The movement is suspended in the case with a unique engagement frame that allows the disc to rotate freely whilst the movement is held securely to the frame. This frame also helps with shock resistance.
The HORIZON comes as standard with a bespoke OPTIK INSTRUMENTS strap, which has been designed and tested for wear and tear, comfort and aesthetics over many months. The strap is important both for appearance and use to match the 100m water resistance rating. The strap slots into the case seamlessly thanks to curved springbars and custom strap moulds that allow us to fit the strap beautifully within the case. It is quite simply one of the most comfortable watches to wear.
For the 001_FLAGSHIP, 003_TECH and 004_NAVIGATOR there is a black silicon strap whilst the 002_BILLET sports a tan leather strap.
BILATERAL & AMBIDEXTROUS
We are all individual creatures, each with our own way of doing things. When designing the HORIZON we wanted to offer as much personalisation of each watch as we could, without changing the disc or case finish. By using symmetry and simplicity, the HORIZON can be worn on either wrist with the crown facing towards or away from the wrist. You can use either colour of the disc as day or night and, if you so prefer, use the time-zone lines as your time reference. You can even use the red reference line at the bottom or top of the disc. It's all completely up to you.
The HORIZON is available in 4 initial options, each with it's own unique feel, look and presence. The only difficulty is choosing.
The FLAGSHIP, with unmistakable presence and an almost instantly identifiable colour way. Featuring a distinctive yellow and grey rotating dial, nestled in a polished stainless steel case, this is the iconic look only possible with an OPTIK INSTRUMENT.
Appearing like it's hewn from one block of steel, the BILLET version features a dual grey dial to designate night & day. Crisp black lines and red flashes bring a touch of elegance. The brushed flange adds some visual sparkle from above. An unmistakable OPTIK INSTRUMENT, perfect for matching with the business suit or casual weekend wardrobe.
The TECHNIK has a slide-rule feel with the multiple zoned dial and vivid teal and orange flash. The colour scheme is inspired by off-shore rescue services, and is held within a sand-blasted stainless steel case.
The NAVIGATOR is inspired by vintage night-view aircraft gauges - imitating the glow of the dial markings in the darkness. The NAVIGATOR features a midnight blue, grey and yellow colour scheme, coupled with the black DLC coated case - it's a stunning visual treat.
All First Edition HORIZON models will feature sequential serial numbering from 0001. Where possible we will ship HORIZONs in chronological order of pledges - please note, the serial number will not necessarily match your Backer number.

The instantly recognisable design, personal service and support from the OPTIK Team is backed up by world class Swiss precision manufacturing partners, based out of Biel & Tavanne.
A lot is made of Swiss manufacturing in the watch industry, and for good reason. Whilst Swiss Made is a term typically used as shorthand for exceptional quality and precision, it means so much more; manufacturing consistency, quality control, sourcing, speed, communication, collaboration and precise scheduling.
There's an incredible amount of effort going in to the HORIZON and we want to make sure it's executed exactly how we want it, with the quality we expect, exactly on time. For that, we must look no further than Switzerland. We benefit. You benefit. It's nice like that.
Designing new things leads to asking new questions. The HORIZON is the first of its kind to use a single rotating disc as a method of telling the time. To make sure the disc design was a benefit, rather than a hindrance, the disc was designed and tested thoroughly for weight, balance and shock protection, with the movement tested for accuracy, deviation and longevity.
After extensive and thorough testing the HORIZON not only fell within manufacturer's specifications, but of the 5 modules tested, in multiple positions, all were accurate to within 6 seconds per month.
The HORIZON isn't about accuracy, but it's reassuring to know there is a reliable Swiss beat keeping things moving consistently along.
The full retail price for the HORIZON will be £399/$549. We will not be selling the HORIZON in retail until all Kickstarter rewards have been shipped.
Upon the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign we will be sending out a survey where you will indicate which colour option(s) you would like and we will ask you to confirm your shipping address as well as other relevant details.

OPTIK INSTRUMENTS is a new and innovative British design house driven by a slow-living culture; a lifestyle that emphasises slower approaches to aspects of everyday life. The OPTIK Team put function at the forefront of design and refrain from gimmicks - they have extensive experience in the production and manufacture of watches and use this knowledge to develop timing devices.
Designing the HORIZON has been a collaborative, frontier project to offer an objective angle on how we tell the time. Concept watches typically offer conceptual ways to present the time - the HORIZON is a watch with the simple aim of presenting the time as we convey it to others; simply, broadly and effectively.
OPTIK INSTRUMENTS offer a 5-year limited warranty on all watches which covers movement manufacturing defects.
The warranty does not cover damages that may occur from wear and tear and everyday use, nor does it cover the life of the battery within. For more information please see www.optikinstruments.com.
Stretch Goal #4 - UNLOCKED
Upgrading all silicon straps to a custom, bespoke design with profiled shape giving a perfect fit around the wrist, debossing and quick release spring-bars, making it easier for you to change the strap. This bespoke strap will be superior to the standard strap in terms of fit, quality and durability.
Stretch Goal #3 - UNLOCKED
The SOLIS is available to all Backers.
The HORIZON SOLIS stands in contrast to the other five models. A matte finished rose-gold plated case brings a warm aesthetic that, coupled with the chalk white and pebble grey palette, creates a uniquely summery aesthetic and one that wouldn’t look out of place with some bubbly in hand watching the 2:10 at Royal Ascot.
Stretch Goal #2 - UNLOCKED
BGW9 Superluminova added to the NAVIGATOR 24.
Stretch Goal #1 - UNLOCKED
The NAVIGATOR 24 - our first 24-hour dial - is available to all Backers.
Risks and challenges
The OPTIK INSTRUMENTS team has many years of watch manufacturing experience within it's ranks - individuals who are weathered and streamlined in higher volume production cycles and procurement scheduling.
In terms of risks, OPTIK INSTRUMENTS are working with a leading Swiss Manufacturing partner based in Biel & Tavannes to produce the HORIZON. We have put in place a production schedule and plan to bring the HORIZON to market with minimum risk. That said, there will always be unexpected events or discoveries that may impact this schedule. If anything untoward takes place, backers will be notified with a resolution already in place.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
