We started Kult KItchen because we love all things fermented. We know that these foods and beverages are not only beneficial for the human body, but for overall well-being. We want to share our passion and craft with the community.
Kult Kitchen looks to capture the spirit of each Ojai Valley season. We cultivate our products in small batches and short runs, meaning we only deal with produce grown in the very best manner and at their very peak.
We exclusively source from Rio Gozo - a local organic farm-- for our produce and herbs. We closely work with Johnny Fonteyn and Elizabeth Del Negro of Rio Gozo in cultivating our pickles literally from the ground up; from creating planting schedules to testing out new varietals of crops to picking our very own produce for all of our pickles. Vine to Brine - as we say - will often be less than a couple hours. And we don't stop there. Our sea salt is sourced from San Francisco, California and our spring water comes directly from a ranch in Ojai.
Our deepest intention is making products of unsurpassed quality that features the very best of the left coast. Picked and pickled in-season with love.
Who we is... Two left-handed, pickle-lovin' friends: Jon and Julia. We both grew up in Ojai, Ca. We both moved away to have the experiences, but our hearts were always were.
For the past five years we both lived in San Francisco, which, in many ways, is the food capitol of the west. Julia immersed herself in the restaurant industry, learning all aspects of the food industry by working with many of the top chefs and bartenders in the city.
Jon training was at the table, where - thanks to Julia and his foodie wife Kyra - they ate at every restaurant they could find. He used this training as inspiration for his own burgeoning craft of home-fermenting.
San Francisco taught us how thoughtfully crafted eats and drinks can create a higher quality of life. We believe in not only the benefits, but mainly the deliciousness of fermented things. We are inspired to share this message with all. We want to share our ideas and (mainly) our pickles with the community!
This project is to get us to Ojai farmer's market. We have the recipes and groundwork already done. We are looking to take the next step. These funds will go towards getting us set up to that: buckets, barrels, jars, spices and all the other nitty-gritty involved in getting us there.
Risks and challenges
Our challenge is to never compromise the integrity of what Kult Kitchen is producing. Since we are using only locally sourced organic produce and and herbs we risk loosing produce from a freeze or other natural issues. This could mean having smaller yields at certain times of the year.
Another challenge we will have to ramp up our production to have enough pickled veggies, Kraut, Kimchee to fill the rewards by January 2013. We will also be challenged to get enough products for the Farmers market.
