About

Loufoquerie is a collection of typographic illustrations comparing idiomatic expressions in French and Brazilian Portuguese. A publication designed by Cássia D'Elia and Tassiana Nuñez Costa.

Inspiration

We are two Brazilian designers living in Paris for some years now. We’ve both learned to express ourselves in French “on the go”. Especially the colloquial aspects of the language, the words and sayings that one does not learn at school but in everyday life.
As graphic and type designers, we decided to share this experience by creating a series of visual objects. We wanted to communicate the feeling of having two languages constantly operating in our heads. So we started collecting idiomatic expressions in French and in Portuguese, our mother tongue. By comparing those expressions, we found a way to compare our two cultures.

How we chose these expressions

As we started collecting expressions in both languages, their meanings and origins, we realized that it was an endless task. We had to figure out what criteria to use for a first selection.
The work of the French psychoanalyst Christine Revuz*, shed a light on our research: “Any attempt to learn another language comes to disturb, question, modify what is inscribed in us with the words of that first language.”
We chose to talk about madness and anger because, as Christine helped us figure out, learning a new language is not only challenging, but somehow crazy: it’s kind of giving up the logic of our mother tongue and giving room to another way of thinking and expressing ourselves.

The project

By putting the collected expressions side by side we figured out that this duality would work very well as spreads of a book. The result is a bilingual booklet (120mm x 194mm) that will be printed in risography, presenting typographic illustrations about madness and anger. Each expression is presented next to its correspondant in the other language. The illustrations have been made using the typeface Thelo, designed by Tassiana.
So far we have defined 7 pairs of expressions and illustrated half of them. If the campaign is funded the next step will be to complete the illustrations, finalize the publication and print the book.

How you can help

When talking about this to our friends and colleagues, we realized it was quite a popular subject that interested diverse audiences. So what better way of making this project come true than through crowdfunding?
Alongside the booklet, we came up with a series of graphic objects to reward our project backers. A series of posters printed in silkscreen:

Inspiration
