About

"One Kitchen At A Time" Jole Salitens epic words that pulled me out of retirement to teach Holistic management as it pertains to permaculture and deep-bed gardening.

This is an effort to calm the fear in the hearts of many in my community as it relates to:

Food availability: Transportation supply chains.

Personal responsibility: for health and nutrition

Emergency preparation: though wellness, farm to plate and self-reliance.

Humility: that comes with the raising, harvesting, and eating some of your own protein (chickens and rabbits), and garden vegetables.

Risks and challenges

Our effort is to improve a 1/2 acre 22,000 Sq.Ft. The land Keeping it strong will be our most important teaching opportunity.
My first concern is:
Me: my age and health, I am 67 years young, a former corporate marketing guy, I spent too much time working, eating out with clients and prospects just living a poor lifestyle. So I fixed that, lost over 100 lbs and started back towards my market farming roots. I am healthy strong and committed to the sustainability of this garden.

What happens if: This project is part of an existing grass feed and Finished Dairy and Meat farm with a retail store simulating J.Salitens operation in Virginia. The owners live on this site and work this farm and store daily. Their gift of the use of 1/2 acre, water, and some of the infrastructure like organic cow manure wood chip mulch is heroic and further demonstrates their commitment to the community in which they live.
It is my intent to build a 1000 sq.ft. demonstration garden to show how with chickens and rabbits and 1/3 of a typical backyard you can provide most of the protein and vegetable matter to sustain one's family, provide an appreciation for and awareness of food. ALSO 5000 sq. ft. of Market Garden to serve the patrons of the farm. The remaining 15000 sq.ft. of available space will be developed to provide an opportunity for a young couple / Garden managers, allowing me to mostly teach and advise the community and providing a workplace for a real-time experience.

CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Supporters cover a farm's yearly operating budget by purchasing a share of the season's harvest. CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members make a commitment to support the farm throughout the season and assume the costs, risks, and bounty of growing food along with the farmer or grower. Members help pay for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. In return, the farm provides, to the best of its ability, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it.

    Folks, This Ain’t Normal

From farmer Joel Salatin’s point of view, the book, life in the 21st century just ain’t normal. In FOLKS, THIS AIN’T NORMAL, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love. Salatin has many thoughts on what normal is and shares practical and philosophical ideas for changing our lives in small ways that have a big impact.

    The Urban Farmer

in this book, There are over 40 million acres of lawn in North America In their current form, these unproductive expanses of grass represent a significant financial and environmental cost. However, viewed through a different lens, they can also be seen as a tremendous source of opportunity. Access to land is a major barrier for many people who want to enter the agricultural sector, and urban and suburban yards have huge potential for would-be farmers wanting to become part of this growing movement.
The Urban Farmer is a comprehensive, hands-on, practical manual to help you learn the techniques and business strategies you need to make a good living growing high-yield, high-value crops right in your own backyard or someone else’s

    Making Small Farms Work

about this book, Allan Savory. President, Savory Institute & Chairman, Africa Center for Holistic Management. www: savory.global

This might be one of the broadest overviews of designing regenerative farm systems aside from Mollison’s original “black book.” Richard’s book is likely to become an important manual of regenerative farming practices for those starting a farm of any scale. This is a timely and detailed account of crucial considerations for starting and managing a farm; I cannot think of anyone, from the beginner to seasoned farmer and homesteader, who doesn’t have something to learn from Richard’s work starting and managing Ridgedale Permaculture.
