About this project
I'm thrilled for The Magic Gown to come to stage. It is a twenty one year, dedicated and creative dream filled with magic. Twenty one years ago, I found The Magic Gown in a river bed in the high desert mountains of Arizona. I made it into an art piece, but the magic did not stop there. In 1998 I began to paint large vibrant colorful doorway paintings. During that time I had a dream of a song with the words 'Ten Kings and Roses'. I continued to paint seven magical doorway paintings. Vivid landscapes of a blue tree forest, a red tree forest, a large pair of tropical eagles, a white sea bird with a golden fish in its beak, a pink and purple dragon, and a beautiful blue swan. Surrounded by these paintings I realized I had begun a story and the narrative began.
The story is about a girl named Lilly and her quest to bring back the magic gown to our world from an enchanted realm and about the mysterious neighbor boy, Tom Finch, who has a story of his own to tell. This is a story of encouragement, vivid color, amazing characters, transformation, humor and so much more. There’s danger encountered along the way like any great adventure but there’s also good waiting to happen when we follow the unfolding magic.
When the book was finished I envisioned how beautiful and captivating it would be adapted to the stage, with original music, set design, dance and song.
Then, you meet the right gifted people to collaborate with and bring this magical story to stage for a completely enchanting experience. Brooklyn based composer Mitchell McCarthy is now creating beautiful music for The Magic Gown. When I stood next to Mitchell in front of the Blue Tree Forest and the Red Tree Forest paintings, I had the most incredible awareness that he could hear the music and sounds of these enchanted forests. Later, I got to hear what the land I painted and wrote about sounded like. It was awesome. You can hear a sample of these musical sounds in the video above.
Soon after I was delighted to be introduced to playwright Bethany Hill. She read The Magic Gown and was immediately drawn to be the one to adapt the story to stage. On our first meeting, there was a tone about her of trueness, a gentleness with keen intelligence and appreciation for quality storytelling and I knew she would do an exquisite job.
As creative director of this theater project I am looking for funding to help move this production further along as we gather the collaborators and bring this enchanted and adventurous experience to stage for the Autumn of 2015 season in New York City.
To reach the $30,000 goal, or exceed the goal will help us. Your support is greatly appreciated. And I wish you wonderful and beautiful adventures. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge will be procuring the financial backing to bring this project to theater. Once met, I have confidence with the ongoing development and bringing the creative talent to present The Magic Gown in a New York City theater for a magical and delightful experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
