Three months after the Apocalypse, you're freezing your ass off in Manitoba. Ten Eaters followed you home, the same cabin you just burned down, accidentally on purpose, to kill off the ones at the front door. Now what?
The Chinese have a cure, or so claims a HAM radio hack named The Captain, but only if you arrive in Shanghai by April 5th, for The Clear Bright Festival. How do you get to Shanghai? The same way you got here: fight.
South is not an option. The nuclear power plant meltdowns took out the US. Instead, catch the last train North to Churchill, a deep water port on the Northwest Passage. From there, commandeer a tanker to Shanghai.
If you find the cure, go after what you really want - revenge. The scientist who started it all is hiding out in a research lab just south of Mongolia. No problem! Just fight your way through the most populous country on earth whose citizens, living and dead, have nothing to eat but you!
Dust Eaters is the exciting new book by horror author Ronan Cray. Rated "Top 10 New Horror Authors", it promises to be a killer story. They say about Cray: "You don't read a Cray novel, you live it." Time to find out.
Play one of three characters from Dust Eaters. (Why 'Dust Eaters'? 'Cause they're slow. Get it?)
For Tara, this is personal. After Eaters took the lives of her husband and daughter, she vowed to kill every Eater on earth, personally. While everyone else runs from the horde, she barrels toward it, guns blazing. Her weapon of choice? The Savage.
Cuba is a muscular hood rat from Miami. Cuba starts every morning with the phrase, “Today I die.” Like a Zen warrior, he lives and kills for today alone. His fight North from Miami through the ruined cities of the Eastern seaboard made him one of the most proficient killers on earth. He prefers Mr. Crow to guns.
Buck has a dream: get off the continent. Seems to resonate with those who follow him. His natural calm keeps him lucid in dangerous situations. Always quick to laugh and smile, he keeps spirits high. He's even mooned an Eater. His favorite weapon? Anything that makes them go down.
You'll fight through extreme environments like you've never seen. A burning train. A zombie safari. An arctic ship. A Chinese prison. If you make it that far. Because it'll take more than a happy trigger to survive.
How the money will be spent:
All of the funding will go toward game development, pure and simple.
Crazy Robot Games has the talent to do most of the development in house. As a small team, we excel at developing high quality games at low cost. Even so, there are a few items on our wish-list that will make all the difference. Here is where the project funding will go:
Create the 3d environment including all terrain, buildings, cars, props, and roads populated by all new 3d characters, NPCs, and animals. We want to create a world true to Ronan Cray's vision. We're playing with HD to create dazzling visuals with extraordinary levels of detail.
A very smart AI. It's important to us that all NPCs interact realistically and independently of the playable characters.
Motion capture and facial capture devices to make the characters extremely real. Intense situations provoke strong emotions, and you'll see it in the character's faces.
Talented Voice actors (because you don't want to hear us doing it)
Programming. We'll provide the player with a real choice between keyboard and gamepad controller for an intuitive control system.
Sound FX and Music (it's cheaper for us to hum it, but... no.)
The base of Maslow's pyramid for two lowly game developers as they create this masterpiece. We're not backed by a big game company, and we're not resting on our laurels. We work hard because we love the work, and it shows in the game.
About Ronan Cray
Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" was a formative experience for me. He described a world online where people played avatars and lived out their fantasies. Not long after I read the book, someone built that world online. The first time I logged on with my own avatar, I felt an incredible rush, like standing between two realities. His world was playable.
This is my chance to share that awe with you, to take you into a world of words, and then let you live it.
Dust Eaters stems from my fear of death and fascination with immortality. Here is a creature that lives forever yet hungers for something more. I think we're all like that, always hungry. Zombies are a great metaphor for our own struggles, and Dust Eaters brings that to the fore.
This game, like the book, is more than an action thriller. It will make you think and, hopefully, haunt you long after you play it.
About Jill and Jean-Luc (JL) Calouro, Founders of Crazy Robot Games
Jill and I were both in the US Air Force as Avionic Specialists. I repaired the F-16 and Jill repaired the RQ-1 and CV-22. Suffice to say, we know what adrenaline looks like.
I left the Air Force for Lockheed Martin as a Flight Test Control Engineer on the F-16 and the F-35. Jill went back to school, completing a degree in Web and Graphic Design. We teamed up over our love of gaming and dove into game design in our spare time. In 2009, Apple featured our first game, "The Infinity Project".
With that success, we decided it was time to go full time. Crazy Robot Games was born. "The Infinity Project 2" followed, as well as several other games we're proud of.
We're a team. Jill creates all the art and textures. I create the game levels. Jill is further honing her talent with another degree in Game Art and Design. As gamers, we are driven to produce fun, immersive games. We push ourselves to innovate on each new project, expanding the envelope, and ourselves.
IP2 gave us a taste for zombies, so when Ronan Cray approached us with his book, we jumped at the chance. Having a fully realized story with deep characters and real conflict gave us a great opportunity to go beyond run-and-shoot and immerse the player in extreme survival and human endurance. With Dust Eaters, we'll take the player on an amazing adventure through two continents full of incredible visuals, strong dialog and the feeling of "being there". It's an evolution of cross-platform story telling, a way to access a world through multiple experiences.
Ultimately, it's about the story. We're bringing you into it.
It's tag-team time! Having two creative teams means you get twice the rewards at each level!
Risks and challenges
Our $50,000 goal is enough to complete this project. We will not require or seek additional funding outside of kickstarter. Crazy Robot Games commits itself fully to every project. When successful, this Kickstarter project provides everything we need to work full time on this and only this game. Ronan Cray has already provided the full story line. We have the game controls and much of the play in place. Now we will spend our time giving flesh to the bones. A timeline of one year is realistic based on our previous work and, we hope, conservative. Many of the rewards will be available to ship immediately after Kickstarter concludes.
There will be challenges ahead, glitches and bugs, dead ends and creative differences, but we'll get through them the way we always have - through persistence and perseverance. Until now, we've all worked alone on spec, and we've pushed ourselves through conviction alone. The wonderful difference moving forward is that now we have all of you. Your faith in this project gives us more strength than ever. In the end, we're not doing this for ourselves, we're doing it for you. We could not be happier or more proud to do so.
