Rocking the Wall is a book on an epic Bruce Springsteen concert in East Berlin on July 19, 1988 that changed the world. The groundbreaking book is the untold story about how this concert helped unleash a revolutionary spirit in Communist East Germany that helped bring down the Berlin Wall just 16 months later.
This is not only a printed book but it is also a multi-media project that includes previously unpublished pictures—of Bruce, but also the concert, including pictures from an East Berlin police helicopter—and memorabilia and links to the concert. The book will be available in soft cover as well as in a small hardcover print run with color pictures, an enhanced ebook, and genuine items from the actual 1988 concert for fans.
Erik Kirschbaum, the author, who is based in Berlin, spoke with scores of fans who traveled hundreds of miles to the concert, with the concert organizers from the communist youth organization from East Berlin, with Springsteen's driver, his East Berlin translator, and also with Jon Landau, Springsteen's long-time manager and close friend. He sifted through hundreds of newspaper clippings and studied TV broadcasts of the concert and Springsteen's visit to East Berlin, and even rummaged through the Stasi files of the concert, the files of the secret police. For Springsteen's American fans, this book uncovers a huge, never-known political story about The Boss and his long-held desire to put on a concert for the people in East Berlin, the people behind the Wall who weren't able to see his concerts in the West.
Eva Schweitzer, the New York-based publisher, is the one who is putting the book together. This involves the actual design, the cover, acquiring pictures and picture rights, setting it up, getting PR, making the book visible in catalogs and book fairs, approaching bloggers and all the other work behind the scenes often not so visible. It is truly a joint trans-Atlantic New York—Berlin collaboration.
While the research and writing for this book is all but completed, there is still funding needed for all kinds of related costs: Picture rights, production costs, graphic design, travel, translations and editing, especially to get the book out in all these different formats and translated into German. We are also planning a presentation at the annual book fair in New York, not an insignificant expense. The book should be out for sale well before the 25th anniversary of the historic concert in East Berlin, which is July 19, 2013. And we, or, rather, Erik, also want to sell copies of the book at Bruce Springsteen concerts on his Wrecking Ball Tour this summer across Europe directly to fans. So, your help is needed to kick start this important project that will help shine a light on Springsteen's role in helping bring down the Berlin Wall. Help us tell the world about that story and as a token of our appreciation we'll send you a small piece of that Springsteen history?
Risks and challenges
The risks of getting the softcover produced are not that big, since most of the research is already done. However, to have an additional hardcover print run with color pages is costly, as well as the international distribution that needs to come with it, and recognition for the book in general. Since we at Berlinica have published nearly ten books already, we know that getting them out in front of the public is as much work as producing them. But with our years of experience we are certain we can tackle even the unforeseen problems on that score.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
