About this project
Our first episode premieres May 3rd. Watch it here!
The Innocents Abroad
The Innocents Abroad is a travel and food TV show where viewers get to know cultures through their culinary customs and specific dishes. Kate and Nora go into restaurants and kitchens around the world – starting in the diverse metropolis of New York City – and, in each episode, learn how to make a traditional dish, from shopping through eating. Through the course of their learning and misadventures, they and the viewers delve into the culture behind the food, discovering everything from the dish’s evolution to specific ingredients’ importance to how this culture connects over a meal.
This is not just your standard TV (or web) show, though. Once we have our final website up, you'll find The Innocents Abroad a destination for food and travel content of all kinds, from the recipes we feature, to destination guides, to food and travel articles by professional journalists.
Why You Should Help Fund Us
Our first episode looks pretty cool, right? We're so proud of it, and so grateful to our professional crew who did work – for which they normally get paid big bucks – for free, just because they believed in our project. Unfortunately, we can't keep paying them nothing, and without them, this show can't keep happening. With your help, we can hire our crew to film a couple more episodes this summer – and hopefully go film episodes abroad, in places like Mexico City (who's excited for molé?!) and Montreal (poutine, anyone?), so that this really is a travel show.
We've also got a number of other very cool things in the works this summer, from our website (which the super-talented RockPaperRobot is designing), to our shorter NYC restaurant profile videos, to an official launch party that will help us raise our profile when we go pitch the show to TV networks in the fall (they're more likely to pick up a show starring a non-celebrity if we already have a big following).
All of this costs money, unfortunately, and we're bootstrapping it as much as we can, but we need your help to keep the momentum going. We promise to reward you handsomely – check out the awesome rewards we're offering – and to keep you in the loop on our progress this summer. And we'll hopefully see you this fall at our launch!
Who We Are
Abbott & West Productions consists of Kate Thorman and Nora Chovanec.
Kate is a freelance writer who made her first real movie when she was 13. Everything she has done since – from crashing motorbikes in Bali to working "under the table" in Paris – has been in pursuit of the stories she'd tell with her own production company.
Nora is a photographer and works for the world-renowned artist Maya Lin (of the Vietnam War Memorial and, most recently, the What is Missing? Foundation). She bakes stollen like nobody's business and almost dropped out of high school to become a chef's apprentice.
These two twenty-something women both hail from the west coast, and are looking to bring a dose of levity, curiosity, and adventure to the world of media.
Abbott & West is a NYC-based production company that makes spirited, creative, and thoughtful media for our interconnected world.
