Scout, the last scientist, returns to her ancestral home of Earth to find it in a state of wilderness. A story about the value of science & skepticism, and their conflict with religion and narrative-based thinking. After the Gold Rush is a return to optimistic Science Fiction - the idea that the world can be better.
This Kickstarter aims to print the second chapter in the saga. Each issue is 22 pages long, with extra features such as web comic pages, a scientist of the issue section, write-in science corrections, etc.
We ran a Kickstarter last year to start After the Gold Rush, and thanks to all of our awesome backers we have enough to keep the story going for 4 issues! However, the plan was to keep them digital. Due to popular demand we are planning to print them now. And that is why we are back on Kickstarter.
It is good to have warnings, but it is better to have goals. Science Fiction is full of important stories warning us about the dangers of our hubris. That is a useful lesson, but it shouldn't be all we use the genre for. I grew up watching Star Trek, a show about exploration, progress, and ethics. While it didn't always nail the details, it cared about science and reason. After the Gold Rush is my small attempt to return some of those ideas to modern Science-Fiction.
This comic is also about the value of skepticism, and explaining what that means. Too often skeptics are synonymous with cynics. I want to show what skepticism is really about - caring about what's true.
If you want to know more, check out the episode of Skeptics Guide to the Universe I was on. I go over my aspirations for the book in more depth.

Some of the characters and technology you will find in After the Gold Rush. I have some more concept art to show from things to come in future issues - see the stretch goals for more details!
Of course we have the comic book itself, and some beautiful prints. But first, I wanted you to take a moment and check out this amazing work by Milsae Kim.
This print will be available as an 11" X 17", but it will also be part of a limited run of variant covers for After the Gold Rush #2. There will only be 100 printed. This is your best chance to get one. They will all be signed by Miles Greb.
If you didn't get a printed copy of #1 yet...
New Reward! 48 hours special, a one of a kind sketch cover.
This reward, the Luna Level, features this one of a kind cover, the variant cover, and a signed copy of ATGR #1.
The Reward Levels
A Look at the Art Pints
All the prints are 11" x 17" except for "Inspire Science", that is 8 1/2"x11". They are all printed on a high quality glossy card stock, and look great. If you back at a reward level with a large art print, you may choose whatever one you fancy. Here are your options.
By popular demand we have included After the Gold Rush T-shirts as reward options! Wear this to show your science-loving comic support around town, and wherever cool comic-people hangout. The T-shirts are print on demand, so sizes should not be an issue. I think they look pretty cool.
Custom Profile Art, by Isaac La Russa
Want to see yourself in a Cyro suit or a Titan Explorer uniform? There are reward tiers with both a full body commission like the one you see below. or, you can get a profile done that is perfect to use for facebook or twitter. The art will be delivered to you digitally.
Full body art commissions by Aimee Zhou
We also have the amazing storyboard artist Aimee Zhou on staff. The $125 dollar reward level includes a hand drawn commission of you in a Titan Explorer or Cyro suit! And the original art will be delivered to you! Pretty cool.
If things go really well I would love to be able to continue the ATGR webcomic. It precedes the events of ATGR, and follows Scout as a young girl growing up on Titan. You can check it out here for FREE.
As some of you know, we ran a Kickstarter last summer to get the whole story started. Thanks to everyone's support we have the funds needed to finish all the art for ATGR #2. We had planned to release it digitally only, not printed.
However, demand for a printed copy has been really high, so here is your chance to make it a reality. Most of the budget will go directly into Printing Costs and Shipping. Another small chunk will go into art fees for commissions done especially for this Kickstarter - the variant cover and some new art commissions. Lastly, fees from Kickstarter, taxes, stuff like that.
Risks and challenges
Aside from any tragedies among the creative team or when shipping the freight, I feel confident everything will work out.
This is my second comic book campaign, and the first one went well. I know how to budget shipping better this time, the core product (the digital version of the book) is already funded, and we have the right people to make this work.
