After the Gold Rush is a return to optimistic Science-Fiction. It follows Scout, the last scientist, as she returns to Earth to find it in a state of wilderness. She grew up on one of Saturn's moons, Titan, learning to become a biologist and a chemist. However, something went wrong and she has been in cyro sleep for some time. Eventually, she lands on her ancestral home of Earth and instead of the Star Trek like utopia she was expecting...she encounters a lush and natural Earth.
I would say more...but you simply must read for yourself.
It is good to have warnings, but it is better to have goals. Science-Fiction is full of important stories warning us about the dangers of our hubris. That is a useful lesson, but it shouldn't be all we use the genre for. I grew up watching Star Trek, a show about exploration, progress, and ethics. While it didn't always nail the details, it cared about science and reason. After the Gold Rush is my small attempt to return some of those ideas to modern Science-Fiction. This comic is also about the value of skepticism, and explaining what that means. Too often, skeptics are synonymous with cynics. I want to show what skepticism is really about - caring about what's true.
We hit 8k, so now EVEYRONE getting a physical reward will receive an extra HQ art print. The next stretch goal is 10K, and...
New Stretch GOAL - 10k
I ran a poll on my twitter, and asked backers what they would like to see for the next stretch goal. The most popular option was concept art pages. So, if we hit the mark of 10K I will be added extra printed pages to the book showing off the concept art that went into making ATGR #4.
Miles Greb - Creator & Writer - Former Bob Dylan impersonator who's obsession with Star Trek is annoying to everyone.
Elli Puukangas - Pencils & Inks - Freelance illustrator from Finland, living in the UK. Loves rats and all things Victorian.
Mikael H. - Colorist - A comic artist from Finland living in an ivory tower in the middle of a city, surrounded by figurines and stuff for drawing.
Andrew Pierce - Editor - Lovable goof. Escaped Kipling protagonist.
Jamie Me - Lettering - Letterer who spends his time wearing pajamas called a 'gi' while learning the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Barry Blankenship - Cover Artist & Logo Design - Amateur cursing cat ventriloquist.
Isaac La Russa - Lead Artist & Concept Artist - Based in Illinois, he wears motley flannels and owns two ungrateful cats.
Meescha D - Wannabe Artist - She tries hard at most things but ultimately ends up daydreaming 90% of her day about Sasquatch romance novels.
Ben Rodgers - Assistant Editor - Historian of historical biographies, at least he was historically.
You can follow the project closer at - @Goldrushcomic.
The reason we are all here, right? The books are each 22 page, with a fully illustrated profile of a famous scientist, a few pages of the web-comic prequel series, and the Peer Review science section. Printed in super high quality, using PrintNinja!
Stickers and Buttons!
The buttons and stickers have the same art. :)
There are many more art print options! All of the covers, or variant covers can be chosen as art prints. So if you see something you like, you can have it on your wall!
We have two limited print run variant covers.
The second is by local Seattle Artist Meescha Dare. She works in a beautiful traditional medium. It gives her piece a unique look!
Scientist of the issue - Katherine Johnson
Every issue of After the Gold Rush, we take a moment to focus on some of the real heroes of human progress- scientists. This issue we chose to focus on the brilliant mathematician, Katherine Johnson, who's mind and work enabled us to touch the stars, and come back home safely.
The art is by the very talented Christopher Knight, a great artist and person you should follow. Check out his Twitter here!
The most requested reward was a new ATGR T-Shirt, so here it is! Shirts will be in varied sizes, that will be selected post-Kickstarter. They are a great way to show your love of Science comics, and of course everyone's favorite skeptic-space-biologist, Scout!
The budget for #4 is a little higher then the previous chapters. This is so I can increase pay for the art team, plus hire a few more artists for the variant covers. Below is an approximation for a normal issue of After the Gold Rush's costs. However additional art costs are higher then on the chart below. But this shows the scale of the costs.
We will be printing the book with PrintNinja, so these will be of amazing quailty.
I try my very best to promote science for the common good with After the Gold Rush. Hopefully it does some good. But I wanted to take a moment and give a huge thank you to groups that are out there fighting the real fight. One group in particular I am inspired by is the "Science Moms." They are an empathetic and informed voice against the disinformation on the internet.
They have made a wonderful film that explain some of the pseudo-science that targets mothers, and you should really check it out!
Risks and challenges
I have ran several successful Kickstarters, and all of them have made the promised product and got it into backers hands. However, It is arrogant to assume that means risks are totally removed. There is always the possibility of a catastrophic event effecting a core creative member, or some unforeseen fiscal problem.
However, #1, #2, and #3 are already printed. #4 is getting close to being finished, so we just need the funds to fairly pay the art team and print/ship the book.
