About this project
Scout, the Last Scientist, returns to her ancestral home of Earth to find it in a state of wilderness. A story about the value of science & skepticism, and their conflict with religion and narrative-based thinking. After the Gold Rush is a return to optimistic Science Fiction - the idea that there is better living through science.
It is good to have warnings, but it is better to have goals. Science Fiction is full of important stories warning us about the dangers of our hubris. That is a useful lesson, but it shouldn't be all we use the genre for. I grew up watching Star Trek, a show about exploration, progress, and ethics. While it didn't always nail the details, it cared about science and reason. After the Gold Rush is my small attempt to return some of those ideas to modern Science-Fiction. This comic is also about the value of skepticism, and explaining what that means. Too often, skeptics are synonymous with cynics. I want to show what skepticism is really about - caring about what's true.
If you want to know more, check out the episode of Skeptics Guide to the Universe I was on. I go over my aspirations for the book in more depth.
Our first stretch goal! If the campign makes over $7,500 everyone who is getting an art print may select a second art print of the same or smaller size. And it has been unlocked!
Now unto more stickers! This is an extra 4x4 sticker for Carbon and up backers. It will be a shot of the ATGR #3 cover.
Miles Greb - Creator & Writer - Former Bob Dylan impersonator who's obsession with Star Trek is annoying to everyone.
Isaac La Russa - Lead Artist & Concept Artist - Based in Illinois, he wears motley flannels and owns two ungrateful cats.
Karoliina H - Colorist - A comic artist from Finland living in an ivory tower in the middle of a city, surrounded with figurines and stuff for drawing.
Andrew Pierce - Editor - Lovable goof. Escaped Kipling protagonist.
Jamie Me - Lettering - Letterer who spends his time wearing pajamas called a 'gi' while learning the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Barry Blankenship - Cover Artist & Logo Design - Amateur cursing cat ventriloquist.
Ben Rodgers - Assistant Editor - Historian of historical biographies, at least he was historically.

Naturally, the central rewards are books with pictures in them. Each issue of ATGR contains 22+ pages of the main story, a few pages of the web comic, a illustrated profile on a scientist, and a section to peer review the scientific accuracy of the book.
They are printed by PrintNinja using high quality gloss paper, and look great!
Alternate Art Album Covers!
I listen to a lot of music while working on After the Gold Rush, so I wanted to add some of the musical inspiration to the art of ATGR. We thought it would be awesome to make some alternate covers based on famous album covers. Here are the first three!
Stickers and Buttons!
When I was setting up the March for Science I made a series of buttons to promote different scientific fields, and people seemed to really like them. So now that I have button making technology I thought - why not use it to make some equally awesome After the Gold Rush buttons. So here they are!
One is Scout, in Final Fantasy Tactics style. The pixel art is by @VagrantPixels
The next is the cover of ATGR #3 of course, then just a picture of Scout being all cool.
The most requested reward was a new ATGR T-Shirt, so here it is! Shirts will be in varied sizes, that will be selected post-Kickstarter. They are a great way to show your love of Science comics, and of course everyone's favorite skeptic space biologist Scout!
The following prints can be selected in the 8 1/2 x 11 size (size of a normal piece of paper). They will be printed on high quality Card Stock with a beautiful glossy finish.
Art Prints - Larger Size
These are the poster sized art prints. They are also printed on a very high quailty card stock, with a glossy finish. We have set up the rewards to let you chose what poster you want, so here are your selections..
You can have yourself drawn into a Titan Explore or Cyro suit! These rewards are delivered digitally.
Titan Explorer Scarf
This scarf is hand crouched, and very limited. There is only one left! It features the logo from Earth's first manned exploration to Saturn's moon Titan. As well as the book's initials on the other side.
The budget for #3 is a little higher then the previous chapters. This is so I can increase pay for the art team, plus hire a few more artists for the variant covers. Below is an approximation for a normal issue of After the Gold Rush's costs. However additional art costs are higher then on the chart below.
Risks and challenges
I have ran several successful Kickstarters, and all of them have made the promised product and got it into backers hands. However, It is arrogant to assume that means risks are totally removed. There is always the possibility of a catastrophic event effecting a core creative member, or some unforeseen fiscal problem.
However, #1 and #2 are already printed. #3 is getting close to being finished, so we just need the funds to fairly pay the art team and print/ship the book.
