BreakBall is a Science Fiction action comic written and illustrated by Gavin Weir.
On a parallel world named Asylan, government and civilization itself have almost completely collapsed due to problems caused by overpopulation and debt. With the economy sinking, society was on the verge of revolt on a global scale.
Slowly the friction between cultures and their governments, as well as governments and one another began to grow.
Suddenly, mysterious catastrophic events erupted simultaneously across the planet destroying the ten largest cities on Asylan. With the ten largest sources of economic growth laid to waste, a world summit was held and the governments of Asylan merged into a sovereign ruling body.
The first act of the reformed ruling body was to pass several new laws; Anyone in debt would be shipped into space to a continent sized space colony. The inhabitants of the Lusiphur colony are entered into a random lottery the winners of which are chosen to be BreakBall players. To refuel the economy and entertain the wealthy, gambling on BreakBall is made legal and is regulated by the government.
BreakBall players enter sixteen-man battles to fight for both their lives and to remove years of debt from their sentence of indentured servitude. People from all walks of life and cultures are chosen to play this enthralling death sport. As time goes by, Asylan stabilizes and BreakBall becomes the number one sport on the planet and the destroyed cities are used as the arenas to host the games.
This story follows the team The Onitsuka Oni as they play through a season fighting for survival, freedom, and learning exactly how intrinsic BreakBall is to every part of their society.
