[Video content warning: mention of sexual assault and other potentially triggering items from submitted problems]
Problem Glyphs has been the subject of artist Eliza Gauger's attention since autumn 2013. She has crafted over two hundred sigils in response to the deepest, darkest problems submitted anonymously online by thousands of individuals. Drawing upon her background in fine art, mythology, and the occult, Gauger responds to these problems by creating intricate, symbol-laden glyphs that are published online with an accompanying descriptive title, free of charge.
Created in collaboration with Strix Publishing, this book will showcase Gauger’s work on Problem Glyphs in an edition worthy of space on your coffee table or book shelf.
Molly Crabapple— "Eliza Gauger's problem glyphs take crowdsourced agonies and crystallize them into symbols. In the beginning, art was inseparable from magic, and Gauger returns it to its roots, in a twist updated to the pace, needs, and logic of the network."
Warren Ellis— "Sometimes you don't fully understand your fears and ghosts until they're put in front of you, so you can exorcise them. It's a spiky, painful thing. Problem Glyphs are spiky, painful things. That's why they were, and are, needed by so many people."
Neil Gaiman— "I think it's a beautiful way of talking about problems, empowering people, and letting the magic of art happen in their lives."
The Problem Glyphs art book is included with all rewards starting at the $40 reward level. Problem Glyphs is expected to retail for $49.99, and we are pleased to be able to make it available at this lower price for our Kickstarter backers. All rewards that include the physical book also include an eBook version. The eBook is also available alone as a reward at the $25 level, and has been made available primarily for international backers who wish to support this Kickstarter but are unable to afford international shipping.
In support of the Problem Glyphs art book, a Kickstarter-exclusive glyph, [WILD HUNT], has been created. Prints of this glyph are included only at the $60 reward level and above, and not as an add-on. Once this Kickstarter and the post-campaign pledge manager end, this glyph will never again be available. This print will be offered as a limited edition 8x10" giclée, numbered to match the final quantity produced for backers. Each print will be personally signed in irreproducible gold ink by Eliza Gauger.
Backers may also choose rewards that include sets of 8x10"giclée prints of glyphs from the book's contents. Typically selling for $30+, we are happy to make them available at a lower price via this Kickstarter. Simply choose any of the rewards that include additional glyph prints from the rewards menu at right, and in the survey later this year backers can specify glyphs from this list of the 100 glyphs included in the book.
Individual glyph prints are also available as add-ons. See below for more information.
Backers at the $200 Personal Glyph reading receive all of the previous rewards plus a private web-streamed video session with Eliza Gauger in which she will perform a divinatory reading for you from her personal glyph deck.
Backers at the $350 Art Instruction level will receive an invite to a group session of no more than 10 other backers for a web-streamed, interactive class of art instruction. They will also receive a physical copy of the Problem Glyphs art book, a digital copy of the book, a single limited edition 8x10" giclée art print of the Kickstarter exclusive glyph, [WILD HUNT], and five (5) 8x10" giclée art prints of your choice from the 100 glyphs included in the book.
Backers at the $500 Personal Art Instruction level will receive an invite to a private, web-streamed, interactive class of art instruction.
A limited number of large format, 6x4’, oil-on-canvas personal glyph paintings have been made available for backers at the $2,000 reward level. These glyphs will be created by Gauger, in collaboration with you to represent your life, challenges, dreams, and personal mythology. Backers at this level will receive everything included in the $500 reward, as well as any items unlocked via stretch goals during the campaign.
Add-ons are additional items you may purchase in addition to your chosen reward. Add-ons are only available to backers who have pledged $40 or more.
Select an add-on by doing the following:
Click the “manage your pledge” button on the project page.
Increase your pledge by the amount needed to claim the add-on(s).
Save your pledge. Do not change the tier that you originally pledged at.
Backers at the $40 reward and higher may choose to purchase multiple copies of the Problem Glyphs art book, up to a total of 5, for an additional $40 per copy.
Backers at the $40 reward and higher may also choose to add-on 8x10" giclée art prints of any of the 100 glyphs included in the book. Please see this link for options. There is no need to inform us which glyphs you want at this time, you will be given the option to choose the specific prints you would like when you receive the survey we will email you later this year. You may choose any number or combination of glyphs from the list.
Backers at the $40 reward and higher may also pledge an additional $75 for a personal, digitally streamed divinatory glyph-deck card reading with creator, Eliza Gauger. These card-readings will be privately video streamed and last approximately 30-45 minutes. Card readings are for entertainment purposes only.
Backers at the $40 reward and higher may also pledge an additional $5 to receive a bookplate label personally signed by Eliza Gauger.
An elegant black ribbon bookmark will be added to the print run of the Problem Glyphs art book!
Shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter finishes based on actual costs incurred to ship. We will collect shipping from you when you receive your survey from Backerkit later this year. The following shipping estimates are for your general information at this time. You will be charged for shipping via the survey later in the year, so please do not add shipping to your Kickstarter pledge!
At this time international shipping is unavoidably expensive. We're sorry we can't do more but for a small press publisher international distribution options are unrealistic.
Shipping estimates are based on projections for the 12x10", 220 page book. These estimates are subject to change based on final book weight, dimensions and pledge information.
United States: $6 - $7 (book only), $13-15 (with prints)
Risks and challenges
Any publishing endeavor carries with it certain challenges, particularly when dealing with overseas printers. Last minute typographical errors during final proofing or shipping delays caused by weather can result in delays. However, the main work on this book has been completed and the files are nearly press ready. We expect no significant problems in the production of our print run. As well, Strix Publishing's owner, Simon Berman, has several years of experience with Kickstarter both in terms of campaigns and rewards fulfillment, and is supported by a team of professionals with decades of experience in printing and publishing. He has previously overseen three ambitious Kickstarters with thousands of satisfied backers. While we are very confident in our ability to fulfill your pledges, we will maintain transparency throughout the process and keep you informed as to any delays that may arise. We understand that you are placing not just your trust in our hands, but your hard earned dollars, and we are committed to making good on our promises. Thank you so much for your trust and support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
