I have become known for abstract or loosely figurative works of art, which reflect spontaneity, strong rhythm, texture and color blends. One of my early mentors was Otis Art Institute professor Kanemitsu, who had a similar approach to the paint. My father was a jazz musician, and he trained my ear early on. Although I enjoyed sketching, while growing up, and studied dance, music was a central force.
Culturally speaking, I am a split between the strong African American roots of the jazz...
