To provide a complete 3D manufacturing facility for
artists and designers that will make scanning and printing 3D objects
accessible, and more importantly, affordable. The tools that will be made available would be a 3D printer, a laser
cutter, and a vinyl cutter, alongside soldering irons and a sewing machine for
use with conductive thread.
We are aiming to purchase two 3D printers, 10kg of filament
in ABS and PLA, a laser cutter, and a vinyl cutting machine, which will offer a comprehensive digitisation facility in our MediaLab. We will also build a dedicated area devoted
to additive manufacturing.
As a charity that offers support for over 700 artists and
designers, an affordable and accessible 3D reproduction facility will not only
continue our remit to support artists and designers, but will also allow for
creatives across London to try their hand at taking their ideas to a level that
may not have been evident before.
What will differentiate our provisions from similar
commercial entities in London is that we will also host regular events,
lectures, and seminars that will focus on the discourse associated with digital
manufacturing processes. In essence, we are not purely focusing on the how of making, but also the why.
We want to encourage and support a wide range of practitioners, across all ages and backgrounds, to think, make, play, and question.
Memberships for only £20/year will ensure that individuals will have access to all of the facilities.
You will be part of a network open to likeminded
individuals who are passionate about how technology can influence our daily
Risks and challenges
With ever increasing demands we anticipate the following risks and challenges:
1) Ensuring that the individuals using the machines are made aware of correct file types required in order to create satisfactory outputs. We will provide regular on-going workshops that will address these concerns.
2) Providing and maintaining prices for scans and prints that offers excellent value for money when compared to other commercial manufacturing facilities.
3) Ensuring the output is up to standard, even with machines costing significantly less than commercial facilities.
4) Providing 1:1 technical assistance where and when required. The amount of time spent with individuals may vary according to the requirements.

Bear hugs and a big thank you are in order. Receive an object from our 3D printer and your choice of a free one-day course from our MediaLab programme, as well as all the benefits of being a SPACE Friend for one year.
You are an ice lolly on a hot summer day (without the melting dribbles that ultimately ruin your shirt)! You get a membership, a Rhino3D introduction course, AND you'll get to create your object in the Fab Lab.
You are a substantially-sized diamond! We’ll make you a SPACE Patron, giving you your name on the website, invitations to special events, as well as invites to all of our openings. We’ll even give you a free day of use of either our White Building Event Space or our Big Hires Studio at our HQ on Mare Street.
For great generosity comes great rewards. As well as becoming a Patron with all of the benefits above, you’ll receive a unique 3D printed object by internationally renowned artist, Ryan Gander. It will come with a signed certificate of authenticity. Each piece will be a part of his sculpture 'The money flows through you'.
