KYRIE is a 16-page short story, set in 3rd century CE Roman North Africa.
A curious band of thieves and cut-throats attempt to outsmart the Egyptian authorities, while navigating their own dark and competing desires as outlaws of Rome.
KYRIE (from Ancient Greek Κύριε, pronounced "Keer-i-ay") is a blend of three of my passions: Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, dynamic illustration, and compelling storytelling.
Though still a stand-alone short story, KYRIE is written as a functional prologue, and will exemplify the style, characters and scope of an upcoming long-form adventure epic, to be produced separately and further down the road.
In other words, KYRIE is Chapter One - delivered to your email inbox for any donation tier amount!
This project is the culmination of a year's worth of intensive art and story development. Every panel has been hammered out, every story point finely sharpened, and every speech bubble exquisitely positioned for your enjoyment.
But KYRIE needs one week's worth of committed attention before the project is completed, and Summer 2014 is the last chance I have to finish it!
My promise: 7 days of full-time work from me and $1 or more from you, and you'll have a short comic in your inbox that meets or exceeds the quality of the artwork on this page.
KYRIE is thoroughly researched, making use of the best available scholarly historical and archeological material out there for the Mediterranean world in the 3rd century CE.
Whether you're a Late Roman textile buff or an aficionado in all things Ptolemaic, my aim from the start has been to satisfy your every excessively obscure interest (because it's mine as well).
Fortunately, I can produce it for cheap! All I need is one week to produce the finished artwork for the 16 pages, but I need to take off of work to do it - and unfortunately it has to be before August (when I'll be starting medical school and have to set all projects like this aside for several years).
Now that this KYRIE has reached its $500 goal, I wanted to thank everyone who has donated or helped spread the word, and offer a few extra incentives for extra contributions.
$1000 ------------------------------ I can make an all new, full color, original 11"x17" 'thank you' illustration with KYRIE's characters, and send it in PDF to EVERY CONTRIBUTOR!
Risks and challenges
The reason this Kickstarter campain has such a low projected goal ($500) is for one single, simple reason:
I am starting medical school this Fall, and I need to take 1 week off from work before the semester starts in order to take KYRIE from its current rough draft version to completion. If I don't take off that one week (and financially justify it to my better half), I will probably not have any time to return to this project between now and 2016 (and that's speaking optimistically). Terrible, but true.
One week is more than enough time to complete the comic. I will be doing any additional prep work between now and when final production starts in late July, and I will have a bit of spill-over time in August if there's an emergency.
If I can't complete the comic, I'm refunding everyone's contributions for the whole project. Seriously. I'm not interested in making a profit on this comic - I only want to keep the bills paid while I complete it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
