About this project
While you’re listening to headphones, you can be totally isolated from the world as you enjoy being immersed in your favorite music.
BUT… this means you will miss hearing important outside sounds like:
- A person trying to get your attention
- Someone at the door, package delivery
- At work: announcements, phone calls, coworkers, the boss
- At home: hearing family members or pets, something happening outside
- At the airport: announcements in the terminal or on the plane
- Outdoors: driver alerting you, car honk
- Unexpected events
SoundBrake listens to your surroundings and instantly streams in outside sounds ONLY when they're above an alert level, which adapts to your surroundings after a button press. Now you can be aware of sounds like a door knock, phone call, announcement, car honk, or someone trying to get your attention. You won't know SoundBrake is there while it's not alerting you.
Attach it to any headphones and audio player, such as a laptop, computer, smartphone, or tablet. Use it with Bluetooth headphones with the attachment of a Bluetooth module.
The world is unpredictable. Hear unexpected sounds.
This is what SoundBrake is like from your perspective:
That’s it! You’ll hear outside sounds streamed in when they’re louder than the alert level.
If you're using Bluetooth headphones, plug the Bluetooth transmitter module into SoundBrake instead of the headphone cord. Pair your headphones with the Bluetooth transmitter.
After you press a button, SoundBrake samples your surroundings and creates a custom alert level.
Your headphones will instantly stream in outside sounds only when they're louder than the custom alert level.
SoundBrake adds a layer of safety to outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, or running. Don't miss out on hearing a car honking at you or someone shouting about an impending danger.

I'm Shari Eskenas, the founder of Sundae Electronics and inventor of SoundBrake. I thought of the idea for SoundBrake while I was working as an electrical engineer. The workplace had a no-headphones policy with the rationale that people could potentially be unaware of an emergency.
This is what inspired me to create SoundBrake...and that's how the journey began! I recognized the widespread problem of people being oblivious to their surroundings while listening to headphones. I designed the electronics and software, and teamed up with additional companies for product development and manufacturing. It has been over two years in the making. I'm very passionate about delivering a high quality product that will enhance your headphone experience.
In early 2016, Sundae Electronics produced SoundBrake Generation 1.0 as the result of a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign. SoundBrake 1.0 instantly silenced your audio to alert you of outside sounds. In addition to the industrial design and LED indicators, the major improvement of SoundBrake 2.0 is that outside sound is instantly streamed into your headphones so you can clearly hear outside sound above the alert level.
We're excited to have you become part of our journey in bringing SoundBrake 2.0 from a working prototype into a retail ready product. Funds from this project will be used for:
We can't wait to let all our supporters be the first to get it.
Envy Creative (www.thinkenvy.com) did a great job with video production for our campaign video.
Calpak USA (www.calpak-usa.com) is an engineering and manufacturing company that did excellent work on circuit board assembly for our prototypes.
Scicon Technologies (www.scicontech.com) is a rapid prototype and manufacturing company that was able to do the high precision and high quality 3D printing that was required for the prototype enclosure parts.

Note about International Shipping:
International shipments may be subject to import taxes, customs duties, and fees levied by the destination country. We don't have control over these charges and you will be responsible for fulfilling them. When customs clearance procedures are required, it can cause a delay beyond our delivery estimate.
Risks and challenges
We have a fully functional prototype that has been developed over two years. The manufacturer we selected for production has decades of experience in audio. While there is always the risk of unforeseen delays in the manufacturing process, we have done our best to create a realistic timeline for delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
