About this project
The Great Escape is about a 21 year old net-gen film maker going from our generation’s wired, ultra engaged lifestyle to off-the-grid, sustainable living. The goals of the project are to promote alternative, sustainable lifestyles, to help the average American learn that there is another way to live, and to showcase simple practices we can all engage in to help heal our earth and our bodies all while enjoying modern comforts. During the project I will keep a blog with reflections, daily practices, and various media updates.
I have begun documenting my gradual immersion into minimalism, sustainable practices, and meditation while living in a house with 5 avid computer gamers. The bulk of my story will be told when I relocate from my city life in Columbus, the third largest city in the Mid-West, to a seventeen acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside Asheville, N.C in late March. The property is owned by family friends who will, in time, build a sustainable, multi-generational family homestead there. I will begin working on infrastructure for them, including planting orchards, raising livestock, and preparing gardens, all in exchange for the immediate use of the land for my own project.
For my project, I am hoping to utilize solar energy as well as a bicycle generator to provide what little electricity I require. There is a river running though the property which provides clean water and there is already a composting toilet on site. I am hoping to live in semi-permanent structure such as a yurt. I also plan to engage in a daily meditation practice, so that I address not only the issue of external noise and clutter, but internal noise and clutter as well. I will film the practices of my daily life, along with my thoughts and reflections. Asheville is a cultural hub for sustainable alternative lifestyles, I will showcase various organizations and individuals working towards a greener more peaceful tomorrow in this hippie hub!
What's my funding for?
Good question, I'm in production now and it's not cheap! I've still got some small pieces of equipment to purchase and post to worry about. I'm trying to raise enough money to see this project though completion.
- Equipment Costs-Audio and Lighting equipment
