LOTUS Life Learning - Personal Empowerment for Students
LOTUS Life Skills is a comprehensive program including a textbook and workbook to promote personal empowerment for at-risk youth.
This LOTUS Skills program is the culmination of my lifetime of experience as a teacher and a personal empowerment coach. I have lost too many students to suicide, drugs and alcohol, mental health struggles and plain old poverty. Life is hard enough without the brutal reality of abuse, addiction, domestic violence, and homelessness.
They told me their secrets and broke my heart. There was a girl who was impregnated by her own father. The child was given to another family member to raise. She worked hard in English class and found a way to rise and flourish. Another girl was diagnosed with Leukemia in the ninth grade. She struggled and fought for her life, and today she is a college students and a soldier. Seeing her blindingly beautiful smile on Facebook, I believe she is living the LOTUS life.
I have worked with students in drop out programs, refugee centers, migrant worker populations, and students struggling with addiction and emotional and mental disorders. Every single one of them was born innocent and beautiful, a life and a self unique in the universe. With the right personal empowerment skills, they can reclaim their personal autonomy and create the lives they want and deserve.
I am designing this program to help the students like these who are still struggling. There is a way out - a way to honor yourself and grow out of any tragedy or chaos.
This is my purpose. My mission is to bring personal empowerment work to students in grades 7-12 through the production of a textbook and workbook on living the LOTUS life, surviving and thriving in whatever conditions life gives us.
This project is for the development of a program to help struggling teens and young people recover from difficult life experiences. LOTUS Skills is a comprehensive program for schools and districts interested in helping struggling students learn to navigate through life's challenges and develop the academic and personal skills necessary for real success.
I will write and publish a textbook called "Life of the Lotus" which will show teens who struggle with mental health, emotional issues, addiction, and other problems stemming from difficult life circumstances how to survive and thrive. Just like the lotus flower grows out of mud, we can grow out of our difficulties.
The kind of personal empowerment experience I will bring to students is something that usually is only reserved for professionals who can afford thousands of dollars for a weekend workshop in leadership and empowerment skills. Help me help them!
Components of the program include:
-Experiential workshops for students
-Professional development seminars for staff Training, resources and support for your student leaders in the LOTUS Life peer counseling program
-Staff Training, workbooks and other support material resources for teachers who may struggle with the emotional exhaustion that comes from working with troubled youth.
- After the staff and student workshops, the LOTUS Skills program will provide support for an ongoing peer support program in the school district.

Risks and challenges
I have fifteen years experience as a classroom teacher working with "high risk" populations and three years experience writing and facilitating personal empowerment workshops. With a BFA in creative writing, I am uniquely positioned to develop a textbook and program to help young people become empowered.
I worked as an English teacher with high-risk student populations in North Dakota (on two reservations) and in urban and rural Arizona. I was highly successful in building mentoring relationships with students who were struggling to overcome life's challenges. I then worked for three years are a facilitator with a personal empowerment workshop series. I now seek to bring this work to these at risk student populations.
One of the biggest challenges will be the cost of printing materials. Most schools will not have access to extra funds in order to help me make this project into reality, so I will have much better luck getting to the most vulnerable populations if I can offer these programs free of charge to the schools and school districts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
