About this project
It all started with a simple Google search on "Corporal Punishment". I have discovered that almost half the states in the U.S. still allow the use of corporal punishment in public schools. Over two hundred thousand kids are disciplined in this manner every year. A great percentage of those hits take place in just a few states. The three states with the highest percentage of reported cases are Alabama, Texas and Mississippi.
*Surprisingly, a large percentage of these students have some type of disability or suffer from autism.
That fact drove me to start this film. It raised so many questions about our education system that I felt I had to explore the issue further. We will travel the country and bring this topic to light with candid interviews from people that represent both sides of this polarizing issue.
Here are the latest reported statistics from 2008. Source: (infoplease.com)
*HB 359 recently passed in the Texas House and Senate. The bill is pending and has been sent to Texas Governor Rick Perry.
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy introduced a bill on September 21, 2011 to ban corporal punishment in U.S. public schools nationally. We are working to score an interview with her in late October.
We are relying on donations via Kickstarter to help fund this project. It will allow us to retain complete financial and creative control over this film. It is very important for us to remain impartial and present both sides with fairness and respect. We are filmmakers, not politicians.
We have set our funding goal at the bare minimum that it will take for us to travel to the locations, interview over sixty people, create graphics to represent current statistics and have enough left over to edit and submit to film festivals.
Every penny raised here will go directly to the filmmaking process. Nothing will go to waste. We could always use more to hire production staff, travel to more states and interview more people. At least 10% of our funding will go directly to Kickstarter and an additional 5% will be used to fulfill rewards. Please feel free to help us exceed our funding goal of $33K. Every penny helps. Our TBOE rewards are limited and exclusive to kickstarter contributors. Once they are gone there will be no more.
Please help support this film however you can. Even if you are not able to donate, just spreading the word is really helpful. Here are a few ways that you can help.
Tell your friends, family and local public schools about our project.
We are so thankful to have the opportunity to create this film. We really appreciate your support. Thanks!
**Chris Crary Hooked up the edit for this new KS trailer. Thanks brother!
