My two favourite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything. –Peter Golkin
We need help!
Since 2013, the BIBLIOBICICLETA has given away over a thousand free books to readers of all ages in the great city of San Francisco.
Although the BIBLIOBICICLETA has met great success in fulfilling it's mission to instill a love of reading, learning, and bicycling... the hills of San Francisco have limited the ability of the BIBLIOBICICLETA to expand its outreach to further parts of the city. Furthermore, the brakes of the current of BIBLIOBICICLETA have made it unsafe to travel down hills
PUBLIC Bikes has generously offered to tremendously cut down the price of their e-bike from $2,499 to just $1,000 if that money is fundraised! We are asking for help to raise funds to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.
With your contribution, BIBLIOBICICLETA can travel safely to outer reaches of San Francisco and beyond! Please help us continue our work beyond our current limits!
- Electric Bike from PUBLIC at a special discounted price of = $1,000
- Custom Bikes At Work Trailer Hitch to fit e-bike = $65
- Rewards $35
- Flamingos, duh! You'll know the BIBLIOBICICLETA is near, follow the garden flamingos to the free books. ($40 for 4 flamingos)
- Venturing out of San Francisco and to other parts of the country, especially where local governments are banning books or closing libraries.
- More children's books for our favorite patrons! ($=anything helps!)
- LED Strip Tape Lights for the BACK of the BIBLIOBICICLETA trailer for early nightfall on upcoming winter days! ($30 for two blue strips)
- Twin Panniers for even more book storage and to carry BIBLIOBICICLETA bookmarks and swag. ($89 from PUBLIC)
How you can help:
The BIBLIOBICICLETA hopes to come alive with the help of your talents, service, time, generous contributions. Spread the word, believe in the idea, share with your friends and family. Any support in any shape or form is GREATLY appreciated.
If you are a fellow bicyclist and would like to be a fellow bibliobicicleta rider, let me know.
What is the BIBLIOBICICLETA?
The BIBLIOBICICLETA is a traveling trade library bike to promote a love of learning and literacy. Page by page, book by book, pedal by pedal. What started out as a dream came true thanks to people like you who believed in and generously funded the idea. You can find the BIBLIOBICICLETA popping up in the Panhandle, parks, beaches, bicycle and literacy events, and various neighborhoods in San Francisco. Best of all, all books are FREE! Free books and fresh air, what more do you need?
Why are you calling it BIBLIOBICICLETA 3.0?
Bibliobicicleta 1.0 was just a front basket full of books on bike. Bibliobicicleta 2.0 is what it currently is today, Bibliobicicleta 3.0 is what is, but with an ELECTRIC boost!
Why don't you just get an e-kit for your current bike?
We've consulted with various bicycle/e-bike enthusiasts who all agree that given the fact that we're trailing free books, it would be safe and wise to get a new e-bicycle equipped with disc brakes. The amount of money it would take to kit the current bicycle with an e-motor and equip with disc brakes is equal/more than the cost PUBLIC Bikes is offering.
Where do you get your books?
People like you! The beauty of the BIBLIOBICICLETA is that we accept handfuls of books from people in our communities that stop by and drop them off when we pop up in the neighborhood.
Who are you?
I'm a school librarian that loves to give away free books in my free time with the hope that people take them home and open them to discover new things about themselves through the written word. I believe that reading transforms lives and that books actually bring people closer to one another, whether we talk about them or we learn to see the world with new eyes and words to express our thoughts with.
Special thanks to Kristin Tieche, Dan Nguyen-Tan and the PUBLIC Bikes Team, Jim of Bikes at Work, Danielle Farinacci, and Jay Simpson.
