While mead may represent the oldest fermented beverage, with a rich history in many parts of the world, many remain unfamiliar with this magnificent beverage. Become part of the Mead Renaissance - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/08/dining/mead-enjoys-a-renaissance.html
The RVA Mead Lab will be a small facility in Midlothian, VA, a place for people interested in mead making (and the related activity of beekeeping) to visit and learn more - by observing, participating, formulating recipes, collaborating, tasting, and innovating.
The RVA Mead Lab will be equipped with all the necessary equipment and ingredients for making a 1 to 5 gallon batch of mead. Equipment, supplies, and guidance are provided as part of membership; brewers can also bring their own ingredients (honey, yeast, fruits in season, herbs, spices, etc.) or purchase supplies from the Lab at cost.
The Lab will serve as a collaborative, sharing space to develop mead recipes that are considered best in their class (in all types of mead including traditional, melomel, metheglin, braggot, cyser, pyment) and forumulated to appeal to a broad range of tastes.
All meads will be carefully documented with recipe information stored digitally. Visitors will use questionnaires to evaluate meads, and those judged as best in class or as having special appeal will be shared at regional homebrew club meetings for additional evaluation. If desired, these may also be entered in local, regional, or national contests for further evaluation.
During the Lab’s operation, there will be a feasibility study on the current market for mead with the goal of establishing a craft meadery in the Richmond area.
Risks and challenges
The primary risk to any brewing operation is lack of sanitation and/or temperature control.
As a brewer for more than 20 years, I am committed to a sanitary facility, and will use a portion of the kickstarter funding to build a fermentation room with well regulated temperature.
This laboratory will be a truly collaborative experience, where innovation takes place. Some experiments will not be successful, but they will help drive further enhancements and discoveries. The future of mead is bright, and you can help shine the light!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
