As seen on Good Mythical Morning!
e·nig·ma - a person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand.
The Enigma Orb is a visceral experience. Watch as the unique shapes come together to form a perfect sphere. Hear the snap as you correctly fit the pieces. Feel the smooth concrete and imagine the sphere being made of weathered rock. The Enigma Orb can also serve as a receptacle. Pull it apart and see what mystery lies within. Perhaps it’s a gift? A secret note? Or maybe just a smaller Orb…
How Does it Work? Small magnets are encased just under the surface of the concrete puzzle pieces. The shape of the puzzle pieces and the position of the magnets allow only one way to complete the puzzle. You’ll know when two pieces snap sharply and perfectly together that you’re on the right track.
There are three different sizes of puzzles: 6-piece small, 12-piece medium, and 18-piece large. Every piece has 6 to 8 magnets embedded to ensure a strong lock as the Orb is assembled. Even better, the small fits inside the medium, and the medium inside the large. Every piece is coated with polyurea for superior durability and a glossy finish.
Colors: Once we're funded, you can choose from three colors: white (no stain), black, and light blue. The stains are dynamic and permanent, so while your color will never fade, no two pieces will look exactly the same. Coloring can be solid or two-tone, with half of the pieces stained one color and the other half another color. This means your orbs can be all-white, all-black, all-blue, black & white, black & blue, or white & blue. Additional colors are available at our stretch goals (see below).
Glass: For a flat rate of $5 per orb ($10 for a Duo, $15 for a Trio) we will inlay glass into the face of your orb. We have 6 glass colors available: Black, White, Blue, Green, Orange/Red, and Yellow. You can choose 1 glass color per orb. Make sure to adjust your pledge accordingly and we'll follow up after the project is funded to get your glass choices.
Some of you may be interested in more then 1 reward. You also will notice that Kickstarter will only let you make 1 pledge for this project, and select one reward. What to do!?
We're glad to work it out. Send us a message and we'll help you adjust the pledge to get whatever combination of rewards you'd like.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let us know. We will be sending out a survey to get your preferences after the project is funded and will confirm with you before production to make sure you get your rewards just the way you want them.
You can unlock additional colors! By adding more customization options, we increase the complexity of the production process and the cost of both supplies and labor. Once we hit the following stretch goals we'll be able to provide the full array of stain options:
$17,500 - Rust
$20,000 - Green
$22,000 - Tan
ManufacturingThe concept of the Enigma Orb has undergone an extensive process of analysis and experimentation in pursuit of perfection. Early Orbs were handmade from clay. Over time, we’ve found the ideal concrete mix for look, feel, durability, castability, and curing time. Embedded N50 neodymium magnets, 6mm in diameter and 3mm thick, ensure the puzzle will never lose its snap over time. Coloring is produced with a stain that permanently reacts with the concrete, for a look that lasts.
In order to obtain the smoothest feel and best fit for the Orb, original molds need to be 3D printed. From these originals we create flexible rubber molds to cast the concrete, scaling the number of molds to meet the demand of the project. The molds are specially designed to hold the magnets in the exact position and correct polarity to ensure a perfect fit between the pieces after the concrete cures. After curing and optional staining/sealing, orbs are ready to be shipped to you for assembly.
This is a limited opportunity to obtain a unique puzzle at an affordable price. Once we are able to make the investments in improving the construction process for the Enigma Orb, we want to explore other possibilities for it and this casting technique in the fine arts realm, experimenting with new customizations and evolutions.
While the concrete is a strong and durable material it is not indestructible, so play rough at your own risk! Normal assembly should not result in any damage to the pieces, and we also apply a high gloss protective coating to the surface that will prevent dirty fingers from staining the pieces. Should a piece get dirty, gently wash it with water, vigorous scrubbing with an abrasive could damage the surface.
We’re running a Giveaway!
That’s right, you could get a small Enigma Orb for FREE. All you need to do is take a minute to share some kind words about this project on social media so we can keep the momentum going. Link to the project and use the hashtag #EnigmaOrbs and each week we’ll pick a winner at random on both Facebook and Twitter. That’s up to 8 chances to win! It doesn’t matter if you’ve already pledged or not, or how big or small your network is. Just post or tweet with a link to the project and use #EnigmaOrbs, it’s that easy!
100% of the goal goes to producing the orbs. A large chunk goes towards equipment and materials costs: concrete, rubber, 3D prints, magnets, grinders, and so on. Another portion pays for labor involved in producing the pieces. And a small portion covers the Kickstarter fees.
Risks and challenges
While we have extensive experience and have spent an extensive amount of time testing prototypes and honing design, unforeseen delays or risks are possible with any product manufacturing project. We are confident in the scalability of the project and will certainly be able to meet our Early Bird fulfillments, but complications could potentially delay the delivery of products, especially as scale increases. Should any such delay or issue arise, we will notify you immediately and keep you updated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
