About this project
PLASTIC BOTTLE CUTTER
The absolutely astonishing amount of plastic bottles that everyone uses and throws into the garbage can every day is truly impressive. This represents an economic waste, since the plastic of bottles is a commodity that is worth money and can be reused. Also, from an ecological perspective, this poses several problems. Even when sent for recycling, the volume of plastic bottles makes it challenging to transport and accommodate them efficiently.
So we thought about it and asked ourselves: What if we could just smartly and easily cut plastic bottles and turn them into convenient ropes? That’s what made us develop the Plastic Bottle Cutter, a smart pocket-size tool with which you can very easily cut any plastic bottle – of juice, soda or other – into a fine plastic rope that can be used for just about as many purposes as you can think of.
Whether it is for handy and DYI purposes, for creative uses and arts & crafts, for car towing (really!), or even to survive a zombie post-apocalyptical world, the plastic ropes that you can turn plastic bottles into can be extremely useful.
Plus, even from a recycling point of view, by cutting them into ropes, you’ll be dramatically reducing the volume of plastic bottles – and space they occupy on their way to being recycled.
The Plastic Bottle Cutter is also made with eco-friendly materials. It is very resistant, easy to keep, carry or store, and it can be your long-lasting strategic ally to turning plastic bottle problems into smart plastic solutions.
Does this make sense to you? If so:
- We invite you to secure your early access to the Plastic Bottle Cutter, in special conditions, while also supporting it and helping to bring it into existence – please take a look at our rewards to choose how you will be part of this smart tool’s history.
- We also invite you to share this campaign page with your friends and family members who may also want a Plastic Bottle Cutter of their own.
Thank you and we hope to be sending your Plastic Bottle Cutter soon!
This campaign is dedicated to our loved ones.
Olga - you're the best what happend in my life!
Risks and challenges
We really do not anticipate any special risks or challenges for this campaign. We have the produced, tried and tested prototypes, so the only challenge that we are looking at is that of getting the crowd to know about the Plastic Bottle Cutter and back it. However, we believe that its utility is so obvious, that we believe it will generate the backing force it needs to come into existence.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
It has exactly the same functionality. But Special Kickstarter edition cutter has designed aluminium part and special "Kickstarter Edition" laser inscription on wood.
Actually we are launching a project on Kickstarter only so you can pledge for your bottle cutter on the right side of this page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/910418035/plastic-bottle-cutter
There is no webshop, retail or wholesale distribution till the end of KickStarter campaign at 23 april 2016.
Please support us and our project and prepurchase your plastic bottle cutter on this Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/910418035/plastic-bottle-cutter
Cutters baked in march will be sent it in July 2016.
Unfortunately we cannot send it earlier because of large amount already ordered and ongoing upgrade of our manufacturing machines.
It hurts us too, it seems the delivery cost is the biggest issue of our project for a moment.
But delivery from France to some distant countries like USA, Australia or Japan is really expensive (24 euros) without any alternative solutions and for the obvious reasons.
For a moment we can offer these solutions:
If you back for 1 cutter - delivery cost is 24 euro
If you back for 2 - it is 12 euros for each
If you back for 3 cutters - its only 8 for each.
We have added a lot of 5 cutters (under 500 grams delivery cost is the same), - so you could share other 4 cutters with your friends and delivery for one will be less than 5 euros.
So you can back for more and - this could be less expensive solution.
We are looking for other delivery solutions but for a moment it's not clear yet, please stay tuned.
With all ours respect to all inventors and their crafts, this plastic bottle cutter is our own invention.
The idea of cutting the PET bottles to strings is very old, I have seen a man attaching his tent with hand cut bottle almost twenty years ago in 1997, since that date you can find many different ways to cut PET bottles. Now it’s absolutely impossible to define the first “inventor” of idea of cutting the bottles.
Just to be clear - we have never said that we invented idea of bottle strings, but we are offering device which can cut bottles AND can be carried in pocket.
Plastic bottle cutter allows you to work in easiest way without special table, reel, fixation, big pin of 30cms to fix the bottle and other troublesome parts.
If you have some patience - you could find some brasilian videos of various factory cutters which can cut 10 bottles per minute, some of them are are more than 10 years old. All of them are different.
But there is one nice, handy, made from natural materials, 100% recyclable, carried in a pocket with adjusted width of string - it's plastic bottle cutter your one and only.
Plastic Bottle Cutter was designed by us, as unique, handy, simple and reliable device from sketches to final version. Here is the full evolution of our project from raw prototype to release version: http://www.plasticbottlecutter.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/bg-line001.jpg
The corners of the string are rather sharp, you can distinctly feel the corner with fingers - but it does not hurt the skin(if normal using). Together with Pavel we have cut few kilometers of ropes during our tests and the rope does not hurt normal skin, not more than usual rope.
But if you wish to obtain the smooth corners - you can put the string into boiling water for a 1-2 seconds - corners will become smooth, but pay attention to general deformation it can be very surprizing! Actually we are looking how to make corners smoother without hot water.
You can change the blade anytime, just use common small cutter blade of 9mm large - like this one: http://www.olfa.co.uk/ds_16-ABS.jpg
We advise to use four segments at once, but you can cut bottles with three or even two.
Here you can see how to install the blade (put the sharp side inside): https://youtu.be/JMbT4DOi21U…
Because of flexible position of the blade - you can use it for very-very long time.
As it is fixed in optimal cutting position - deformation of the blade is minimal. But if the blade becomes blunt - you have just to move it one millimeter left or right - so it will use sharp part of the blade again.
Because of constant angle of cut and minimal point of contact four segments of standard 9mm blade can be used for months. We were very surprised cutting more than 100 of bottles with the same blade during our tests!
You don't need to heat the bottles to upcycle them. We heating bottle in video just to remove the ridges and irregularities on it.
Gently heating do not modify the quality of plastic, just flatterns the bottle iregularity( for exemple you can making round bottle from any square bottle just by heating it, as all the bottles are made from round billet. Take a look on this nice video: https://youtu.be/ZfyPCujUPms… )
For common flat-surface bottles you don’t have to heat them, and you can cut them at any temperature (device was tested on bottle cooled to +5 celsius).
The bottle must remain closed during the heating so hot air inside "blows" bottle to its billet state, but pay attention, do not overheat it or approach the bottle close to heat source, in theory may cause damage to bottle or the bottle owner.
If you back plastic bottle cutter in first weeks of march - we are planning the delivery in July.
Unfortunately a big amount of orders do not allow us to deliver it earlier.
Sure, we will try to do our best upgrading our machines to produce more and faster, but to be sure - back in march and you can work with it in July.
If you in need of plastic bottle cutter, but you cannot offer to pledge it on KickStarter - please send us e-mail to email@example.com with subject: CHARITY

What is your plans for using of plastic bottle cutter?
How much cutters do you need?
Your delivery address:
After the campaign end(23 april) we will try to find the solution for you.
Let me say say from all of us - we all are deeply interested to help you to upcycle more plastic waste.
So don't hesitate contact us if you cannot pledge for one, after the campaign end we will try to help you.
This is Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless and/or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.
Brenda Goi has given a nice answer to this question:
Some people are saying "but it's still plastic, it's not good for the environment" blablabla Where do you want it to go exactly? It's already been done. Plastic bottle EXISTS NOW and we can't stop that completely so might as well think smart and accept it instead of just throwing it away. This is a good way to reuse plastic bottles besides making it into a flower pot or pencil holder. Do YOU have any bright ideas?
Please contact us on this email: firstname.lastname@example.org with subject BIG ORDER. We will proceed your request after the end of KickStarter campaign (23 april).
