About this project
Thanks to everyone who supported our Kickstarter! This campaign is now closed. To order a copy of March of the Ants and Minions of the Meadow, or other Weird City Games merchandise, go to weirdcitygames.com/shop.
Two years ago, with the support of over 1,600 backers, March of the Ants was brought to life. One year later the ants marched across table tops around the globe. It was met with enthusiastic praise, and we sold out of our original print run in eight months. Now, Weird City Games is back on Kickstarter with Minions of the Meadow, our first major expansion to March of the Ants.
March of the Ants sets up in five minutes, and plays in a little over an hour, but provides a rich world building and 4X experience in the vein of games like Eclipse and Twilight Imperium. Minions of the Meadow deepens this experience while preserving the things that made March of the Ants a success.
In March of the Ants, each player works to create a thriving ant colony, growing their nest economy and sending their ants forth into the meadow. Will your colony seek a path of symbiosis and peaceful coexistence, dedicate your colony's resources to evolving your species, or pursue aggressive expansion, challenging other ants for territory? March of the Ants is a quick-playing, dynamic, open ended game that offers complex decision-making and multiple paths to victory.
In Minions of the Meadow colonies gain powerful new tools to aid in their expansion and conquest. Major Workers enhance your abilities to explore and battle while Aphid Farms grant majestic rewards. Parasitic Evolutions thwart your opponents' best laid plans while Tactics create a deeper level of plotting and scheming during combat. Beware fearsome new Predators as they are drawn to the most successful colonies in the meadow.
- Major Workers - Each Colony can breed Major Workers, larger ants who evolve with your colony. Use their powers to scout the best territory or lead your armies to war.
- Aphids - Send your ants to find aphids and form a symbiotic relationship. Herd them to new hexes where they will have more space to grow and provide greater harvests.
- Tactics - Play Tactics like Feint, Ferocious Expansion and Savage Cannibals to catch your opponent by surprise and turn the tide of battle.
- Parasitic Evolutions - Infect your opponent's ants and override their most powerful evolutions.
- Predators - Summon the Centipede Broodmother and the Trapdoor Spider, terrible beasts who stalk the meadow.
Into The Lair - Venture forth to hunt for the Centipede Broodmother in the new solo and co-op game.
(Minions of the Meadow is an expansion and a copy of the base game is required to play.)
Play March of the Ants now, on Tabletopia!
The amazing folks at Tabletopia have created a digital version of the base game of March of the Ants for us. Tabletopia is an great online tabletop simulator. Weird City Games used Tabletopia extensively to playtest Minions of the Meadow with our design team members in Los Angeles, Portland and even Borneo! To try it out, follow this link: March of the Ants Tabletopia
Minions of the Meadow is already a great addition to the base game; we are confident it can become even better if you help us spread the word, rally the board gaming community, and exceed our basic funding goal.
The social goals are achieved, but you can still help spread the colony:
*What do we mean by Kickstarter Exclusive? We mean that it will not be available in the Retail Version of the game, but will be included in the Kickstarter version. Weird City Games reserves the right to use these exclusives as promotional materials or distribute them separately.
Ants herd, protect and milk aphids for honeydew. In Minions of the Meadow players discover aphids by exploring new aphid starting hexes or by playing cards.
Herding: Ants immediately start herding any unattended aphids if they are in the same collection site. When ants move, they will bring along any aphids they are herding.
Farming: During Harvest, players that are herding aphids in a hex collect bonus resources based on the total number of aphids in that hex.
Breeding: At the beginning of slumber, if one or more aphids is in a hex, they breed, adding one additional aphid to that hex. Split your herd up early to grow your population or keep them together to gain bonuses.
(Aphids can reproduce parthogenically, all by themselves!)
Devouring: Sometimes an ant can’t wait, sometimes they are hungry. Use two steps during a March action to devour an aphid and draw a card.
Each colony has access to two special ants, known as Major Workers. These oversized ants start with just one power, the ability to Rally other ants directly from the larvae chamber to aid them in battle, but as you evolve your ant species they become more powerful!
Push: Your Major Workers may push smaller ants off of collection sites and into adjacent tunnels when they March.
Scout: Your Major Workers can Scout when they are included in exploring parties, revealing one additional hex.
Populate: When you Forage, you may immediately place one larva from your larvae chamber into each hex where you have a Major Worker.
Play parasitic cards on your opponents, to block bonuses they get from other Evolutions and Colony Goals. Not only will the Host (your opponent) suffer a negative effect, you will benefit from their hard work!
Tactics are a new sub-type of card. Tactics are played face down during battle as the player’s Ferocity card, but instead of just adding Ferocity, they also have an immediate special effect.
There are Tactics of each card type: Event, Evolution and Colony Goal. If you win the battle, Evolution and Colony Goal Tactics you get to play the card immediately. Event Tactics grant a one-time bonus, sometimes even if you lose!
New Solo and Co-op Rules: Into the Lair
In the March of the Ants solo/co-op game, the ants repelled an invasion of the centipedes. In "Into the Lair," the ants scout the centipede’s territory in an effort to destroy the Centipede Broodmother before a new threat emerges.
As the ants venture to the frontier of the centipede’s lands they encounter centipede young which obstruct collection sites, rapidly grow into adults, and motivate the centipedes to battle ever more fiercely. When the Nest of Centipedes is finally discovered, an epic battle must be waged against the Broodmother.

March of the Ants and Minions of the Meadow will be manufactured in China and freight shipped from there to various distribution points around the globe. Our fulfillment partners will then ship the game from those locations directly to backers. We have worked hard to create the most cost effective shipping method to save all of you wonderful backers money on shipping costs and taxes. Rewards will ship from fulfillment centers inside the USA, EU and Canada, and directly from China to all other countries.
All pledge levels will ship to backers in the USA at no additional shipping cost. Shipping for backers in all other countries has been discounted proportionately. We realize that shipping can be a great barrier for those living outside the USA and we have done what we can to reduce that cost. Backers at any level can order one additional pledge at that level with no extra shipping by adding the cost of the additional pledge.
We have an estimated delivery date of March 2017, though we will be working diligently to get the game to all backers as quickly as possible and hope the game will arrive early in 2017.
This project would not be possible without all of you, our wonderful backers. We seek to honor your vital contribution with our solemn promise that backer copies of March of the Ants:Minions of the Meadow will be shipped out before March of the Ants: Minions of the Meadow is available for purchase from retailers or at conventions. You know what they say: the first ant to the picnic gets the game...or something like that.
One of our favorite things about Kickstarter is that it really creates a community. We pledge to involve all of our backers in the creation of this project in as many and as meaningful ways as possible. This may include helping design a new Predator, giving input on new evolution cards, suggesting new components, variants, rules editing, thematic advice, etc. We love your input and will do our best to incorporate as many of your ideas as we can.
Further, we pledge to keep you informed at every step along the way as our Kickstarter campaign unfolds. This is a community-funded project and as such it is your right to be fully informed of the progress we make on the journey from funding to delivery. We value each and every one of you and will insure that you are fully satisfied with this project. Please feel free to contact us with any concerns, questions or ideas. Let's build this colony together!
The original Kickstarter for March of the Ants was our first serious foray into game design and game publication. It was a wild and exhilarating ride and was successful due to support from so many wonderful backers. Having our game published and sharing it with thousands of people has been a very gratifying and humbling experience. It is an honor to have our game played, discussed and loved by so many people. Thank you for supporting our dream of making games and for giving us a reason to make them.

Risks and challenges
One year ago we concluded shipping of March of the Ants to all of our backers. Our backers were enthusiastic about our communication, customer service and the quality of the final product. Through the process of manufacturing, freight shipping and fulfillment we learned a great deal and were able to deliver a fantastic product in a timely manner. Each project faces unique challenges but we are confident we can work through anything that arises and we are dedicated to delivering an amazing game.
For the second printing and expansion of March of the Ants we have found a new manufacturing partner. Although we were happy with the final quality of the first print of the base game, we had several issues regarding our previous manufacturer's communication and willingness to work with us to make the game exactly what we wanted it to be.
Our new manufacturer comes very highly recommended and we have spoken with them extensively to ensure that they will be able to replicate the quality and feel of the base game components. We are excited that they can help us offer a better final product, with a quicker production time, allowing us to get the game to backers as quickly as possible.
Providing a good product is not only about making a great game; it is delivering it to our backers in the best, most cost-effective manner possible. We have been researching new shipping options since our last campaign finished. We are working with established shipping and distribution companies to insure that March of the Ants and Minions of the Meadow will reach all customers as quickly and efficiently as possible.
We have been testing and tweaking March of the Ants: Minions of the Meadow for over a year. It has gone through a great many revisions and we are very confident in and happy with the final product. We have created a great expansion that builds on the original game, adding depth without distracting from the elegant gameplay. Many thanks to playtesters at local game stores and conventions and to our Weird Citizens who have blind playtested the game and have responded with enthusiastic praise!
We brought on a new artist, Jason Reynolds, to work with us on this game. Jason is adding his fantastic linework and Ryan uses digital collage to bring the images to life with vibrant color. They have designed all of the art for the game, it is 95% done and will be complete by the end of our Kickstarter campaign. We are passionate about the art and the way it enhances the design and immersive theme of the game.
We have wanted to make this expansion since the original March of the Ants Kickstarter ended. We are confident that we can deliver a great project and are excited to learn from and work through any difficulties that may arise. Thank you for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
