March of the Ants: Empires of the Earth
Expands the world of March of the Ants! Mutations and Nest Chambers add more depth to this 1-5 player 4X colony building game!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sat, April 27 2019 12:00 AM UTC +00:00.
March of the Ants sets up in five minutes, plays in a little over an hour, yet provides a rich world building and 4X experience in the vein of games like Eclipse and Twilight Imperium. Empires of the Earth deepens this experience while preserving everything that made March of the Ants a success. Whether you are a veteran of the Meadow, or new to the game, this campaign has something for everyone!
March of the Ants, first launched in 2014, was brought to life with the help of over 1,600 enthusiastic backers. Minions of the Meadow expanded the game significantly in 2017. Now we are back with our third installment, Empires of the Earth. Join us as we venture even deeper into the realm of the ants!
In March of the Ants, each player works to create a thriving ant colony, growing their nest economy and sending their ants forth into the meadow. Will your colony seek a path of symbiosis and peaceful coexistence, dedicate your colony's resources to evolving your species, or pursue aggressive expansion while challenging other ants for territory? March of the Ants is a quick-playing, dynamic, open-ended game that offers complex decision making and multiple paths to victory.
Empires of the Earth introduces two new mechanics and card types as well as 18 new game bending Ant cards, brought to life by some of the best board game artists in the world!
- Sculpt a Darwinian Edge: In Empires of the Earth, players draft Mutations to jump-start their colonies with asymmetric abilities. These Mutations let players craft their strategies from the start of the game and kick the game into high gear from the very first turn.
- Build Your Nest: Expand your underground empire with Nest Chambers, a brand new card type that lets you use your nest inhabitants to unlock powerful, recurring abilities.
- More of Everything! Empires of the Earth includes 18 new Evolutions, Events and Colony Goals that will let you diversify your strategy and grow your colony in exciting new ways. Maintain a delicate balance with the Peacekeeper head, or spread poisoned spores with Cult of the Gray Queen.
- A Rich and Diverse Colony: To celebrate the world of March of the Ants, we reached out to our favorite artists from around the globe. This new expansion to March of the Ants features art from Vincent Dutrait, Mr. Cuddington, the Mico, and more!
(Empires of the Earth is an expansion; a copy of the base game is required to play.)

Play March of the Ants on Tabletopia!
The amazing folks at Tabletopia have created a digital version of the base game of March of the Ants for us. If you haven't had a chance to play the base game, check it out online. Tabletopia is a great online tabletop simulator. Weird City Games used Tabletopia extensively to playtest Minions of the Meadow with our design team members in Los Angeles, Portland and even Borneo! Empires of the Earth introduces two brand new card types and 18 new game bending Ant cards, brought to life by some of our favorite boardgame artists in the world!
Sculpt a Darwinian Edge: Each player will draft Mutations at the start of the game and choose two to keep, adding them directly to their ant body. These Mutations give your Colony powerful abilities to focus your strategy, but they are different from Evolutions in several key ways.
Each Mutation can help guide your Colony by enhancing specific actions, promoting aggression or cooperation and modifying your economy by giving alternate uses and conversion for resources. Mutations are designed to boost your colony at the start and then be Evolved over as they do not grant Caste bonuses or count toward completed ant bodies.
Expand your Underground Empire: Nest Chambers are a brand new card type that allow you to use your nest inhabitants to unlock powerful, recurring abilities.
Nest Chambers are shuffled into the Ant deck and played as a standard card. When you play a Nest Chamber any ants or larvae used to pay for the cost are converted to Eggs which are placed directly onto the Nest Chamber and help power up its recurring ability.
- As a Reaction, you may add an Egg to a Nest Chamber. Once full, the Nest Chamber can be activated to unleash a powerful ability.
- Nest Chambers stay in play for the entire game, allowing you to build a strategy around their recurring abilities.
18 New Ant Cards: The expansion is packed with new Evolutions, Events and Colony Goals that were designed to bring new strategies, opportunities and paths to victory. Will you ally with the Centipedes, found the Cult of the Gray Queen, or dedicate your colony to far-reaching exploration?

The cost of shipping will be charged after the campaign has ended. In the pledge manager, which will go out after the campaign finishes, you will be asked to fill out a backer survey and shipping will be charged at that time.
Below are the estimated shipping costs. We have incorporated a portion of the shipping costs into all pledges. (We do not expect prices to vary greatly, but those listed are estimates only and may fluctuate by slightly.)
*VAT for Empires of the Earth pledges* The Game will be manufactured in China. Backers of the Empires of the Earth pledge level, living outside the USA will have the game shipped directly to them from our fulfillment center in China. The cost of the game + shipping will be $18 and should avoid VAT charges in most countries.
*VAT for March of the Ants and Minions of the Meadow pledges* All copies of these games are currently at our warehouse in the USA and will be freight shipped to the Europe and Canada along with copies of Empires of the Earth and distributed to backers by fulfillment companies within those countries, so all import taxes will be paid by us. There are potential large scale changes regarding the UK and the EU. While we are unable to predict what effect this will have on shipping, we will work diligently to ensure the best prices for our backers.
We realize that shipping can be a great barrier for those living outside the USA and we have done what we can to reduce that cost. Unfortunately, the cost to ship to all other international locations from our fulfillment center in the USA is very high. We apologize for any difficulty this creates.
We have an estimated delivery date of December 2019, and we will be working diligently to get the game to all backers as early as possible.
We apologize that we DO NOT SHIP to: Afghanistan, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Burma, North Korea, Sudan.
This project would not be possible without all of you, our wonderful backers. We seek to honor your vital contribution with our solemn promise that backer copies of March of the Ants: Empires of the Earth will be shipped out before March of the Ants: Empires of the Earth is available for purchase from retailers or at conventions. You know what they say: the first ant to the picnic gets the game...or something like that.
One of our favorite things about Kickstarter is that it can build and sustain community. We pledge to involve all of our backers in the creation of this project in as many meaningful ways as possible. This may include helping design new ant Evolutions, suggesting new components, variants, rules editing, thematic advice, and more. We love your input and will do our best to incorporate as many of your ideas as we can.
Further, we pledge to keep you informed at every step along the way as our Kickstarter campaign unfolds. We value each of you and will insure that you are fully satisfied with this project. Please feel free to contact us with any concerns, questions or ideas. Let's build this colony together!
Risks and challenges
Four years ago we shipped March of the Ants to all of our backers. Our backers were enthusiastic about our communication, customer service and the quality of the final product. Through the process of manufacturing, freight shipping and fulfillment, we learned a great deal and were able to deliver a fantastic product in a timely manner. Each project faces unique challenges, and we are confident we can work through anything that arises and we are dedicated to delivering an amazing game.
For the printing of the Empires of the Earth expansion, we have found a new manufacturing partner. Although we were happy with the final quality of the first print of the base game and the first expansion, we had several issues regarding our previous manufacturer's communication and willingness to work with us to make the game exactly what we wanted it to be.
Our new manufacturer comes very highly recommended. We have spoken with them extensively to ensure they will replicate the quality and feel of the base game components. They can help us offer a better final product, with quicker production time, allowing us to get the game to backers as soon as possible.
Providing a good product is not only about making a great game; it is delivering it to our backers in the best, most cost-effective manner possible. We are working with established shipping and distribution companies to ensure that Empires of the Earth and March of the Ants and Minions of the Meadow will reach all customers as quickly and efficiently as possible.
We have been testing and tweaking March of the Ants: Empires of the Earth for the last year. We are happy with the final product: A great new expansion that builds on the original game and first expansion, adding depth without distracting from the elegant gameplay. Many thanks to playtesters at local game stores and conventions and to our Weird Citizens!
We brought on a host of guest artists, to work with us on this game. Each of them has added their own fantastic take on the March of the Ants universe. We are passionate about the art and the way it enhances the design and immersive theme of the game.
