About this project
The short story:
The Bright Wings gang is planning to record again this October and we're asking (along with our super-hero friends) for your help. We need to raise $5000 to make the album. We anticipate a total budget of $7500 to cover the cost of our sound engineer, venue rental, royalties for the songs, travel, and recording fees for the singers. We've got some tasty rewards for you to think about: all of them come with a heaping dose of our gratitude.

The longer story:
Recording Here Below last August was an incredible experience: we spent four days singing and laughing and eating and drinking wine and singing some more. Colin McCaffrey came and set up his gear in The Old Meeting House in Montpelier, an incredible old church on a dirt road outside of a beautiful town. Recording there— all singing into one mike, no overdubs, no fixes—felt like the best way to capture the spirit of the songs, retaining the warmth and vitality of this kind of music. Even though we did have to do some retakes when a tractor drove by outside...
Watching our songs move out into the world has been both moving and humbling. We've heard from people in the U.K. and New Zealand and the U.S. and more, people who have found comfort in these songs in difficult times or who have just found joy in the harmonies. It's an honor to have our voices be a part of your lives: thank you.
So, we want to do the it again—same church, same recording engineer, same singers. But we're going to spread out musically. The first album focused on Brendan's original shape note songs. Our second album will start with shape note songs from other contemporary composers including Bright Wingers Adam and Mason. Then we'll move on to a new batch of Brendan's songs that move outside of the shape note vibe to bring in modern poetry and a broader pallet of musical ideas. Basically, more love and less death.
You can see one of the songs, a reworking of a traditional ballad, here. This is from a performance at the Ira Allen Chapel in Burlington last February.
It cost $4000 to make Here Below. And that was pretty bare bones—our mixing costs were super low because we were able to sing through everything without messing up much and none of the singers got paid.
Your support for the new album will give us the foundation we need to take risks as we try out these new songs. This time around, we'd like to provide recording fees for the singers to cover travel and time off from work. We'll also use the money to cover the cost of our sound engineer, Colin McCaffrey; renting the church; design and mixing; and pressing the album. Oh, and eating during those four days of singing. $5000 won't cover all of the cost, but it will make it possible.
Thanks for the support.
