About this project
American Wristwatches, The Art Deco Series. It doesn't sound very exciting I suppose when you first read the words in the title but the more you read the more I think you'll understand how fantastic a project it can be. Three books that will expose the history of American wristwatches, and the world. Formatted in such a way that is beautiful, entertaining, informative and easy to digest for virtually any reader. A simple story about the tiny gears and levers that kept the world moving through amazing achievements in not only design and culture but also through a time of great hardships and unimaginable tragedies. During the Art Deco period world governments were created and fell. Scientific breakthroughs that pale what we have recently experienced, like the advent of atomic/nuclear power, changed the world both for the good and bad of humanity. Sports were played, people explored and heroes were made legendary. Inventors made the world we now take for granted and religious leaders changed our view of that world. All the while wristwatch companies in the United States and around the world created giant factories and employed thousands of people to manufacture what the world needed most...a simple way to keep it all moving on time.
Book one of this project, the first step to its realization, has already been finished. I personally spent the better part of a year of my life and most of my savings to design, produce and print, "Hamilton, The Art Deco Period" and now I am coming to you to help me finish the story. I am asking for you to share my vision for this collection and to help me finish books two and three so that future generations won't miss out on these amazing watches and will learn about the world that was. There have been a many books about vintage wristwatches, though few about those made in America, and none that asked the question, who were the people that wore them and what was the world like for them. I hope to answer those questions with these books and with your help. The money raised here will go directly to the production and printing of book two, "Illinois, The Art Deco Period", and any money above and beyond the requested amount will go to advertising of the series and for the printing and production of book three, "American Wristwatches, The Art Deco Period".
Book two, which is now starting production, is going to look a little something like the below images. Though these are just mockups and some things may change as the book develops. Unlike book one which has the history running through each page, book two will have the history written on separate pages that will be meant to mimic vintage news stories from the period. Please, keep in mind these are only mock-ups and not final pages. Also, book two will be printed with the watches shown on a black background with metallic silver accents and will sport a white cover. This should give it a unique feel while still feel good sitting next to book one, which was obviously shot with the watches on a white background with metallic gold accents, and three which will be a combination of the two with metallic rose-gold or brass accents (I just haven't decided yet :).
The oddly shaped white spots on the pages are for placement of what will show optional available dial styles for each watch...a request I have gotten from many collectors since they saw book one.
Risks and challenges
I found that the biggest obstacle to creating book one was finding the watches themselves. I asked around on different websites and at vintage watch shows, but I imagine people say they want to publish books all the time and never do and no one wants to get involved in a project that may only be a dream. However, since the printing of book one, "Hamilton, The Art Deco Period", I have been contacted by many who want to share their personal collections and stories with me for both books two and three as well as any other books that may come from this series. So many in fact that I may have to turn some down. The creation of these books is now not as much an issue of how but when. As the designer I know their creation is at hand. I am a running staring at the finish line and the only thing slowing me down is the funding. These books will happen, even if I have to spend the rest of my life saving up my own money to have them produced, printed and advertised for. With your help I won't have to wait that long.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
