Transporting the audience deep into the exciting world of gay rugby, IN FROM THE SIDE will have the distinct high-quality gloss of the best of independent cinema. Reflecting a modern, forward-thinking LGBT universe, the film is both a deeply personal look at modern gay relationships and a universal story of a doomed love affair.
WHERE WE ARE:
We already have a fully vetted script and are in possession of some of the best production equipment the cinema world has to offer – in addition to owning an Arri Alexa, the industry's main camera of choice (MOONLIGHT, BLADE RUNNER 2049) we are also in possession of lighting, rigging and sound equipment that allows the film to be made on a very modest budget without compromising production quality. We have also already secured access to a large number of the critical locations.
DIRECTOR/WRITER: Matt Carter already has a widely distributed feature film under his belt and has been working in the world of visual effects and post-production for over 10 years now. He is also an experienced musician, composing the orchestral score to his last film and will be doing the same for 'In From The Side'.
WRITER/PRODUCER: Adam Silver has been working in the film industry for over fifteen years and within the LGBT industry for over a decade. In that time he has acquired over one hundred titles, each with a view to maximising the audience and reach for those gay stories.
IN FROM THE SIDE is the story of an adulterous affair between two members of a fictional gay rugby club. The film explores the multiple types of connections that can occur within a large group of gay men in a seemingly hyper-masculine and aggressive team sports environment, illuminating the very real emotional tensions and pressures this can create. The story centres on Mark, a relatively new and inexperienced club member in a dysfunctional relationship with his disinterested partner, and his adulterous romantic involvement with the more seasoned Rugby player, Warren. Warren, however, is also a taken man, having a long-standing but strained relationship with his partner and fellow teammate John. Following a drunken encounter, Mark and Warren unwittingly embark on a 6-month affair that they struggle to keep concealed from their partners and teammates. As this dangerous game begins to unravel, their uncovered infidelity has far-reaching consequences, creating deep divisions and fractures within the club. Team spirit, loyalties, camaraderie and the support the players have for one-another both on and off the pitch are tested against the darker and more competitive undertones, backstabbing and betrayal rife in this environment.
WHAT WE NEED:
Let’s be honest, as much as we wish they weren’t so, films simply aren’t made on passion alone. Although we already have so many key elements already in place and are twenty steps ahead of similar films in this stage of pre-production, like any movie, it’s the stuff you don’t think about eats away so much of the budget. Speaking of eating, actors and crew need to be fed, there’s travel expenses, costumes and props etc. Whilst many people kindly offer to volunteer their time, there are essential highly skilled crew positions funds are critical for- and those have a big impact on the quality of the film. Every dollar counts, and goes to the essentials in helping make this the best possible film it can be!
Risks and challenges
Making a film is always a big risk, there is lots of that can be delayed or stalled. We have a production schedule in place and we aim to begin shooting as soon as possible, carrying out the film's post-production and editing promptly as soon as we wrap, but of course, there is always a possibility that our schedule can slip. This is part and parcel of any film production, even in Hollywood.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
