Thomas (this is Jeremy "speaking") does black anodizing all the time in his business (TroupSystems.com). It's a pretty, uniform color, not as strong as QPQ but FAR cheaper than QPQ. The problem is it's for aluminum or titanium and will NOT work on stainless steel. Instead we are looking at replacing QPQ with the Black Oxide process which will work on stainless. Black Oxide is strong like QPQ (Dewalt has a line of Black Oxide drill bits). We are hoping Black Oxide will give us the results we want, improve quality and lower costs.
We think the problems we are having with QPQ is caused by residual oil on the Critter Cutters left from the manufacturing process but we aren't sure. This is the first time anyone has ever been silly enough to put an industrial case-hardening coating like this on a bottle opener, and we had some unexpected problems.
The rainbow ones looked so good we "went out on a limb" and did a huge batch to bring the cost down. I haven't heard from the factory on the status of the rainbow coatings we'll contact them Monday for an answer. As soon as the rainbow ones come in we'll ship them and that will include the reward for one of each.
Thanks for the update! Any news on the Rainbow ones?

So the QPQ ones are now the Limited Edition? I can see the "Limited Edition" Rainbow Blue version has a place on the website's store. Have they now swapped status with this update or was there not enough of the blues ordered to do a batch without increasing the quantity to minimum?
have you tried Black Anodizing?
Yeah I was slightly disappointed as well with the coating. It picks up dirt VERY easy. Overall still a very nice piece.
My black is an ugly grey. So expensive! Such a waste. :(
