About

 The Background

I began working on this project about two years ago, and what started as a small photo series for my undergraduate thesis, has become this book.

Over the course of a year, I traveled across America and documented a total of 54 sites where people of color were killed at hands of law enforcement officers. Simultaneously I began collecting stories about encounters with police officers. These efforts have come together to make the book, No Officers Were Injured in This Incident. I've displayed a previous version of this book a few times in gallery shows entitled, where it happened. It is now my goal to print and distribute this book, so its message can reach a wider group of people. The audience of a book is limitless; it can be viewed in a group, read allowed, and passed on to others.

The Book and The Message

The book No Officers Were Injured in This Incident includes all 54 photographs of the documented sites. Next to each image is a ledger listing the name of the victim, the location, and the date and time of the incident. Also in the book are narratives about encounters with law enforcement and racial prejudice. These photographs and stories give a small insight into the everyday encounters between law enforcement and of people of color in America.According to The Guardian, last year (2016) 1,093 people were killed by police officers in the United States. That is an average of 3 people a day. The incidents detailed in this archive span 50 years, from 1965 to 2015. This book documents only 54 of the tens of thousands of deaths that have happened over those 50 years.

To learn more about the project that led to this book, please visit my original project's hatchfund, or check out this interview I did with Nashville Public Radio.

I hope that you buy this book and use it to have a conversation and take action to end police brutality and institutionalized racism.

The Money

The money you give will be for printing and distribution. Any profits from the sale of this book will be donated to: ACLU; Black Lives Matter; Million Hoodies Movement for Justice; NAACP: Legal Defense and Educational Fund

Risks and challenges

The book is finished! This Kickstarter is a way to "pre-order" your book at a reduced price, and help me gauge how many books I will be able to sell in the future. The goal amount is what is needed to guarantee the printing and shipping of 100 books. Please share this project with anyone you think might be interested. If the project is fully funded, I'll do my best to have everything produced and shipped by the end of the year!
