The Final Report of Henry Barrow
A supernatural thriller about the monsters we might become when we fight monsters.
The Final Report of Henry Barrow
A supernatural thriller about the monsters we might become when we fight monsters.
Based on an H.P. Lovecraft-inspired tabletop RPG scenario by Bret Kramer, Adam Scott Glancy wrote this script about two U.S. government agents who are part of a black ops agency that fights the supernatural without exposing cosmic horrors to innocent people. Their mission is to "sanitize" former agent Henry Barrow's home--ensure he didn't keep any occult paraphernalia nor anything that could expose the agency. But poor Henry, victim of a mental breakdown, did a bad thing. A very bad thing. Now Agent Grimes and Agent Winifred have to clean up his mess. Will they survive with their humanity and sanity intact?
For fans of H.P. Lovecraft, cosmic horror, The X-Files, Project Blue Book, the SCP Foundation, Men in Black, Supernatural, Annihilation, the role-playing games Call of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu, or Chill, The Black Watchmen, The Laundry Files, and all other instances of official organizations combating the Unnatural, we would like to present to you--with your generous assistance--The Final Report of Henry Barrow.
Herbert Jefferson, Jr. as "Agent Grimes"
Most famously known for playing Lieutenant Boomer in the original television series Battlestar Galactica, Herbert Jefferson, Jr. is a veteran actor of both stage and screen. He graduated with honors from New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1969 and studied at both the HB Studio and the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg. He recently played "Admiral Satterlee" in the successfully crowdfunded series Star Trek: Renegades. He has committed to The Final Report, and we cannot wait to witness the talent and experience he will bring to the character of Grimes.
Brenda Gutierrez as "Agent Winifred"
Brenda Gutierrez trained with The Groundlings, the Actors Comedy Studio, Killians' Workshop, and takes Don Bloomfield's Meisner technique master class. In addition to her commercial and film work, she played "Margarita Martinez Garcia", a bereaved mother at a seancé in the critically-acclaimed, award-winning immersive play One Last Thing Before You Go, directed by Aaron Vanek. As part of Brenda's background research on Agent Winifred, she has been playing related tabletop RPGs as her character.

Aaron Vanek, director, co-producer
The Final Report of Henry Barrow marks the return to Lovecraft-themed cinema from one of the first "Lurkers". His student short film, The Outsider, helped catalyze the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® in Portland, Oregon, now in its 24th year. He continued the Lovecraftian movie tradition with My Necronomicon, Return to Innsmouth, The Yellow Sign (based on the story by R.W. Chambers from The King In Yellow, and starring Shawna Waldron), and Call of Tutu (watch here). He also founded and ran, with a lot of help, the San Pedro branch of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® from 2010 through 2016. In 2005 Vanek received the prestigious "Howie" award from the HPLFF for his contributions to Lovecraft cinema. He earned a degree in Creative Writing from UCLA and an MFA in Cinema Directing from Columbia College Chicago with his thesis Morning Commute, based on Steve Jackson Games Car Wars (watch here).
The below video demonstrates why Aaron wants to remain behind the camera. He talks about the movie and shows off some of his curiosities:
Ken Lobb, director of photography, co-producer
Besides co-producing The Yellow Sign with Aaron Vanek and co-writing numerous, award-winning scripts such as "The Colour Out of Space" together, Ken Lobb has also [REDACTED - INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE]
Adam Scott Glancy, screenwriter
Scott Glancy is one of the authors Delta Green, an award-winning series of books for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. Delta Green is essentially a shotgun marriage between the black ops of the espionage genre and the black arts of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Twenty years later, Scott remains a contributing author on the newly revised and even more award-winning stand-alone Delta Green RPG published by Arc Dream Publishing. His short fiction has appeared in Book of Cthulhu II, Shotguns v. Cthulhu, and Swords v. Cthulhu, as well as Dark Discoveries Magazine. If you let him, he will talk history until your ears bleed.
Glancy talks about his script:
Bret Kramer, story
Bret Kramer is a writer reluctantly living in the Midwest but whose heart remains in New England (until someone finds where be hid it). He is the editor of Sentinel Hill Press which publishes the Arkham Gazette, a magazine for the Call of Cthulhu RPG. In his free time he is mildly confused how he suddenly had free time. Back him on Patreon to secure for his children the world’s largest private collection of books about graveyards.
Pete Von Sholly, storyboards
Our storyboards will be drawn by legendary artist Pete von Sholly, whose film credits include The Mist, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Blob (1988), Darkman, Mars Attacks!, and many more. His website is here.
Dave Snyder, creature effects
Dave has a long background of monster making in the industry (Star Trek, The Walking Dead) as well as on fellow H.P. Lovecraft cinema such as "The Whisperer in Darkness" by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and Huan Vu's The Dreamlands. We want to show you his twisted concept art, but that would lessen your Sanity check!
The film is to be shot with the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K using the Meike range of cine lenses in a 2.39:1 widescreen (Techniscope) aspect ratio. Supporting the camera are the DJI Ronin S gimbal, the DJI Mavic Air drone and the DJI Pocket Osmo.
The Final Report of Henry Barrow will be released for free, publicly, online, as well as submitted to film festivals. Donors of this project at $15 and higher will be able to see it first for at least a month before the public via a password-protect Vimeo link.
There are a few reasons for our distribution:
- SAG-AFTRA union rules for a short project only allow for these modes of distribution. Any form of commercial exploitation requires subsequent negotiations with the actors for residuals.
- We want as many people to see this picture as possible, without a paywall between us.
- We hope this will be a proof-of-concept for a subsequent series, and generating as many fans as possible will help.
Your donation helps us make the movie so everyone can see it. We have other rewards that will not be available to the public for donors only.
Habrá una versión en inglés y subtitulada en español de la película.
Rating and Run Time
Without submitting this to the MPAA, we expect the movie would receive an "R" rating for strong language; brief, intense violence; adult situations, and themes of dark, foreboding, pervasive cosmic horror.
The script is 26 pages, and we expect a running time of about 30 minutes.
The pie chart below shows the percentages of the total budget. As a SAG signatory short film, our cast costs, even for two actors, are much higher than actors working for copy, credit, and meals. We are also paying our small crew. Coupled with insurance, SAG pension and health fees, state and federal taxes for employees, payroll fees, food, props, wardrobe, an amazing effect (* spoiler below), the cost of mastering and duplicating the Vanek compilation DVDs, poster printing, Kickstarter fees, etc., our costs for this project are relatively normal for similar productions, but are high compared to a movie with a free cast and crew. Our Kickstarter goal represents the money we need to get the movie "in the can", or shot. It does not represent our pre and post production costs, e.g., writer, director, producer fees, sound design, music, effects, etc. That will be our first stretch goal.
Many people are saying this is a high "ask" for a short film. We realize that. Nevertheless, we are pressing forward because a) this concept and script is awesome, b) the cast is stellar and deserves respectable pay, c) we want to use real effects and not CGI, d) we are honoring union and labor rules and getting insurance (not cheap for a single production). Also included in the budget are the Kickstarter reward costs, especially the DVD.
We hope that you want to see this movie made as much as we do. This may be the only chance to do so.

Vanek Compilation DVD
For the first time, most of Aaron Vanek's H.P. Lovecraft-adaptations and inspired movies are collected in a new, remastered DVD format mastered by Brian Callahan, co-director of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® and co-founder of SighCo. Included in this collection:
- The Outsider - one of two short films to play at the first HPLFF, an adaptation of the story by H.P. Lovecraft.
- My Necronomicon - a short effects-laden movie about an accursed book
- Return to Innsmouth - this adaptation and continuation of Lovecraft's classic story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," was shot in Portland, Oregon, and features animation from legendary artist Richard Corben. First time on DVD!
- The Yellow Sign - Starring Shawna Waldron, this is an adaptation of the first RW Chambers story in the collection The King in Yellow. This was co-scripted by John Tynes.
Each movie will be lovingly restored and remastered, including some new effects on Return to Innsmouth. As many extra bonus materials as we can fit on the disk will also be included. No longer do you have to rewind the VHS!
Matthew Revert's amazing retro poster, seen at the top of the page, can be yours on 24 in. x 36 in. glossy paper. Donors at $200+ will have their poster customized: the bottom line will read "TOP SECRET [Name You Choose] EYES ONLY NOFORN". The customized versions are truly one of a kind!
We will print, and artist Pete Von Sholly will personally autograph the storyboards used in the movie. Not all scenes will be storyboarded.
Lovecraft Illustrated by Pete Von Sholly
Artist Pete Von Sholly will autograph your softcover (level 1) or hardcover (level 2) copies of his Lovecraft Illustrated art books.
Duplicated Props from the Movie
Four pages from an old occult book appear in the movie. These will be duplicated by their creator, Christian Matzke, for you. A limited number of these sets will be created. Start your own Necronomicon folio.
A sample page from the hands and mind of Matzke (not one in the movie):
You will be credited in the front credits (as opposed to end credits) as an associate producer, co-producer, or executive producer (with logo) as well as listed as such in our imdb listing depending on your donation level.

We will arrange, dependent on schedules, time to chat with either director/co-producer Aaron Vanek, director of photography/co-producer Ken Lob, screenwriter Adam Scott Glancy, or a combination, e.g., a few hours with one, a few hours with another. We can chat about movie making, writing, technical aspects of movies, role-playing games, including help on any of your similar projects--games, movies, etc. We can read your script, look at your cut, your outline, treatment, etc.
You are invited to all of our screenings--cast, crew, and especially festivals and conventions. For our highest donors, this also includes admission to the festival or convention (but not travel, lodging, or expenses).
You will be invited to the set to witness the production of the movie! We cannot provide travel, but will have lodging and meals for you. You will see where we "bury the bodies". There may be a thorough background check.

- Teaser video music: "You've Been Around" from Frownland's "Sad Eyed Lady of Frownland" copyright Miss El Monte / Lies & Fog Music ASCAP 2005-2016. All right reserved. Used with permission.
- The teaser video was shot at the same location as the final movie. It's the home and grounds of Mike Donahue, a friend of Vanek's, also a director, who will allow us near carte blanche to film at his house and desert acres. It is far from Los Angeles (Mojave Desert), which means travel and per diem for the cast, but it's worth it.
- The teaser uses the same camera package as the final movie (although perhaps a different LUT).
- Adam Scott Glancy, screenwriter of the The Final Report of Henry Barrow and the teaser, unofficially titled "Grave", also lent his voice as CONTROL in the teaser. He recorded it in the bathroom of his hotel room at GenCon. More info in this video.
- Glancy imagined a government agency that fights the supernatural, called CONTROL, for this movie. No such agency exists, of course. OF COURSE!
- The teaser shows the conclusion of the mission immediately preceding The Final Report of Henry Barrow for Agent Winifred.
- We thought about doing a separate campaign for the compilation DVD, but thought it would make for a better reward for this movie.
- For Vanek's pitch video, the background music is by Reber Clark, used with permission.
- We have a Facebook group for the movie here and here.
* PLOT SPOILER BELOW!
* DON'T LOOK IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING AHEAD OF TIME!
* WE WARNED YOU!
* Dave is working on a monster creature effect that is pretty effed up. Real, not CG.
Risks and challenges
Like all motion picture productions, our risks are the same: a "force majeure" incident halts production, actors cannot complete shooting, or constant adjustments delay post production. If we are funded, we are obligated to get into production: costs are already spent plus we are guaranteeing actor employment through the Screen Actors Guild union. We have designated our shoot dates already with Herbert, whose availability is limited--we have to shoot by October at the latest.
This is not the first motion picture from Vanek, Lobb, nor Vanek & Lobb. We have been down this road before, plus we are utilizing professionals in the industry for consultation and guidance to ensure the best possible production on a timely basis.
Lastly, Vanek has successfully run and fulfilled seven successful Kickstarter campaigns--five under his name and another two under the HPLFF-SoCal, LLC account. If funded, we will ensure all rewards are completely fulfilled, and you, the donor, are content.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
