What is this?
Seekers Unlimited is a cutting-edge educational program that uses an ancient art form--play pretend--to create a unique and thoroughly engaging classroom experience. It is an entertaining interactive aid to support teachers' units and addressed the California Content Standards. Our current test class is the sixth grade at Our Community School, a public charter school in Chatsworth, CA.
Our expert staff designs a dramatic narrative similar to the classic "Choose Your Own Adventure" books or modern video game RPGs. But instead of turning a page or clicking a mouse to make things happen, the students solve relevant educational problems to keep the story going. With the teacher overseeing the process, the students work together in differentiated groups to overcome the challenges presented to them and complete the game.
Our first campaign curriculum, entitled Star Seekers, is designed around a science fiction theme to promote math and science standards. As Seekers Unlimited grows, we'll be creating games with different genres and themes and expanding our program to all middle and high school levels.
Welcome to Star Seekers
Star Seekers is a live-action role-playing game set in the 22nd century. Participants (students) take the roles of starship crew members--with the class choosing the ship's name--who work together to accomplish shared goals.
Star Seekers is a cooperative LARP that's similar to a game, but instead of pushing a button, drawing a card, or rolling dice, the player-student solves a math or science problem. The immersive atmosphere aims at creating urgency and excitement among the players, as well as a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility.
After the first session of the game, the students wrote the following comments in their personal log books:
- "is a fun way of learning mixed with a fun theme"
- "it really helps to strengthen team work"
- "I actually did learn"
- "it was challenging, but that's what I liked about it"
- "I liked how everyone got a say in our decision"
- "The way everyone acts make it feel like we're in space."
More comments from the students themselves are in the comments section of the website here (scroll down).
Why we need your help
We are currently running Star Seekers out of our own pockets, and expenses are mounting. Besides the considerable amount of printing we do for each unique session, our costs include fabric, flash cards, reference materials, and office supplies.
Your donation will help us continue to make engaging lessons that help teach this class the California State 6th grade math and science standards.
If we receive more than the amount we're asking for, we hope to hire an artist to make special images for each scenario, and, ideally, to expand into more schools, different grades, and other subjects.
Please help us bring the fun of interactive gaming to education.
