Every Story Needs a Book...
A beautiful book is not simply a collectible art object; it's also an exploration. Mirror Mirrored: A Contemporary Artists' Edition of 25 Grimm's Tales brings technology and traditional book-making together to create a one-of-a-kind experience.
We're launching Gwarlingo Press (an offshoot of Michelle's art blog Gwarlingo)—a new publishing house that reimagines classic stories through the eyes of contemporary artists. Mirror Mirrored is our inaugural publication.
We've invited 27 established and emerging painters, mixed and new-media artists, and sculptors to respond to an eclectic assortment of Grimm's stories and to redefine these folktales for a diverse, 21st century audience.
Our artists will create paintings, drawings, sculptures, and video works (viewable through the wonders of technology), which we will curate into a gorgeous, full-color book showcasing both the artworks and the Grimms' tales that inspired them. (The stories are a tweaked version of Margaret Hunt's translation by trilingual former Kassel-resident, German Literature Masters program graduate Yumiko Blackwell.)
Our inclusive funding model puts artists first. We're sharing our profits with every artist involved in the book, so the more money we raise the more money each artist receives.
The Kickstarter campaign is the only way to purchase the hand-numbered, first-edition of Mirror Mirrored.
Why This Project Matters
Before psychiatrist Carl Jung developed archetypes and Disney popularized Snow White and Cinderella, Jacob and Wilhem Grimm collected and published folktales.
Many of us were introduced to these stories as children, but the Grimm's tales were always meant for grownups too. They remain powerful and relevant today because they continue to speak to us across generations and cultures.
Much like the Biblical stories reimagined by artists like Giotto and Caravaggio, these fairy tales are perfect for reinterpretation.
Mirror Mirrored is Grimm for grownups. Aided by the works created by our 27 artists, this unique, interactive art book will allow you to revisit these fairy tales with new wonder and knowledge.
We are all on our own hero's journey, and the artworks created for this special volume will inspire you to see both fairy tales, as well as your own personal story, with new eyes.
As Booker-shortlisted author Karen Joy Fowler (who will be writing the introduction to this special collection) said, "Without our listening, all the stories are the same story."
Mirror Mirrored will be surprising, funny, harrowing, whimsical, and inspiring. But we need you to make it happen.

Sponsor one of the 27 Mirror Mirrored artists and their Grimms' story, and we will include a dedication of your choice at the beginning of the artist's fairy tale. Each artist can only be sponsored once, and after an artist and story combination is claimed we will remove it from this list (so if you purchase this reward, please send us a message through the "contact me" button on the upper right section of this page to claim your artist because these dedications are first-come, first serve).
Please note that if an artist is marked "story forthcoming" below, their Grimms' tale selection will not be determined until after the close of the Kickstarter campaign—though you may still sponsor that particular artist now. Risks and challenges
Coordinating an ambitious project with 27 busy, professional artists is gratifying, but not without challenges. While all of our artists have committed to the project and our deadline, delays in submitting final artworks could complicate our production schedule and delay delivery of the final product. An artist's prior commitments might make it difficult to create a new artwork as originally planned or a complex performance piece could take longer to execute. Keeping 27 artists informed and on task is our greatest hurdle. But Michelle has worked closely with artists for almost 20 years and knows the ins and outs of creative project management. Even if, in a worst case scenario, one of our artists becomes unable to participate, we are confident we will find another talented creator to take the spot. And Corwin has experience designing books and catalogs, and regularly meets tight deadlines both as an artist and in his other career as an attorney. We have already dedicated 10 months of our time and energy to Mirror Mirrored, secured artist commitments, and have received a number of completed works—which proves we are tenacious individuals committed to making this project happen. We are confident we can overcome any reasonable challenges that might arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
