Every Story Needs a Book...

A beautiful book is not simply a collectible art object; it's also an exploration. Mirror Mirrored: A Contemporary Artists' Edition of 25 Grimm's Tales brings technology and traditional book-making together to create a one-of-a-kind experience.

We're launching Gwarlingo Press (an offshoot of Michelle's art blog Gwarlingo)—a new publishing house that reimagines classic stories through the eyes of contemporary artists. Mirror Mirrored is our inaugural publication.

We've invited 27 established and emerging painters, mixed and new-media artists, and sculptors to respond to an eclectic assortment of Grimm's stories and to redefine these folktales for a diverse, 21st century audience.

Our artists will create paintings, drawings, sculptures, and video works (viewable through the wonders of technology), which we will curate into a gorgeous, full-color book showcasing both the artworks and the Grimms' tales that inspired them. (The stories are a tweaked version of Margaret Hunt's translation by trilingual former Kassel-resident, German Literature Masters program graduate Yumiko Blackwell.)

Our inclusive funding model puts artists first. We're sharing our profits with every artist involved in the book, so the more money we raise the more money each artist receives.

The Kickstarter campaign is the only way to purchase the hand-numbered, first-edition of Mirror Mirrored.

Why This Project Matters

Before psychiatrist Carl Jung developed archetypes and Disney popularized Snow White and Cinderella, Jacob and Wilhem Grimm collected and published folktales.

Many of us were introduced to these stories as children, but the Grimm's tales were always meant for grownups too. They remain powerful and relevant today because they continue to speak to us across generations and cultures.

Much like the Biblical stories reimagined by artists like Giotto and Caravaggio, these fairy tales are perfect for reinterpretation.

Mirror Mirrored is Grimm for grownups. Aided by the works created by our 27 artists, this unique, interactive art book will allow you to revisit these fairy tales with new wonder and knowledge.

We are all on our own hero's journey, and the artworks created for this special volume will inspire you to see both fairy tales, as well as your own personal story, with new eyes.

As Booker-shortlisted author Karen Joy Fowler (who will be writing the introduction to this special collection) said, "Without our listening, all the stories are the same story."

Mirror Mirrored will be surprising, funny, harrowing, whimsical, and inspiring. But we need you to make it happen.

Our Amazing Artists...

...who are creating new work this this collection are: Amy Cutler, Angus McCullough, Anna Schuleit Haber, Anne Connell, Brittany DeNigris, Carrie Mae Weems, Debra Smith, DJ Spooky (aka Paul D. Miller), John Kelly, Joseph Keckler, Kiki Smith, Lothar Osterburg, Margaret Lanzetta, Plano Casual (aka Agustin Lucho Pozo), Rachel Perry Welty, Sarah Fagan, Siona Benjamin, Stephanie J. Williams, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Walter Martin & Paloma Muñoz, Will Rawls, and Corwin Levi. And several talented artists have works that pair perfectly with a Grimm's tale and will also be included: David Packer, Julia Jacquette, Simen Johan, Wangechi Mutu, and Yinka Shonibare MBE.

See more of their work on the Mirror Mirrored website.

How You Can Help

Please buy the book! Domestic shipping is included, and you will receive this unique hardbound edition after all the artworks are finished and the book is printed early next summer (a downloadable card in black and white or color detailing your purchase is available for this holiday season).

Also consider buying an original work of art, sponsoring an artist and a story with a special dedication on the tale's first page, or one of the other exciting rewards explained in more detail below.

Our Rewards

The following rewards are available for purchase in the column to the right.

$5 : Thank You Postcard

Receive a thank-you postcard from our assorted postcard collection with a handwritten thank you and doodle from Corwin and/or Michelle.

$10 : Mirror Mirrored, The eBook

Own the eBook Mirror Mirrored: A Contemporary Artists' Edition of 25 Grimm's Tales. This digital version will contain all of the content of the hardback book and access to multimedia elements, which can be read on a Kindle, iPad, computer, or tablet.

After our Kickstarter is funded, our artists will finish making their works by the end of this winter, we will design and print the book next spring, and plan to deliver the eBook version of Mirror Mirrored in June, 2015.

$25: A First Edition, Signed Copy of Gottfried the Dragon + Mirror Mirrored: The eBook.

Before Corwin Levi focused on his current artistic practice, he dipped his toes into illustration and storytelling. As a thank you for pledging $25, we will send you a signed, limited-edition copy of Corwin's children's book, Gottfried the Dragon. Gottfried is a classic fairy tale of a young dragon who sprays spit instead of breathing fire and is much put-upon by his ferocious family. Gottfried is 70 softbound pages with 24, full-page, mechanical pencil illustrations. (You can also get a copy of Gottfried along with the print version of Mirror Mirrored at the $70 reward level.)

$50 : Mirror Mirrored: The Book Mirror Mirrored: The eBook

This is the only place to purchase the hand-numbered, hardback book Mirror Mirrored: A Contemporary Artists' Edition of 25 Grimm's Tales. The collection will be printed on high-quality paper with a sewn binding and each of the 27 artists' pieces will be displayed in full-color. Most unique of all, any multimedia worksrepresented by an image in the bookcan be viewed in their entirety on your smartphone or tablet via QR codes.

After our Kickstarter is funded, our artists will finish making works by the end of this winter, we will design and print the book next spring, and plan to deliver your copy of Mirror Mirrored in June, 2015.

BUT if you would like to give the book as a present to someone this holiday, please do. You can download a printable card in black and white or color describing the book and informing the recipient that it will be arriving next summer.

In celebration of the holidays, we are offering TWO copies of Mirror Mirrored for only $90 to 50 lucky backers (see the $90 reward level). Also, if you would like more than two copies of the book, read our FAQs below for further instructions.

$100 : Personal Acknowledgment Mirror Mirrored: The Book + Mirror Mirrored: The eBook

For a donation of $100 or more, we will include a unique "thank you" in the book: your name (or the name of someone special to you) will be incorporated into a specially illustrated acknowledgement page created by Corwin and Michelle containing the names of everyone at this pledge amount and printed in every first-edition book.

$150 : Bears That Dance, an Archival Inkjet Print by David Packer + Personal Acknowledgment + Mirror Mirrored: The Book + Mirror Mirrored: The eBook

An image of David Packer's sculpture, Bears That Dance, will accompany the Grimm's tale "Snow White and Rose Red." This print of the sculpture is 16 x 24" and the ten copies from the limited-edition print run are available as rewards here.

Fulbright-fellow David Packer was born in the UK, is now based in Manhattan, and has had residencies and shows around the world. His work explores the relationship between man and nature, how one affects the other, and how they interact. You can learn more about David by visiting his website.

$150 : Sleep Matrix, an Archival Inkjet Print by Angus McCullough + Personal Acknowledgment + Mirror Mirrored: The Book + Mirror Mirrored: The eBook

Sleep Matrix outlines a range of possible spaces for narcolepsy, organized on two axis: from comfortable to uncomfortable and socially acceptable and unacceptable. Presented in the form of an architectural section drawing, the chart plays with the authority of graphic representation and the intersection between bodily needs/desires and the structures of social environments.

Angus McCullough is a multidisciplinary designer and maker. His work extends from a rich living experience and hyper-sensitivity, creating a hybrid practice of sculpture, video, drawing, photography, architecture, music/sound, performance, etc.

$250 : Artist & Story Sponsorship + Mirror Mirrored: The Book + Mirror Mirrored: The eBook

Sponsor one of the 27 Mirror Mirrored artists and their Grimms' story, and we will include a dedication of your choice at the beginning of the artist's fairy tale. Each artist can only be sponsored once, and after an artist and story combination is claimed we will remove it from this list (so if you purchase this reward, please send us a message through the "contact me" button on the upper right section of this page to claim your artist because these dedications are first-come, first serve).

Please note that if an artist is marked "story forthcoming" below, their Grimms' tale selection will not be determined until after the close of the Kickstarter campaign—though you may still sponsor that particular artist now. Dedications are subject to editorial approval and a 200-character limit. After the campaign is successfully funded, we will follow up with you as to what you would like to write for your sponsorship.

For the first time, he has offered to do this to a book of your choice for five backers. After the campaign is funded, we will ask you to either ship us a book for Corwin to alter or let him select one of his choosing. More information about Corwin's work is at his website.

Risks and challenges

Coordinating an ambitious project with 27 busy, professional artists is gratifying, but not without challenges. While all of our artists have committed to the project and our deadline, delays in submitting final artworks could complicate our production schedule and delay delivery of the final product. An artist's prior commitments might make it difficult to create a new artwork as originally planned or a complex performance piece could take longer to execute. Keeping 27 artists informed and on task is our greatest hurdle. But Michelle has worked closely with artists for almost 20 years and knows the ins and outs of creative project management. Even if, in a worst case scenario, one of our artists becomes unable to participate, we are confident we will find another talented creator to take the spot. And Corwin has experience designing books and catalogs, and regularly meets tight deadlines both as an artist and in his other career as an attorney. We have already dedicated 10 months of our time and energy to Mirror Mirrored, secured artist commitments, and have received a number of completed works—which proves we are tenacious individuals committed to making this project happen. We are confident we can overcome any reasonable challenges that might arise.
