Doubling the size of our current greenhouse will allow us to grow twice as much produce and continue to build an even bigger community around food.
By joining our campaign you will help to offset the cost of expanding our greenhouse, which includes doubling the growing space from 1,500 to over 3,000 square feet!
Ninety per cent of our fundraising goal will go towards the actual structure needed to double the size of the greenhouse. The remaining funds will go towards building a wood frame at the two ends of the hoop house. A sturdy, stable structure is needed to combat the unbelievably strong New Mexico winds.
Finally, if we exceed our fundraising goal that money will go towards other methods of season extension such as row covers and low tunnels and all the appropriate materials needed. We also need a germination chamber and new shelving for the propagation house. And that's just the beginning.
After three seasons we've hosted dozens of school groups, shared our farming knowledge with interns, volunteers and anyone who has visited us at the farm. We've literally grown tons and tons of food and are excited about the next phase of Sol Harvest. We've been growing and harvesting food since March 2012 and want to keep going - and that's where you come in!
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges we will face after our project is completed is crazy, 60 mph, unbelievably strong, what did I do to deserve this, New Mexico wind! We've already had the plastic blown off the greenhouse and this past spring part of the steel frame was temporarily damaged by the wind. That's why framing out walls at each end of the greenhouse is so important. They will help to reinforce the entire structure and prevent the wind from causing significant damage.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
