In the 1940s Emily Post, of Good Housekeeping, wrote "those who smoke outnumber those who do not by a hundred to one...so non-smokers must learn to adapt themselves to existing conditions...
and when they come into contact with smokers, it's scarecly fair the few should be allowed to prohibit the many from the pursuit of their comforts and their pleasures."
I'm Tom Love, a graphic designer based in London. I don't smoke anymore but I'm still fascinated by the glamorisation of smoking throughout the 20th century. There are many examples of how branding, advertising and packaging design, over the past 100 years, have seduced millions by permeateing society and culture to influence the relationship we have with smoking.
This project pays tribute to the designer and incredible contributor to American popular culture, Raymond Loewy. Loewy’s designs includes work such as the Coca Cola bottle, Greyhound buses and the Shell logo, as well as the Lucky Strike white packet.
In the case of Lucky Strike, it's obvious that the dramatic increase in sales over the years, despite the increasingly obvious health threats, is attributable to the striking branding and the aesthetic appeal of the packet's design.
My latest project aims to bring this design icon to life, as a limited edition screenprint.
For this project I intend to take an original 1942 Lucky Strike cigarette packet from my personal collection of vintage packaging and blow it up in size, creating a magnificent, limited edition, 7-colour (including a metallic gold), hand printed, Fine Art Screenprint.
The final prints come in 2 sizes - A2 420mm x 594mm / 16.5 x 23.4 and an exhibition size of 500 x 700mm / 19.6 x 27.5 inches.
Lucky Strike's global appeal and brand recognition is a testament to the simplicity and elegance of Loewy's original design. This is an iconic design that should be remembered and celebrated, and I think a magnificent, hand-printed poster is a great way to get it into many people's hands and homes.
I'm going to be using Liquitex acrylics...
Liquitex were the pioneers of acrylic paint in 1955, and were the paint of choice for artists Andy Warhol and David Hockney. Liquitex acrylics are the finest paints around, guaranteeing that these prints will be of the upmost quality.
Silver leaf foiling
As well as the 7 colour print, which includes gold ink, I'm also offering an exclusive edition of 50 prints, which will include a silver leaf foil detail! The silver leaf is made using real silver and is worked for ten hours, in five phases to transform them from their silver ingots forms to leaves.
I will use the silver leaf to depict the original foil wrapper of the cigarette packet, which was used to keep the cigarettes' tobacco fresh.
This stunning detail gives this print the extra wow factor, with each piece of silver leaf hand applied and lacquered to protect the print from the elements.
You have 2 options to choose from!
1 - The Lucky will be a 7 colour Fine Art Screenprint
2 - The Strike will be a 7 colour Fine Art Screenprint with silver leaf detail
Both will be Limited edition, both printed on the same high quality paper, and both hand signed and numbered.
As with all my prints, both 'The Lucky' and 'The Strike' are Limited Edition prints. There will strictly be just one print-run of these designs ever created, with each print personally printed, inspected, signed and numbered by the artist Tom Love. There will be no second editions, un-signed or un-numbered versions. You are backing a unique one-off art project.
To certify the above, each individual print will come with a beautifully designed certificate of authenticity, which will be signed and numbered, matching the print you receive.
As with all my projects I will hand-screen print, sign and number each print making them truly unique. The Limited Edition nature of the prints make them collectable, true pieces of art.
These Fine Art prints will be produced using Liquitex acrylics (including a metallic gold ink) and printed at Sonsoles Print Studio in London.
Each stage of the production will be documented and shared with you through photography and video so you can see your print being created from start to finish.
The Lucky Strike White packaging was originally designed by Raymond Loewy, who was challenged $50,000 by American Tobaccos President George Washington Hill to make the brand more appealing to women.
To promote Loewys new design, Lucky Strike used the on-going World War 2 as the cover story for chaging the packaging. Proudly announcing that Lucky Strike has gone to war and the new white packaging was it's 'new uniform'.
Lucky Strike claimed they were helping the war effort by scrapping the original green and gold pack as the original green and gold dyes used on the pre-war packaging were in demand to paint tanks, ships and the copper was also being used to coat bullets.
Since it's patriotic charged launch, the minimal white design packaging design has gone on to play an important role in Americana and U.S pop culture.
Recently Lucky Strike has been featured prominently in hit TV shows such as Mad Men and Broad Walk Empire, with characters such as Don Draper cementing Lucky Strike's iconic design in Americas rich history.
Thanks to Kickstarters around the world supporting and backing my projects, my series of 'Blown-up Vintage Art' already includes 13 previous prints which have been featured and sold in boutiques and galleries across Europe.

Risks and challenges
Since 2013 I have been designing and printing limited edition screenprints of my personal collection of 20th century branding and packaging design. Blowing them up in scale and producing exclusive editions which have been featured in various galleries across Europe.
This is my 5th project released on Kickstarter.
My previous kickstarter projects have all been successfully funded.
These are high quality art prints using only the best quality papers and inks.
I will keep all funders and supporters up-to-date with the production through regular updates - showing the complete printing process.
Posters will be mailed in sturdy Kraft Tubes and protective acid free tissue paper to protect the prints on their journey to you.
Each print will be certificated, hand signed and numbered.
This Kickstarter will be the ONLY edition of this design.
There are very few risks involved, but along the way plenty of challenges front themselves when producing something that is hand-made.
Each stage of design, colour matching and printing will go through initial testing and quality control at every stage, making sure the finished prints are worthy of your walls.
