About this project
"Advance Wars fans, pay attention." - Justin Davis, IGN
Our goal with Enhanced Wars is to build a fast, fun and accessible turn-based strategy game. A game that focuses on battle and tactics over troop build up and resource hoarding. A game that pays homage to the past while delivering a fresh, new experience.
Enhanced Wars is an asynchronous, turn-based strategy game for PC, Mac, Linux and web browser. Challenge your friends or make new ones in a tactical battle that unfolds at your pace. Created by a team of experienced professionals, Enhanced Wars delivers a familiar turn-based strategy game with fresh innovations to address some of the design foibles of the genre classics we are inspired by.
At a basic level, Enhanced Wars will be familiar to any fan of turn-based strategy games. On your turn you deploy troops, position your army, capture strategic locations and attack the enemy. Players trade turns until one is victorious.
Enhanced Wars introduces several features to address stalemating and long mop up phases that plague many strategy games.
The first feature is the action points system. On your turn, you get a set amount of AP to spend on completing actions. AP do not roll over from turn to turn, so you must balance your AP use between deploying new units, positioning your army and attacking the enemy.
The second feature is the win condition. By shifting the win condition from total annihilation to a point based system, we can avoid stalemate games where players quit from sheer boredom. You earn points for capturing drop zones, attacking the enemy and knocking out multiple units in a single turn.
The demo is a strong start, but there is so much more we want to add to Enhanced Wars to make it a complete strategy game. Some of the features on our project backlog include:
- More units - we have a long list of unique units we wish to add to the game.
- Unit special abilities - we want each unit to have a unique characteristic or ability that raises them above strategy game tropes.
- Objectives - a system to add variable objectives per map to focus the tension around strategic locations and/or set asymmetrical win conditions.
- Game events - a system that triggers a random effect that changes the course of battle when a player reaches a point threshold.
- Terrain effects - defense modifiers based on the type of tile your unit occupies.
- Challenge levels - single player scenarios that can teach the game or serve as interesting challenges for players
- Progression/Leveling - a persistent XP score for each player that levels him up and unlocks new units as he progresses through the ranks.
- Animations, visual effects, music and sound effects
Even more exciting will be the opportunity to learn from you as we enter the early access phase and make sure we are building the right features that will truly make Enhanced Wars special.
Quarter Spiral is an experienced team of professionals from the video game and web services industries. Between the 3 of us we have worked on over 35 shipped games for console, pc, web browser, social network and mobile at studios including BioWare San Francisco, Pandemic Studios, Weewar and InnoGames. We have worked on web services at companies including Engine Yard, Electronic Arts, Spreedly and Soda Creative. Games we have contributed include Dragon Age Legends, Weewar, Star Wars: Battlefront, and Crush the Castles Adventures.
Alex and Ethan spent years working side by side at BioWare San Francisco before founding Quarter Spiral. The team has been working together full time for a little over a year.
After over a year of self funding, Quarter Spiral does not have enough money to turn the Enhanced Wars demo into a finished product. This Kickstarter will help us raise the money necessary to put another 6 months into the game. We each live frugally, and are capable of surviving on a $2k a month stipend while we finish the game. In addition, we need $1k a month to cover server costs and at minimum $3k to cover some contracting needs for sound and music. If we are lucky enough to go over our project goal, we will be able to invest more time into adding features and polish to Enhanced Wars during the early access phase of development.

A digital Enhanced Wars wallpaper for your desktop
The name, twitter handle or short link of your choosing will appear in the game credits on all platforms
A special Backer badge will appear in the game next to your name. Non-backers will never be able to get a backer badge after the campaign has ended.
You will get access to the closed developer forums of the game ahead of its launch. On the forums we will share intimate details of the game's development directly with players and solicit their input on units, features, maps, changes to the game's balance and more.
Enhanced Wars + a gift copy for a friend
You will get a copy of Enhanced Wars on the platform of your choice as well as unlimited web-based access upon its Open Beta release. You will also get a gift copy to give to a friend. Every Enhanced Wars player needs a friend to play against!
True Believer badge
A special True Believer badge will show up in game next to your name. This badge will ONLY EVER be available to those Kickstarter backers who choose one of the limited, early bird discount tiers.
After the Kickstarter campaign is closed, the demo will be restricted to only those players who choose a reward tier with Alpha Access. Enhanced Wars will open back up to those backers with Beta Access a few months later when we have added new features and units.
The Enhanced Wars team will hold bi-weekly video calls with players with Dev Call access. We will solicit feedback directly on upcoming changes and do Q&A with our players.
The Dev team will make a movie-style poster to celebrate Enhanced Wars launch. Although signed, framed versions of this poster will only be given to members of the dev team, you will receive a high-res digital version of the poster.
Print & Play prototype
Enhanced Wars started its life as a pen & paper prototype made by Ethan & Alex while Thorben was off in the jungles of Jakarta. Get a print and play PDF that will allow you to try out the final iteration of the Enhanced Wars prototype for yourself.
Who doesn't love papercraft? Backers will receive a PDF to print out so they can decorate their desk with adorable Enhanced Wars papercraft.
Once the campaign is complete, the Enhanced Wars demo will be playable only for those players with Alpha Access. They will always be playing the latest version of Enhanced Wars and be able to give feedback directly to devs to help make Enhanced Wars the best game possible.
The Player Council
Become the voice of the community!
Enhanced Wars development will involve a lot of community participation. We want the community to make maps. We want the community to help us tune. We want the community to submit ideas for new units, features and game modes.
And we need the community help us decide what is ready for game time. User generated content will be available in a beta channel and the Player Council will vote on what maps are worthy of being folded into Enhanced Wars' map selection interface.
When the team has important issues, they will put them up to a player council vote. Player Council members will, for instance, help us choose which units or features to implement, or what issues with game balance are most in need of addressing.
Player Council members will be allowed to talk during developer calls. Player Council members will get a in game badge that will only be given to players on this prestigious council.
Player Council membership will only ever be "purchasable" as a reward for the Kickstarter. After the campaign is over, players must earn a seat on the Player Council by actively contributing to the community. Deserving Player Council members will be chosen by the dev team.
Council of 13 badge
Player Council membership is available at a discounted price to a limited number of true believers who are willing to join the Council of 13.
Council members will get a special in-game badge available only to these 13 players. They will also get some special perks to be determined by the dev team...
[also... Go Team Venture!]
Design Doc access
We will let you read our design documents for upcoming features and units and let us know what you think about them. All the perks of being part of the game team without having to do any work or having any responsibility!
Design a map
Design a map that will appear prominently in the game's release. Work with the dev team on your map and get feedback from us on how to improve it. You will be credited prominently in-game for your creation.
Design a mode
Work directly with the dev team to help design an objective/gameplay mode that will appear in the game's release. You will be credited prominently in-game for your creation.
Access to a exclusive and custom skinned faction in the game. This reward will only ever be available to Kickstarter backers who reward at this tier.

Risks and challenges
We built the multiplayer demo to help remove as much risk from the project as possible. But it is always possible that if fundraising is achieved, the game's development is more costly/time consuming than we planned for and the game is delayed. We may also find that hosting costs are higher than planned for, which can reduce the amount of time we can spend on the project before release. In one of these events we would do our best to secure additional funds. Potential funding sources include loans from family, allowing non-backers to buy into alpha access, or publishing deals.
If we are lucky enough to be funded and raise a significant amount of money above our goal, we will probably add more features to our development plans for Enhanced Wars. In this instance, the closed beta and open beta dates would move out depending upon the scale of improvements.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
