About

Everybody Dies at ScaryCon is the story of Ed Stryker, a horror director who made a huge splash in the independent film renaissance of the early 90's with his grungy, black and white, zero budget movie, Machete Betty.  Now, Ed is a shell of the man who dreamed of entertaining the world through his films.  The passion is gone and the flame's died down.  Even though the quality of his films deteriorate with each release, he still finds loyal fans eager to meet him at the annual horror convention, ScaryCon.  But this year will definitely be his last.

The poetry of Ed Stryker
The poetry of Ed Stryker

After a long night in the hotel bar, Ed discovers that the patrons sitting next to him are no longer the typical convention fanboys and cosplayers.  They're the blood-thirsty monsters from his movies.  They're alive.  They have their customary machetes and chainsaws.  And they're pissed.

Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival
Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival

So how did this short film come to be?  Well, it's kinda complicated. First, we had a script for a feature film called Everybody Dies at ScaryCon which was loosely based on our experiences from attending conventions to promote our first film, Stupid Teenagers Must Die! While we tried to raise money for the ScaryCon feature, we created a horror film festival that "lived in the same world" as our script and called it the "Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival." The festival's malicious mascot was a character straight from the ScaryCon script called Machete Betty. Three years later, we wrote a short film (the one we're making now) loosely based on our experiences from the film festival which was based on the feature script that inspired the festival.  The short is also called Everybody Dies at ScaryCon and, while it focuses on brand new characters, an old favorite named Machete Betty is in this story, too. Guess it's really not that complicated at all.  It makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

Bringing ScaryCon to Life!
Bringing ScaryCon to Life!

We have several rewards to thank you for helping us fund Everybody Dies at ScaryCon.  Of course, if you have all the T-shirts and posters and swag you need and would just like to give us money out of the goodness of your heart, we certainly won't argue with you!

Thank you!!!

 $200 USD

EVERYBODY DIES…INCLUDING YOU!

They say that "living well is the ultimate reward" or something like that. We couldn't disagree more. For your pledge of $200, you can be "KILLED" in "Everybody Dies at ScaryCon." It's up to you to get to the set on the day we schedule your "death", but when you get there, we'll give you a nice new wardrobe that will soon be covered in blood, guts and other sticky things. You'll, of course, be listed in the credits with a cool sounding "dead person" name and we'll take a picture with you in all of your grossness with as many of the cast and crew we can convince to stand near you. And just think: if you and a friend both choose this reward, you can even "die" together! Brothers, sisters, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, significant others…this is truly the reward for everybody!

This is the time in life where it will be FUN being a victim!

 $30 USD

The Preventative Casting Reward

Since Everybody Dies at ScaryCon takes place at a horror convention, we are reaching out to icons of the horror world to portray themselves in cameos. More than once, we've asked our genre fan friends who they'd like to see in ScaryCon. And because most of our friends are jackasses, they usually responded with "I'll tell you who should definitely NOT be in your movie...", followed by a list of actors and actresses who they, for one reason or another, just hate. This gave us the idea for our new Kickstarter Reward. For $30, you will have the honor of banning the actor, actress or public figure of your choice from appearing in Everybody Dies at ScaryCon! Not only will you have the personal satisfaction of guaranteeing one less movie credit for someone you despise, we'll also create a 30 second video and graphic featuring your name and your accomplishment of heroically saving the world from an awful performance you will never have to sit through.

Of course, you may be thinking "these guys are just making an indie short film. What are the chances they're going to get YOUR ACTOR OR ACTRESS in their movie even if I don't back their stupid little reward?" Our response: do you really want to take that chance? You don't know who we have access to. We may know a guy who knows a dude who's friends with their dog walker. Backing this reward is the only way to be 100% sure your talentless/overexposed/inexplicably successful creep of choice won't get this gig.

We do have one rule. Please don't pick a religious or political figure that will get you, us and/or our family members in trouble. Remember: this is all in good fun. We're not monsters. Or Fox News.

The movie takes place at a horror convention so we have A LOT of opportunities to visually promote your product in our "Dealer's Room" (where half of the film occurs.)  If you have a business, film, band, comic or pretty much anything you'd like to see displayed on screen with signs, banners or swag, please contact us directly for more information.

Jeff Smith
Writer/Director

As a young boy growing up in Fullerton, California, every weekend Jeff Smith's dad trekked to the local video store (Video Palace.   Rest in Peace) to pick up a new release.  Upon discovering the hot new movies were already checked out, Jeff's well-intentioned father would bring back a movie he thought the whole family would enjoy.  That movie was Wolfgang Petersen's 1984 crap fest, The Neverending Story.  Poor nine year old Jeff sat through that German import full of rock-biters, flying dogs, a drowning horse and Limhal's synthesized title song 127 times.  One would imagine that an act of such cruelty would turn poor Jeff away from movies forever.  But instead, it only encouraged him to walk to the video store himself to pick up the true classics of the era (Jaws, John Carpenter's The Thing, An American Werewolf in London, Ghostbusters, The Monster Squad, etc.)

After graduating from Chapman University's film school, Jeff split his time between filmmaking and his comedy music duo, Raymond and Scum, which has performed in numerous colleges, clubs and conventions around the world.  In 2006, Jeff, along with his producer partner Sara Parrell, made a zero-budget 80's horror movie send-up called Stupid Teenagers Must Die!, which received several film festival awards and was distributed worldwide through Vanguard Cinema.  In 2011, Jeff and Sara founded the Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival, Orange County, California's only scary movie fest, which was presented annually for three years.  In 2015, the festival took a break so the team could focus on making the short film, Everybody Dies at ScaryCon, a horror comedy about a passionless filmmaker who confronts his own monstrous creations at a horror convention.

Sara Parrell
Producer

Sara was born in Burbank, California, right across the street from the Disney Studios. Little did she know that she would later work for Disney in the entertainment departments in both Anaheim and Tokyo.  Sara spent seven years at Disney learning many aspects of entertainment including live entertainment, stage shows, and working with and managing performers.

It was there that she met writer/director, Jeff Smith, and together they would collaborate to make their first horror/comedy feature film, Stupid Teenagers Must Die! As the producer of STMD!, Sara secured domestic distribution and the film was released nationwide on-demand and home video in 2006. Along with producing, Sara was also the film’s Location and Casting Manager, Costume Designer, Script Supervisor, Publicist, Sales Agent, to name a few.

Sara has also spent 15 years in the event production industry.  She has worked at Fox Studios planning a multi-million dollar The Simpsons promotions campaign and event, planned various high end events around the world including large fiestas on the beaches of Mexico, gala events at wineries in Napa Valley, Cuban celebrations in Miami and movie screenings in Hollywood.  She has worked with budgets large and small to create successful and entertaining events that included large stage productions, exciting and unique entertainment, lavish décor and specially designed menus.

In 2006, Sara formed Off Set Pictures and together in partnership with Jeff Smith founded the Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival, Orange County, California's only scary movie fest.  Now in 2015, she is producing her third horror/comedy film titled Everybody Dies at ScaryCon.

Richard Trejo
Producer

It all started with The Crow.  The moment Richard saw the montage sequence of Eric Draven preparing his war paint for the task at hand, he realized he wanted everything to do with movies.  From the music to the cinematography he wanted to do it all.  At age 8, he started his creative journey by learning to play an Esteban type Spanish guitar and then moved onto various types of instruments including bass, drums, and keyboards.

In an attempt to tap into the movie business he started two podcasts in 2013: The Cinephile Network and Disturbing Talks - one for movies and the other for horror (respectively).  Established in 2013, Disturbing Talks, was created in conjunction with the website www.Trulydisturbing.com, where Richard began to write reviews, field reports, and produce/host the podcast.

In 2014 he finally had a chance to score his first short film, a psychological thriller The Night, directed by Dean Werner. His dream is to eventually write, direct, score, foley and sound mix his own films. From horror to drama, no cinematic stone shall be unturned.

Daniel Stonebraker

Costume Designer

For the better part of a decade, Daniel has been busy designing and developing costumes for stage, screen, and live events.  However, his interest started many yearsago as a young geek, sketching character designs for Dungeons and Dragons campaigns and plaguing his mom with ideas for his next Halloween costumes.  Ever the perfectionist, he finally realized he’d have to learn how to use a sewing machine if he wanted something to look just right.  Since then, Daniel has worked with clients from the Pacific Symphony to Creative Costuming at the Disneyland Resort, and most recently developing specialty costumes with the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. His work has received acclaim from the likes of Mona May (Enchanted, Clueless), Jennifer L. Bryan (The Vampire Diaries, Breaking Bad), and Christopher McColloch (The Venture Bros, The Tick).

Daniel Stonebraker's Original Costumes
Daniel Stonebraker's Original Costumes

We have years of experience making films and putting on festivals for VERY little money.  With your help, every dollar we receive will end up on the screen in Everybody Dies at ScaryCon.  Since most of this movie takes place at a horror convention, we really want to fill the ballroom with cameos from horror film stars.  The more money we get, the more cameos we can get!  Wouldn't it be awesome to see a room full of your favorite icons of horror hobnobbing like it's their own version of the Mos Eisley cantina?  And speaking of icons, Everybody Dies at ScaryCon will feature a cast of brand new monsters from director Ed Stryker's catalog of scary movies including the heavily scarred goliath of a man, Psycho Jim, to an evil "Chucky-like" plastic nativity baby Jesus puppet.  And, of course, there will be blood.  Lots and lots of blood.  And with all of the equipment, locations, costumes and post-production, you can see that the goal we've set is the bare minimum we'll need to get this done.  If we're lucky enough to get more funds than our original goal, don't worry.  The extra cash won't be going up our noses.  Extra money means more special effects, more of the aforementioned cameos, more of everything!

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at our campaign.  Making this movie would be a dream come true and we want to share it with as many friends (old and new) as possible.  To paraphrase filmmaker Uwe Boll, "Kickstarter is the best and I love everyone who helps others bring happiness to the world."  Actually, that may not be an accurate quote.  We'll have to search "Uwe Boll Kickstarter" on YouTube to see how off we were.

Risks and challenges

If you've followed the story of the creation of this short film, you know that the universe dealt us a nasty blow last year with a pretty terrifying health scare. It put the movie on hold and forced us to cancel the 2014 Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival. We are pleased to announce that not only are the filmmakers now in tip-top shape, they are actually invincible. They have super powers and can not be killed. But just in case a bold statement like that doesn't convince you, please know that completing this film has become more important to us than ever and we will do everything in our power to not only finish it in the timeline we've presented, but it will be something everyone involved will be proud of. We promise to keep an open and honest dialogue with all of our supporters so you know where we are in the process at all times. If something happens and we can't produce a reward, we will come up with something equal to or better than what you put your money down for. We're putting everything we've ever learned into this fun little movie. It'll be quite a ride and we'd love to have you join us!
