Well, we are moving somewhere Kickstarter can’t even find on the map.
Although Kickstarter says we’ll be in Cape Town, South Africa, we are actually going to St. Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean for a self-run, self-funded immersive journalism project January to July 2017.
Journalism is struggling to meet the demands of the digital age - this is visible in the lack of context in important stories, presenting only one or two sides of a complex issue, people being fed stories that already conform to their beliefs and the lack of transparency in how and why journalists do what they do.
We graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2016 with degrees in journalism, but didn’t want to become part of a type of journalism which people are fed up with and which doesn’t meet the demands of our society.
St. Helena is the most remote island in the world and is going through incredible societal and economic transitions. The world’s last working Royal Mail Ship, the RMS St. Helena, is in its last days. St. Helena coffee has become one of the world’s most expensive coffees. The St. Helena wirebird’s main habitat has been destroyed in the process of building an airport which may never open.
We will cover these issues, along with countless others, through every tool available. We will produce written stories, still photography and video episodes. We will be utilizing social media to bring the honesty and intrigue of our reporting to our global audience. We will produce a documentary, with the help of Emmy-winner Mike Boettcher, upon our return.
As this project is entirely our own, we need the funding to get us there! funding on Kickstarter is all or nothing, so help spread the word!

Risks and challenges
Funding is our biggest challenge for this project. Our travels to St. Helena are unique because it is difficult to get to and costs too much for news outlets to send reporters. Travel is what is going to take most of our budget, though we will need a few equipment items, as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
