HOPE & FEAR is unlike any documentary you've ever seen - providing a rare glimpse into the lives of four young liberal-minded Egyptians as they struggle to reshape their nation. Their story is one of aspiration and empowerment in the face of fear and chaos which dominates Egypt's ongoing revolution.
I'm Hosam Khedr, co-director and producer of HOPE & FEAR. Along with my partner Anjuli Bedi and our crazy dedicated team we set out on an audacious and dangerous quest to tell a more personal and timeless story.
HOPE & FEAR presents an insider's-perspective on the lives of four young Egyptian activists who are pushing for freedom of expression through their art and community activism. We follow Salman, Nada, Ammar, and Reham beyond the idealism, euphoria and revolution of Tahrir Square as they struggle to navigate the difficult terrain of an Egypt hindered by an oppressive security force, corruption, political and economic instability, and religious intolerance under the new Islamist government.
HOPE & FEAR's characters along with our special guest appearances, give a broader view of the challenges and implications of Egypt's revolution. Will the homeland of civilization maintain civility? Nothing less than the future of the region hangs in the balance. With the outcome of Egypt’s liberal youth movement, HOPE & FEAR’s intimate portrayal of its characters shows the common thread that unites all humanity: the human spirit’s refusal to capitulate to oppression despite the costs.
Dina Ibrahim and Director Hosam Khedr sat down with Egyptian satirist - Bassem Youssef at his home for a candid interview. Bassem was just honored in Time Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People. Here's a condensed clip from that interview to be featured in the upcoming film HOPE & FEAR:
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
This film was born out our desire to tell an important and meaningful story.
We've just wrapped up production and have returned home to San Francisco with over 170 hrs of footage. To cross the finish line we'll need your financial help to sponsor the post-production and marketing phase of this project.
Your generous financial support will help us finish the remaining elements of the film which includes editing, color grading, music scoring, and sound sweetening. Any extra funds will go towards marketing and outreach.
We have some rare rewards for all the supporters who can pledge $20 or more.
Graffiti artist Alaa Awad shared with us the wonderful and touching story behind his mural - The Funeral of The Martyr. If you can pledge $20 or more we'll share this story with you plus we'll send you a large screen saver of his mural which has now been, unfortunately, painted over.
Teaser of Alaa's story:
We loved Salman’s revolution poetry and rap so much that we booked a studio out for him to cut a full-length album. If you can pledge $50 or more we’ll send you the studio session in MP3 format along with behind the scene footage of Salman's studio session:
LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Help us tell this universal story of aspiration and empowerment.
The goals of the revolution are far from achieved. This is, in fact, the most crucial and fragile period for Egypt and its people.
Help us capture this important moment in time which could prove to be the most significant turning point in the history of the region and world at large.
Become an outreach partner and help us tell this story of personal empowerment.
We plan to use a multi-faceted outreach strategy to share our story while building an online activist community around our film’s major themes of youth empowerment through critical thinking and civic engagement following the example set by our four main activists: Salman, Nada, Ammar, and Reham.
We also hope this film bridges the divide that separates the Arab/Muslim worlds with the West, dispelling common misconceptions about Egyptian youth and the events in Cairo by partnering up with Arab, Muslim and multicultural organizations.
We would love to form a partnership between you and any organizations and communities that you're part of to help us spread the word!
Please jump on Facebook, Twitter, or your megaphone and help us to broadcast this message of empowerment and global unity.

CAN WE EXCEED OUR TARGET?
Yes! If we exceed our goal, it will allow us to make an even better film and to promote, market and distribute it more widely.
Exceeding our goal will greatly expand our access to different distribution platforms and help us to produce different versions in order to get the film seen in all of the different territories where it really needs to go!

Risks and challenges
Were there risks and challenges? Yes! There were many, but we overcame each one:
- We scored almost impossible-to-get governmental permission to shoot in rare & sensitive locations.
- We gained access to the homes and lives of both our characters and notable Egyptian personalities such as the most famous Egyptian television host and satirist Bassem Youssef (the Jon Stewart of Egypt).
- We risked our lives to capture Tahrir Sq. clashes: we've been beaten and tear-gassed, hospitalized and jailed twice during production.
- Production has been successfully wrapped.
Post-Production Completion Challenges:
You may be wondering what are the odds that we complete the picture? It is important to reaffirm that all the production work has been completed. Your generous support will be used to 'kickstart' our post-production and ensure HOPE & FEAR gets out to the widest possible audience. With our small guerrilla production team, the most significant potential challenge we face is not if this film will finish but when. The more support we garner on this Kickstarter campaign, the more we can spend on professional post-production services, and, most importantly, the more quickly we can get the film to you!
With funding in place, we expect to complete the project by August. So that our supporters are aware of our progress at every stage of the production, we will provide you with regular updates. These will include exclusive sneak peeks into HOPE & FEAR as well as a behind-the-scenes look at just what it takes to bring a revolution to the screen.
We've done all of the hard work! We've come so far! Now it's time to finish what we started.
It's time to cross the finish line: we need your help to hire a professional editor and to conduct a publicity campaign worthy of this timeless, transcendent story about such an epic period in the history of Egypt and its people.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
