About

The Deluxe Edo Jidai Board being unpackaged:

Learn more about Edo Jidai:

1. A word from the creator of Edo Jidai, a High School Math and Science teacher at Thames High School, New Zealand:

2. Check out the Edo Jidai game set-up and game play.  You will want to see how this one ends, as it was an epic match with amazing game history.  This game is for adults, we just happened to have a clever 6 year old that is a great opponent (with a bit of my help).  We thought this vid would also inspire people to game more with their kids!

Younger gamers would need a bit of help with rules.  You can see clearly that Kiiwa is a skilled and well seasoned Edo Jidai player and having a lot of fun.  So, gamers looking for a great game to play with their kids need look no further.

More game info at: www.the-edo-jidai-game.com

Edo Jidai is a little bit like Risk in the format of game play, but with many features added to make it a lot more fun, fast paced and exciting.  Since most people know how Risk is played, the following is a description of how Edo Jidai deviates from Risk to make a game that is less predictable, with far more variation in what actually happens.

1. Territory card cash-ins:

In Edo Jidai there are three types of territory cards that, like in Risk, can be cashed in for more armies during your turn.  However, these cards have duel purpose so that they can be used in game play as well.  This prevents players from hording territory cards (which makes Risk horribly repetitive).

Here are the three types of territory cards:

Dueling Samurai:  Can be used to raise peasants to samurai status (allowing a player to place samurai on the board at any time in the game).  The Dueling Samurai Card can also be used as an attack multiplier for Attack Cards.

Archers: Can be used to provide better odds on attack or on defense.

Horseback Samurai: Can be used to move samurai around the board, at anytime.

So, territory card cash-ins, which are a main strategic focus of Risk, is much more complex in Edo Jidai, strategically.  You may want to horde them but depending on what other players do it may be difficult or impossible.

2. Combat.  In Edo Jidai the attacker has a greater advantage in the game than in Risk, making games go faster and preventing the pacifist players from doing well.

3. Attack and Defense card pairings.  Edo Jidai has a whole deck of Attack Cards and a deck of Defense Cards.  Attack cards, such as Ronin can be used any time in the game (it doesn't have to be your turn).  This makes Edo Jidai much more engaging for people to play, since it doesn't necessarily have to be your turn to do something huge.

Attack Cards can be defended against, where the defense can be much more devastating than the attack.  Players make their strategy based on cards held, but it doesn't always work out - making the game very unpredictable.

Here are some Attack - Defense pairings:

There are more pairings in the Game that make the game history very interesting and always unique, but we don't wan't to spoil the fun.

4. God Cards.  A very popular aspect of the game are the natural disasters that occur when triple sixes are rolled during combat. These events are randomized and play a massive part in who will win a game.  With up to 8 dice being rolled at once for combat, three 6's comes up often and its a lot of fun.

Here are some God Cards:

5. Time Limit Rules.  Unlike Risk, which can take hours to play, Edo Jidai has time limit rules that players can use to have a good round in a reasonable amount of time.

Also, once player's get the hang of game ending moves, games get faster.  Edo Jidai is a lot like chess, in that player's with finesse can end games quickly and dramatically making Edo Jidai awesome!

6. A wide range of playing cards.  Edo Jidai's card play make the game unforgettable.  Each game played is different and the use or misuse of cards usually determines the winner (along with luck on dice).

7. Navy can be employed for sneak attacks.  Use of the seas around Japan is a very strong play in the game, but associated with very high risk.

Navy is by far the strongest card in the game, but Typhoon, Tsunami and Demons sink ships.  We have seen grown men cry at sunken ships in this game during Beta Testing! (no joke).

8. Turn based, but not.  Although Edo Jidai is turn based, there is a lot a player can do out of their turn that really makes a huge difference in the enjoyability of the game and the outcome.

"Just played my first game of Edo Jidai. It was epic. Unlike similar games I have played Edo Jidai has so much depth such as the God Cards, 2 prong attacks, peace mode and Naval battles. An added bonus is that it is historically accurate and I got a sense of what it was like to live and fight during the time of the Samurai. There is plenty in Edo Jidai to keep each game feeling fresh. Each time I set up the board it is like starting a mystery novel with many unexpected twists and turns." - Triff

Funding Goals and Objectives:

We did things backwards this time due to very high demand from locals to get this game up and running.  The priority for funding of Edo Jidai at this point is to get the BigForest Creativity Lab out of debt and pay for the R&D costs of Edo Jidai.  Once we are on solid feet financially, BigForest Creativity Lab can move forward with our fresh gaming concepts.

Main Objectives:

Pay off up to $2000 in R&D debt

Send review copies to board gaming clubs and reviewers for promotion.

Lowering the cost for producing the hand-crafted armies.  This aspect of Edo Jidai has gamers very excited:

The game pieces are made of clay, and not plastic.  We want to keep this very popular aspect of the game going.  The game developer currently hand-crafts each army, which is too time consuming and not viable in the long-term.  BigForest Creativity lab wants to fair trade the hand-crafted armies with more cost effective solutions in Asia.

 Stretch goals:

If this contribution level is breached, 30 more game cards will be added to the Edo Jidai game that will leave gamers stunned at their amazing impact on an already incredible game. These game cards are a Ninja launch, ultra secret aspect of the Edo Jidai game and details will not be revealed until this contribution level is attained.

Spies reveal:

These 30 new game cards will serve as a bridge towards our the Omega 2.0 Edo Jidai game concept.  The yet to be released Omega 2.0 Edo Jidai game will come with a completely new gaming entity that will become part of the Edo Jidai experience, yet to be revealed.

Funds will be used to pay for mass production of game cards, game board and packaging, including game card boxes.  Development of the infrastructure for mass production will continue to be organised.

The goals of mass production are as stated:

-Broaden the scope of individuals economically benefiting from the production of the Edo Jidai game.

-reduce prices of Edo Jidai gaming materials including boards, cards, dice armies and castles.

-increase the quality of the packaging for this soon to be legendary game.

Spies reveal:

If the $100,000 contribution level is breached, the entire Omega 2.0 Edo Jidai game plan will be revealed.

Funds will be used to complete the infrastructure required for the mass production of the Edo Jidai Board Game.

The Edo Jidai team will use any funds above the $100,000 contribution level, for the development of Omega 2.0 game additions will commence with a KickStarter date of approximately September 2015 for the Omega 2.0 Edo Jidai KickStarter (September 2015).

All Artwork is original or free to use art from the Edo Jidai era of Japanese history and earlier.

Risks and challenges

Edo Jidai is a very simple game to produce. We have everything set in place to follow through with our promised intentions with this project. I am on holidays for a month to work on completing orders in a timely manner right after the funding period is over. So, the timing for a successful campaign couldn't be better.
