Twelve Elements of War is a collaborative effort
between Sword & Board Games and Alessio Cavatore’s River Horse.
The team at River Horse working on this project
under the supervision of Alessio Cavatore are Anthony Reynolds, rules developer/editor and lead writer, developing the rich background already created by the Sword
& Board Games team. He is assisted by Dylan Owen, who is also in charge of
product design and is assisting with creative writing. Anthony Greentree will
provide the art and graphics, bringing the continent of Dothmora and the world
of Lumria to life with his artistic talents.
Our main goal for this campaign is AUD$10,000. This will allow us to print the master miniatures for Shadow Hold and The Mining Guild, create the moulds and put into production the Shadow Hold (7 miniatures) and Mining Guild (7 miniatures) factions. As well as print the rulebook.
Welcome to the
Eastlands of Dothmora, a realm riven by intrigue, feuding lords and warbands
fighting in the secretive Shadow War. It is a land steeped in rune magic and
blood, yet one where the various races – humans, elves, dwarfs, fauns, trolls,
ogres, orcs, goblins and halflings – live in harmony, owing allegiance not to
race but to one of the mighty factions that make up this war-torn kingdom.
Twelve Elements of War is a
28mm Tabletop skirmish wargame. A typical warband will include between 7 - 12 models (depending on your
faction and style of play), activating one model at a time. Players alternate
turns activating models, keeping both players engaged and thinking. Despite only
activating one model at a time, it successfully simulates combined attacks with
multiple models; the first attacks in a round weaken and lock-down a model,
making it easier to finish off by attackers later in a round.
It uses a multiple D6 dice,
one-roll system for all rolls during a battle. Roll a number of dice equal to
the Model Statistic that you are using to attack/defend/employ, add bonus dice
if you have an advantage of some type, like charging. Compare the result of
this roll to the enemy model's statistic or enemy model's roll to see if you
succeed. The dice system does not use charts or tables & is used for all
rolls, making the game extremely easy to learn.
The broad range of Faction
Lists each bring something special to the battlefield, and each faction choose
from the 9 fantasy races. Each Faction is balanced to each other, despite
having multiple fantasy races and at least 6 roles per Faction to choose from.
Successfully employing a variety of different races performing melee, shooting
or magic roles on the battlefield is the key to winning.
Over 20 different mission
combinations ensures that each game of Twelve Elements of War will different from the next.
Creating a balanced warband is only the start; quick thinking, using the right
model at the right time & an assertive battleplan is the key to completing
your objectives while denying your opponent theirs.
The fun with Twelve Elements of
War doesn't finish after one game. Twelve Elements of War has a complete
Campaign system that sees your models gain experience, better abilities, new
skills, money and magical runic items as they play battles and also explore the
world of Lumria acquiring strange and unique items. You will also have the option to visit a town after each game. In town you can choose to go to the Tavern to recruit new members and heroes, The Market to purchase new items and equipment, the Arena to watch pit fighting and maybe pick up a few pointers. Lastly the Temple, where you can prey to the gods to heal your wounds or ask for their blessing in future battles. In addition to visiting these places, you roll on one of four unique “random encounter charts”.
Games can be played on a vast
variety of battlefield types, from cautious tactical advances in the snow
covered Forest of Sighs, to fast paced skirmishes leaping from building top to
building top in the sprawling Port City of Arcadia.
Lastly, with 100's of magical item combinations to try out and over 36 unique runic spells to
cast with your magic users, this game has a large amount of re-playability.

Noble and proud, its soldiers armoured in the finest
steel plate, Highguard once ruled all of the Eastlands… but that day is now
Ruling an ever-expanding subterranean realm, the
Mining Guild is a faction renowned for the toughness and tenacity of its
warriors and citizens.
Geniocracy of Toth
Masters of invention and technology, the Geniocracy
makes extensive use of clockwork constructs, aiding its citizens in menial
tasks and marching alongside its armies when it goes to war.
Shrouded in darkness, the acolytes of the Shadow
Hold are Runecasters who wield powers beyond comprehension and are feared
across all of the Eastlands.
Religious fanatics who believe they alone can save
Dothmora, the Keepers are a fervent order who see it as their divine duty to
rid the Eastlands of dangerous Runecasters.
Heroes for Hire
Warbands can be supported by a
number of unique “Heroes for Hire” lending their services to your noble cause
(for the right amount of sovereigns of course)

As you can see from the pictures above, we are more than capable of delivering from concept art to finished miniature.
We have moved away from the “sterile” style of what you would expect to find in game books these days. We are trying to show a “rough” and “hand drawn” style of art as you would have found in the old rule books from the late 70's and 80's when tabletop gaming was in its infancy.
As we have indicated many times before, we feel that many of today’s tabletop gaming books have lost the “warmth and feeling” that they once possessed. Having said that, we must stress that the team at Sword & Board Games do play numerous other games and we have great respect for other companies achievements and products. Their huge success is a testament to their awesomeness).
We understand that the style may not be to everyone’s taste however it complements the gaming world that we have created extremely well. The book is being styled as a traveller’s tome/journal, so again the “rough” style fits nicely. All the rules and lore will be set out in a format that you would expect from a typical rule book.
The rulebook will be 160 pages long and will include 42,000+ words of lore and background, rules, faction character lists, warband rosters, quick check guide, campaign rules and much more.

Risks and challenges
This is a massive project, however we are more than capable of seeing it through to completion. We have a great team working on this project who are ready to deliver on all goals set and reached.
However, as we are relying on external parties for 3D printing, molding and production there may be delays. This is why we have planned for and have allowed a reasonable amount of time for each phase so as to deliver pledges on or as close to the times promised.
We have partnered with Maxmini, an already established industry name with a wealth of experience and knowledge in quality 3D printing and casting. They will be handling the production of miniatures. We have had six months to iron out any issues in the 3D printing and molding process. We believe that this will decrees the chances of design issues and casting problems.
We also have additional concept artists and 3D sculptors on standby in case we exceed all initial goals.
The Rulebook has already been completed and is ready to go to print so there should not be any delay.
