About

Meet Santa, Banta, Naughty, and Nice; four awesome characters in a silly roleplay situation.

“Santa Banta Naughty Nice” is a Christmassy card game, designed to play throughout the holiday season. This is the first ever game to hang out with Santa Clause. It’s easy to learn, fun to play, and a great way to bring the family together for something fun and unique.

Santa needs your help to spread his Christmas cheer!

You can do that by trying to match identical characters in pairs and collect best points in every deal. The points are mostly determined by Banta's performance.

The object of the game is to be the first player to match pairs for all 4 character cards, then lead the game and assign an elf to find the naughty one. Having quick eyes and a memory of cards you have passed - is your key to success.

To win the game, all you need to do is - bring your inner elf out!

This is a simple, fun, and addictive game for all ages! Anyone over the age of seven will absolutely love playing - it’s a real no-brainer game that you’ll enjoy for hours.

At the holidays or anytime, the most important thing we can do is spend time with the ones we love. That’s the main purpose of this game - to truly connect with the people around you, and laugh, have fun and enjoy each other’s company. We can get disconnected far too easily in today’s technological world, and this game changes that.

This game helps your kids by building teamwork capability, and skills in patience, sharing things and making quick decisions. It refines mental skills like logic, observation, and memory.

But, what you’ll love most is spending time with people you care about.

A beautifully designed deck of 33 cards for four individual characters - Santa, Banta, Naughty, and Nice; plus 2 extra cards for Joker.

A specially crafted set of Sleigh Bells for Santa to take control of the game with it.

150 copies of scorecards to keep track of your scores. You can make copies or use white sheets, once you get addicted to this game.

2 premium quality pencils to keep track of your scores while you are playing.

A step by step illustrated guide to how to play this game.

This foam insert will be added to the box if we successfully reach our “stage – 4” stretch goal.
This foam insert will be added to the box if we successfully reach our “stage – 4” stretch goal.

If we successfully reach our Stage-5 funding goal, a special Kickstarter pack of “all season version” will be added in the box- for free.

If we successfully reach our "Like us on Facebook" goal, a coloring book named "Inner Elf Out" will be added only for Kickstarter backers, free.

MEASUREMENTS AND DIMENSIONS:
The Box: Height 7.5 inch X Width 10.75 inch X Spine 2.00 inch; Foam Insert: Height 1.85 inch; Deck of Card (tuck box): Height 3.5 inch X Width 10.75 inch X Spine 0.75 inch; Pencils: Each 2.5 inches long; Scorecard: Height 7.00 inch X Width 3.00 inch (Deck is 1.50 inches thick); Sleigh Bell: 5.85 inches tall; Instruction Booklet: Height 2.50 inch X Width 2.75 inch, 24 pages.

Yes, we call it a "Winter Deck," because you can play these cards only in winter, especially when Santa Clause is coming through…

The playing cards and the tuckbox for this game are designed by two creative artists, selected from an online contest. More than 10 designers from around the world participated for this, and finally, we got this beautiful designs as the winner.

Inside the tuckbox we have total 35 cards including 2 Joker cards.

Why there are 9 cards for Naughty, while other characters have 8 cards each? To understand this batter, you need to read our “how to play” instruction.

All cards are standard 'bridge' size, 2.25 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall.

While designing these cards, we were aware that "gender" could be an issue at home. Therefore, we designed both Naughty and Nice in male and female (girl and boy) cards in such a way that both boys and girls can feel ownership while they play. If a card is female from upside, turn it up-side-down, you will see a male character.

Cards are printed on finest available stock paper (see stretch goals)

Reaching our primary Kickstarter funding goal will ensure the production of the core game - and it’ll be great! However, getting ‘extra fuel’ will mean extra mileage for our journey. Achieving further funding goals would help us to make this game even better - we’re even planning to release a special version of the game if we continue to get your support until we reach our Stage-5 goal.

So, how will your increased support help us grow? Let’s take a closer look:

This game can be played by both 3 or 4 players; in this campaign, we are showing standard 4 players setup to avoid any confusion. To know more about how 3 players can play this game, please scroll bellow to check “how to play - step by step” instruction section.

OBJECT OF THE GAME

The object of the game is to be the first player to match pairs for all 4 character cards, then become Santa Clause to lead the game and assign an elf to find the naughty one. Having quick eyes and a memory of cards you have passed is your key to success.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED?
• A standard deck of 33 cards, you don’t need a joker to play. Joker card is provided to replace any lost or damaged card (included)
• Pencil and the score tracking sheet (included)
• The Sleighbell (included)
• A table or other flat surface with enough room for all players to sit facing each other in a circle.
• 4 players of age 7+.

SETTING UP THE GAME

• 4 players sit in a circle facing each other.
• Dealer for the first round is chosen randomly. Subsequently, the next dealer is the “Santa” of the previous round.
• Bring the “Sleigh Bell” out the box and place it at the center of playing area.
• One player should be assigned to record the scores after each round and totaling up them at the end of the game.
• The dealer shuffles the cards and deals them out one at a time face down to his right.
• As there are 33 cards, the person who gets the first card – will get the last card too, meaning one card extra.
• Set a target of how many rounds you are going to play. We suggest 15 rounds for a standard fun play. However, you are open to decide depending on your mood – e.g. 5 or 25 rounds, or by time- 30 minutes of play, or score 50 to reach first, etc.

PLAYING THE GAME
Every round of play has two parts

Part 1: Match pairs of all characters
• Players each look at their cards and arrange them, so the same cards are next to the each other in their hand. The target is to make one pair for each character card, 2 cards for Santa, 2 for Banta, 2 for naughty, 2 for nice.
• The player who gets the last card (directly to the dealers right) will play first (first player). She/he will place an unwanted card on playing surface, cards face down. The player can also directly pass it to the next (right side/second) player. No other players will see what card they pass to the next hand.
• Then the second player will do same, pass a card to the next right player.
• Do not try to match more than one pair for the same character.
• A Player cannot pass the same character card more than twice in a row to his next hand
• The first player/hand to match pairs for all 4 character cards becomes “Santa Clause.” Now Santa Clause Will pick up the Sleighbell and jingle it to take control and lead the game.
• Other 3 players will continue playing until a next player matches 4 pairs for all 4 character cards. Santa Clause will just watch.
• Next player/hand to match all 4 character cards becomes “Banta - the Elf,” who works and play for Santa Clause, as we all know. He will now show his card.
• Other 2 players will not show their card. One of them now have 9 cards and another one have 8.

Part 2: Find the Naughty one
• Now “Santa Clause” (the first player who match pairs) will ask “Banta the Elf” ( a second player who match pairs) to find the Naughty one. Alternatively, Santa can point his finger to a player or spell a name to ask Banta: Naughty or Nice?
• Of the remaining two players, one is “Naughty,” because she/he is holding more naughty cards then the other one (not necessarily the 9 card holder).
• “Banta the Elf” will now give an answer to Santa Clause by using his “guessing power” or “intuition,” as he is supposed to be a good assistant to “Santa Clause.”
• Now the two last players will show their card.
Make sure not to let “Banta the Elf” see your card before he gives an answer. You can also create a fake expression fool him.

SCORING THE GAME
• “Santa Clause” gets 5 points for that round;
• “Banta the elf” gets 4 points if he gives the right answer, 0 points if he is wrong.
• “Nice” gets 3 and “Naughty” gets 2 if “Banta the Elf” gives a wrong answer. If “Banta the Elf” gives a right answer both of them gets 0 points. • Put an X mark beside Nice’s score for every deal. The Player who was Nice for a maximum number of times - gets an extra 5 point (for being so Nice throughout the game).

WINNING THE GAME

• Write down your score on provided scorecard after each play. Put a tick mark on the side of Nice’s score. Sum it up after 15 plays (or your targeted number of play, time of play or targeted closing score).
• The Player who was Nice for a maximum number of times - gets an extra 5 point (for being so Nice throughout the game).
• The player with the highest score is the winner of the game. (And he gets the best Christmas gift this year!)

PLAY WITH 3 PLAYERS
• If you are running short of one player, just keep all “Banta” cards out of the play, meaning there will be total 25 cards to play.
• Instead of “Banta the Elf,” “Santa Clause” himself now have to find out who is the “Naughty” one. If he gets it wrong, he gets 0 points. If He is right, Naughty and Nice Both gets 0 points.

An "open wiki" for a card game! Yes, you heard it right.

We hope to develop a “how we play” open wiki website for this game if we are able to successfully achieve our stretch goal of $600,000 Canadian dollars (which is around 446,000 US dollars). At this open wiki, your discoveries can be collected and edited by you and others as well. You can propose, and write copy for play variations, edit others proposal, and can share your gaming experience on that proposed website.

During the developing and testing process of this game, we came across many variations of this game which could be played with the same cards as well as numerous ways to design it. We did try a few of them while the game testing was going on, and tell you what? They were quite enjoyable.

In this campaign, what we are offering are the best and simplest t “how to play” instructions which we can discover on our own. But what we really want is to hear it from you. Yes, we believe in your ideas and creativity.

Although this game can be played by our provided rules for unlimited time to have unlimited fun. But, to make this game a truly timeless piece, please support this “wiki” idea so that users can set, suggest and edit both rules and versions of this game! How interesting thing that would be!

SHIPPING COSTS:
Regardless of location, every backer is very important to us. Though shipping is very expensive and a cost we all need to share, we have tried our best to keep it as low as possible.

We are also providing free shipping to the backers who back us for $ 88 CAD or more.

To keep the procedure simpler for our backers, we will be handling any customs or other import procedures and will be paying those customs fees from our own pocket. You don’t need to worry about these things at all.

So, pledge with confidence!

In case you order in bulk quantitates, and get hit with customs, we'll reimburse you!

DELIVERY DATE:
Don’t get us wrong. We are not delivering this game this year on Christmas. You will be getting delivery of this unique game pack by the August of 2017.

Why not delivering in this Christmas if it is ready?
A good question. The reason for not doing so is that we want to deliver a professionally produced high-end finished product to you. We are running our Kickstarter campaign this Christmas.

Once this campaign ends, we will be sending details to the North Pole. Why? For Santa Clause’s approval, of course! After that, the production process shall take place in China.

Once you have gotten hands on your copy in August 2017, you will have sufficient time to try it out before that big Christmas party of yours. Moreover, you will have time to decide if you want more copies of the game so that your friends and loved ones can have it too!

TERMS & CONDITIONS:
1. By pledging to this project, you acknowledge that the final look, materials, and the design of the content are subject to change and may differ substantially from what you can see in this presentation.
2. By pledging to this project, you agree that our responsibility to you is to ship your order to an address provided by you. Providing correct address information and ensuring this address is deliverable by normal methods is your responsibility. We regret that we are unable to ship to PO Boxes.

Play this audio to listen to our story behind this game

It was about three years ago when I went to visit a friend for the Christmas holiday and was surprised to notice something.

While the joy of the holiday was definitely there, something really stood out to me that was disheartening: I saw kids and adults, all enjoying their time in their own separate way. Some were on their phones or tablets, some were playing video games, watching TV, etc.

Everyone was technically ‘together,’ but they certainly weren’t interacting with each other. Trust me, I understand the benefits of technology, but when it disconnects us, no one is benefitting - especially our kids.

I’ve always felt the holiday season is supposed to be able togetherness, and doing things as a group. While these people may have been in the same house, they were all ‘on their own.’ I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing, and wished there could be something to fill that void, and bring them together.

That’s when the idea of ‘Santa Banta Naughty Nice’ came to my mind, and after discussing it with loved ones, I knew I had to turn it into a reality.

The game was first put to the test the following year, in the winter of 2015. The prototype was very basic; drawings of characters and a score card, but we got incredible feedback from family and friends - both kids, and adults! Since then, we’ve tested the game out with 14 different groups of all ages, and that positive feedback has only continued. It was so encouraging to see adults and kids playing together, and spending quality time.

Then I decided to take it to the next level by making it available to everyone. I have founded a new company named “Ogopogo” to produce this game for the mass market and started contacting people in the various field to get professional teamwork.

This way “I” became “we."

Now, it’s time to really bring this game to life and share it with everyone, and we need your help to do so.

Simply, we need your help to take this game to the next level.

With this Kickstarter campaign, we hope to accomplish two things:

First, we’re here to gauge interest. Our family and friends loved playing this game, now we want to see just how far that love can spread. We think it’s pretty great, but we want you to know it’s great, too!

Second, we want to make the best possible Christmas game on the market for our backers, and everyone else. With your support, we’ll be able to go to a real, high-end production and distribution process.

By backing our project, you’re not only helping us out, but you’re getting this great product months ahead of everyone else with a very special Kickstarter price.

It’s time to take back the holidays. If you’re ready to put down your phone for a bit and indulge in some old-fashioned fun with family, we hope you’ll consider backing our project.

We can’t wait to share this with you, and can’t thank you enough for your support!

You may already have noticed the Ogopogo logo in this campaign and wondering what is that for. Well, we founded this company to produce this game for the mass market but Ogopogo does not plan to limit itself to publishing games only, we plan to do other kids stuff too.

We are based in Toronto.  Please feel free to reach us by emailing at mail@santabantanaughtynice.com or by sending us a message through Kickstarter directly.

Risks and challenges

(Planning and Designing)

It may sound easier to create a card game compared to a video game. But nothing is ever as easy as we might wish. With this game, in particular, there were a few challenges, (Like naming the characters, setting up the game play rules and scoring systems, etc.) that were overcome by creating various prototypes, and playing them in different situations. By doing that, we finally could decide on the best options, before launching this campaign.

Though we are done with all of the designing tasks, more will come up if we hit our further stretch goals. This will be another challenge, but we already have mastered our skills to source from the best designers.

(Manufacturing)

As we are a Toronto based start-up, printing and producing in Toronto is simply not cost effective for such a low priced product. While planning to do it in China, we already are communicating with Chinese printers and packagers to get the job done well, but inexpensively.

If we end up with less support from the Kickstarter community, meaning reaching only our basic target of fundraising goal, that will push us to produce only a small quantity of product, which means keeping the cost for each copy down will be really challenging. But, as we grow with our community support, meaning more pre-orders, keeping cost down will be simpler. This is, of course, what we want most of all. We'd love to make this game affordable for everyone!

(Sales and distribution)
Before we start our campaign, we thoroughly researched our market and discovered there is quite a bit of potential for a game like this. We have a clear understanding of the importance of placing our product into a proper distribution channel before Christmas season, and this is a very important key for this product. This is the reason we set to launch our game by next Christmas, not this year.

Our sales campaign will include social media presence, direct approach to retailers & game stores and utilizing big online retailers.

We are planning to distribute our Kickstarter backers copy long before we hit the mass market shelves. This will allow us to be able to provide a very smooth customer service for our Kickstarter backers.
